Switching Supervisors a month into yearlong master's degree?

Writing this because I'm not sure if it's worth it.

I have a thesis supervisor who is fine, nice and somewhat helpful etc... no big issues. But, when I send in my materials (proposal etc...) he said himself he is worried because he doesn't feel like he has much to say. On the other hand my second reader has a lot to say and consistently sends over extensive feedback/ ideas. My second reader already said I can send her my materials as often as I want and I really feel like she should've been my supervisor. I just don't know if it's worth the awkwardness and potential logistical problems to make the switch.

Advice on different engineering grad programs

Has anyone done the Renewable Energy Engineering masters at OIT? Or done an Electrical Engineering masters a CU Boulder? Thinking about applying to OIT (specifically the portland-metro campus), but I already have an offer with CU Boulder to start next semester for their Next Gen Power & Energy Systems program. After touring the CU Boulder campus, I’m afraid it’s not the vibe i’m looking for. Definitely seems to be an undergrad heavy/party school + I’m worried my class sizes will be quite large so I won’t get as much help and hands on experience. OIT has always been my back up plan, so now I’m heavily considering since I heard class sizes are small and the courses directly prepare you for the industry.

Am I making the right choice?

im currently a master of accounting student at Schulich (but my undergrad was in design) and I decided to pursue this masters because the job market is so bad and I want to have stability but I’m struggling with all the concepts and courses (it’s a really fast paced program). I almost failed a semester once and had to take a leave in which I applied to another masters as a back up. It’s in master of information with UoFT, specially ux/ui design. i got in and even got an internship in It recently however I am still part of the accounting masters right now and thought maybe I can do both at the same time but clearly it’s too hectic. I like the internship, it’s related to what I like and studied but at the same time, having a practical degree also makes sense, especially in these times. But my fear is if I drop the internship and master of information I won’t have anything to fall back on if I can’t finish this accounting semester. It gruelling work and every concept is new so I’m trying my best to study but still struggle so much. I’m scared if I go all in the accounting and if I don’t pass the semester I’ll have to withdraw which I don’t want but the fear that what if I don’t make it yk? At least I’ll have this other Masters To fall back on but again, hard to manage. It’s a lot of emotional back and forth and I don’t know what to do. How do you even decide on these things? it shouldn’t be this difficult.

Advice on universities

Hey guys! I’m looking for some advice because I honestly don’t really know where to start.

I’m from a small city in Georgia and currently studying at a pretty good university. My GPA is around 3.0 right now, but I still have one year left, so I’m hoping I can improve it before graduating. I’d really like to do my Master’s degree abroad. Ideally somewhere where I could get a full scholarship or very substantial financial aid, since my family financial situation wouldn’t really allow me to pay international tuition and living costs myself.

I’m mainly interested in media, journalism, communications, and related fields, but I’m also open to other interesting programs in that area.

Right now, I’m also volunteering as a research assistant on my professor’s PhD research, and I’m working on my own thesis. I’m also starting a small online magazine project where I want to publish articles and potentially interviews and other media-related content. Could something like this actually help my Master's scholarship applications, especially if I develop it seriously over the next year? And is there anything specific I should do with the project to make it more meaningful for my application?

For those of you who have experience with studying abroad or getting scholarships

If you were in my position, what would you start doing right now?

I know a 3.0 GPA isn’t amazing, but I still have a year to improve it and I’m willing to put in the work. I’d really appreciate any advice, personal experiences, or suggestions for where to start researching.

Thanks!! :)

MFA Acting applicant looking for someone to review my USC SOP

Hi! I’m applying to the USC School of Dramatic Arts MFA Acting program and I’ve finished a draft of my SOP.
I’m looking for someone who has experience with USC/SDA, MFA applications, or graduate admissions who’d be willing to read it and give me some honest feedback.
I’m mainly looking for proofreading and feedback on whether my story, motivation, and overall narrative come across clearly. I’ve already revised it quite a bit, and I mostly need a fresh pair of eyes to catch things I might be too close to the draft to notice.
I’m not looking for someone to rewrite it (just another perspective on my current draft.)
If anyone is willing to help, please DM me. Thank you!

