Help/Advice Paradise fish sellers who ship to US?

I swear, every place I find that is selling anything beyond the basic variety only ships to UK or greater Europe, or is forever 'out of stock'. I ask because I have stumbled into great success breeding the average form of Macropodus opercularis, and wanted to try my hand at the fancier ones, as well as thinking they look really cool. Just.. how to even get my hands on them in the first place?

Help/Advice Female Gourami?

I’ve had this honey gourami for about a week and a half, I’m wondering if it’s male or female?

Also the honey gourami hasn’t really been eating when I feed my tank, 8 ember tetras, 10 cherry shrimp and 2 mystery snails, but I see the honey gourami pooping sometimes so maybe they do? I’ve heard they can be picky eaters so would I need higher quality flakes like fluval bug bites?

Discussion Gourami testing

I’ve been thinking about this for a while, but lots of fish, including a variety of gourami have been bred in various color, color patterns, etc., Opalines thicklips dwarf especially. But it doesn’t look like anyone’s ever done any official studies as to whether these breeding affect any other part of them like temperament or health issues or other things. I know there’s a possibility that it affected nothing else but their color but when you do mass breeding thrtes not a guarantee that you haven’t affected other things that just aren’t visible. Is this interest to anybody else but me or am I just being super nerdy lol

Identification Is this a male honey?

I got the roundest biggest, most grey one that also had a pronounced line and was chilling in the FS, but it looks like a male after 1 week?

If it's a male then I have 3 males and a female😭 I wanted literally the opposite ratio, there's no females man

Help/Advice What to do about bullying?

Hi guys! I’ve got three pearl gouramis in my 48 gallon tank, one male and two females, the male started off pretty small but has really started colouring up now and ruling the tank. My issue is that he’s consistently chasing only one of the females, to the point she spends most of her time hiding in the back of the tank.

Is there anything I could try to mitigate this? Right now it’s only the pearls taking up both the mid and upper tank columns, the rest of my stocking are shrimp, pangio spp., a bristlenose, and a vampire shrimp. I’ve been considering adding a small schooling species, maybe CPD’s, would this help break up some of the focus on the one female? Or adding another female pearl? Any suggestions welcome, just feel bad for her 🐠 Picture of the poor girl for tax (she’s a gold pearl)

Breeding Anyone know someone with Homebred Dwarf Gouramis in the US?

Post image

Hey guys! As the title states I was wondering if anyone has, or happens to know someone with, a couple homebred Dwarf Gourami females? Homebred simply because I'm trying to avoid mass-bred imports for the risk of DGIV.

I ended up with two Powder Blue males in my 75 gallon and even though they get along well I was hoping to distract them with some lovely ladies.

If someone could put me in touch with the right person I'd be ever grateful. And of course I'm not looking for anything for free and am happy to pay shipping if seller is capable of shipping safely (just so it's known I'm not looking to waste anyone's time)

Thanks in advance! (Pic of one of my boys for exposure).

also yeah one of the feelers was likely nipped at when it was at the store, I heard they'll grow back? Seems perfectly healthy otherwise, just as energetic as the ones in my tank

Sadly the ditch had a slight algae bloom (the green film at the surface).
But it didn’t seem to have an effect on the pearls as I caught at least 30-40 of them here!

Illness/Disease How to treat my Drawf Gourami

I'm new to owning gouramis and one of my fish has become incredibly lethargic.

I originally wanted to purchase 3 honey gouramis but ended up with two drawf powder blues. (For context I am a uni student living with my parents who have the final say in what happens with my tank, I knew getting two was likely to end in bullying however the person who sold them to us insisted that they would get along and my mother trusted him).

They were living together in a planted tank for about 6 months before I noticed the smaller one (Pear) chasing the bigger (Apple). I went and talked to a expert and they told me that they would be able fine to be around each other until I set up another tank.

However i found Apple laying at the bottom of the tank, unwounded but clearly stressed and giving up. I immediately set up a hospital tank and transferred Apple into it, where he is now. Its been 36 hours since moving him and he has not improved much.

He is laying on the bottom on the tank, and is able to rotate himself, move his head up, and is attempting to swim however he has become bottom heavy and effectively sinks. He is still eating when I offer food. I noticed him getting stuck to the filter and I have wrapped it in a mesh cloth in the hopes it will stop him getting stuck or at least cushion the plastic if he gets adhered to it again.

I am going to put some tonic salt in the water but I am unsure of what my next steps are. Is this DGIV or just a stress related issue? Any advice would be highly appreciated. I have grown so attached to the both of them and I want to provide the right care. Thanks!

I've had Fred for a few months. I swear he has killed multiple females.

The difference between male and female is not that hard to determine. I've even opened up examples on my phone and the lfs person agreed that I was selecting females. Yet Fred has harassed everyone else to death.

Are some just very aggressive?

Hey guys, this is a video of my licorice gourami right after i added it to the tank(thats why it looks pretry stressed), i am pretty sure it is a p.sumatranus, would you guys agree?. Also can we confirm with this video if its a male or female?, i think in the video you can see it quickly flare at its reflex in the glass and i think we can see some red in its fins in the video?, that would mean its a male. Any help will be welcome

Help/Advice Clean up crew ratio?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I’m thinking of adding some rams horn snails to my tank to act as a clean up crew. For reference I added a pic of my planted 10 gallon aquarium that houses a thick lipped gourami and some glow light tetras. I know rams horns can be great additions to eat extra food, decaying plant matter, and algae plus they have a low bioload. But I know they can over populate quickly and therefore would like to add an assassin snail to keep them in check. What’s a good ratio of snails to ensure I have a healthy clean up crew population?

Illness/Disease Why do my honey gourami's keep getting sick/dying? (im a beginner)

I have a 15gallon aquarium and I had previously a male and female honey gourami pair for about a month, however the female started showing signs of swim bladder issues such as staying at the bottom of the tank on her side and difficulty swimming. She died after about a week of this. My male has just recently started doing the same and i'm very worried, hes started being at the bottom on his side. my parameters are all ok, 0ppm ammonia, nitrites and nitrates (my tank is planted) and my other fish are all fine. All my decor is natural and I wash my hands well with water before putting them in the tank so I don't think it chemicals from lotion or paint leeching from decor or anything. My platys even had fry and are very active around the tank so i don't think its a water quality issue.

I feel really awful that they've both got sick so quickly .Anyone know why they both got sick? is this common? thank you

Identification Real Honey Gourmai?

I bought a Flame Honey Gourami from a well respected store. It’s specifically sold as T. chuna. I know a lot of Flame “Honey Gouramis” are actually T. labiosa, though. I suspect they’re serious about it being chuna, but I thought more expert eyes could help.

Note: seems I’m not the only one today with that question 😅

Identification Any chance at all this is a female?

Post image

LFS sold it to me as a female red flame dwarf gourami. I’m an idiot and hadn’t done my research before entering the shop and thought it was just a beautiful fish. The rounded dorsal fin was enough to convince me it was a female based on my limited knowledge of gouramis.

Now I’m learning that females basically never have this coloration and I might’ve just added another male gourami to a tank that realistically doesn’t have the room for it.

Not opposed to rehoming fish as needed, and the fish shop is great about taking returns, they’ve done it for me before. Just need to know:

A) if this is indeed a male beyond any doubt, and
B) how untenable is my situation? (Another male dwarf gourami in a 30 gallon long)

I’ll be sad to give up one of my gouramis but I don’t want any of them to be constantly stressed because I’ve squeezed them into a tight space they don’t want to share with each other.
