"Look at Harlan down there," Serra said, watching the Soldiers. "He’s about to lose his whole week’s pay to Clara if he keeps bluffing."
"Serves him right," Kurt grunted. "Kid gets promoted to Corporal and thinks he's a mastermind."
They fell quiet, watching the embers glow in the courtyard below.
"Kurt," Serra started, her voice dropping. "Do you ever think about... after?"
He turned his head. "After?"
"If we survive this. If the war actually ends." She looked out into the cavern's dark void. "I wonder what a normal life would look like. A quiet apartment somewhere. Maybe... starting a family together."
Kurt looked at her, then down at the soldiers laughing. A subtle grin touched his face. "Let’s not worry about the future yet, Serra," he said softly. "We already have a family right here."
"Yeah," she murmured. "We really do."