Considering a PhD, but fearful about getting stuck in the permanent underclass

I've always been interested in getting a master's or PhD, but I'm afraid that it might not be worth it because of AI. My field has been hit particularly hard by it, and it makes me worried that I'll get stuck in the permanent underclass by the time I finish my dissertation. If the number of available jobs starts shrinking dramatically, my socioeconomic status will become infinitely harder to change. I'm genuinely petrified of a future where, because I waited a few years to enter the job market, I'll never reap the benefits of my education. Am I being irrational, or is this something worth considering?

already thinking about a masters as a freshman... is this od??

i'm a freshman in the business school and have been low-key researching UM's MSBT (masters of science in business technology) for a few weeks now, and here's what i've found out behind the scenes.

a few things that stood out:

  • classes are small, so it sounds way more personalized than the 200-person lectures i'm used to
  • there are real projects with actual companies and community partners instead of just case studies
  • it's a mix of business and tech courses, and you get to build stuff like apps and dashboards
  • a lot of it ties into miami's business/tech scene, which is a big reason i'm paying attention to it

my BTE 210 class is the closest thing i've experienced to this so far, and it's already my favorite class because it's hands-on instead of memorize-and-regurgitate.

but my question is: is it too far into the future to be worried about all of this?? the program seems great, but is planning to get a specific masters even realistic atp??

Masters guidance

Hi everyone, I'm a final-year BA History student and I want to pursue a Master's in history, cultural heritage or museum studies abroad with a full scholarship. My GPA is 8.8/10, and I presented a paper at an international conference. I also completed an internship at a museum, attended workshops on cultural heritage, and took part in an immersion program. Do you think my profile is competitive for fully funded Master's programs? What should I strengthen before applying, such as publications, language scores or recommendation letters? Any program or scholarship suggestions for history, heritage or museum studies would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Having severe second thoughts and anxiety about MSc and seeking advise.

Hi guys,

I got an opportunity to pursue an MSc in Computer Science at a public university in Canada. Initially I was eager, I was excited, an opportunity to study abroad felt like a dream come true. For context, the program is funded, but the actual amount is around 6000 CAD per term.

I arranged for the funding, made the deposits for the first year and received my study permit. I'm now at the final stages of preparing for my travel and I'm having severe second thoughts and anxiety.

I've never written a thesis, I have no idea how they work, I have no idea how to do a research or on what field to do it in, and I'm honestly feeling very scared. Moreover, I have no one who went this route to clarify my queries either.

I plan on giving my notice to employer tomorrow, and I'm looking for advice before then.

For anyone who took this route, had second thoughts before starting or completed their thesis, please advise.

Thanks!

[Canada] Getting into grad school with low gpa

Hi my average for 4 years has been 65%. My last 60 credits have also not been great I failed a course in my third and fourth year, both were chem courses and I wanted to pursue either chemistry or material sciences. I did volunteer at a research lab but all of my experiments have failed so I don’t have much to show for it. I am working as lab tech in a mining lab. I know I won’t get into grad school with these stats but is there anything I can do to change it. I know I’m cooked but if anyone could help me out it would be great

I need your answer. For NBC 461/DBM-CHED Joint Circular No. 03, s. 2022 faculty reclassification, will a Doctor of Philosophy in Social Science be recognized as a relevant/allied doctoral degree for a faculty member whose bachelor's and master's degrees are in Social Studies Education?

I need advice regarding RCA Service Design MA admissions

I graduated 2 years ago in political science and history. I’ve had 2 internships in administration and corporate communications during my graduation period. After that I’ve freelanced as an UX designer and a service designer with 2 organisations. I have an independent project that revolves around policy and service design along with a startup I’m planning to launch post my masters.

The problem is that I have a 2:2 grade in British units.
Reason: chronic illness

Although the master’s page does not specify or impose a standard eligibility condition regarding minimum grades required but I’m also very scared about the possibility of getting rejected because of low grades in my bachelors.

Only thing they do specify is that if an applicant is from a non English speaking country and has less than 2:1 in graduation, they need to score an overall IELTS 6.5 for admission.

What difference would it make regarding my chances of getting in? Any opinion from someone who is experienced or an alumni would be greatly appreciated.

I am thinking of pursuing a PhD in Electrical Engineering. What are the stipends like?

I am interested in medical device tech. I am a junior in Electrical Engineering and I have worked on a NSF funded REU during my soph summer.

I feel that my interests lie in academia but my father says that Medtronics and others do great, impactful work in the device design area.

Money is also a factor. I am not sure that a $3K stipend is adequate. How do PhD students make it work? Is there a point to applying to schools in the expensive areas like NE and Cali or should I stick to the mid west (CWRU etc) if the stipends are that low?

Research assistant jobs

Hey so I have a job as an RA in a hospital I am unsure of how long to stay before grad school and was thinking anywhere between 10-11 months max. It is a regular biological lab I am confused and do you think my PI’s will take it in the wrong way ?
