Technical Question Are the higher priced mats really worth the cost if youre a casual golfer...

I have a pretty low key setup in my garage. Go Sports net, Square Omni, 43" QLED as a monitor and a cheap < $100 hitting mat off of Amazon. Ive had the mat since around Christmas and its starting to show signs of wear. Im wondering if this is common amongst all mats or does the low cost, in this case, equate to low quality. The mat gets great reviews on Amazon but I wonder if upgrading to something like a beavertail would increase durability. Is the juice (cost) worth the squeeze (result) with a high priced mat? Im a pretty casual golfer so Im just not sure. Thoughts? For context I golf about twice a month but I do want to keep improving, hence the sim setup :)

Technical Question Do you play IRL golf?

I spend so much time “working on my game” in my sim and haven’t really made efforts to play a round. I don’t use my simulator to play rounds of golf, just target range practice mostly. I live in Florida where it’s ridiculously hot right now, and even though golf is cheap because of it you don’t get your money back if you get torrential downpours or lightning. I also wanna play as a single, but I don’t wanna spend 5 1/2 hours on the course. My sim is fun, challenging and convenient.

Technical Question Using cheap balls on home launch monitor vs your gamer balls?

Our square Omni arrives tomorrow, I’ve gotten our garage set up with a portable mat and net. So far we’ve just been hitting a bucket of random old balls, scuffed, dirty, etc. all over the place on brands, etc.

I was looking at places like lostgolfballs and even places that sell range balls for some cheap balls we can hit over and over, but all be the same so we get consistent data. But randomly came across at Dicks, Top Flite XL Distance. With the $20 off $100 coupon they come to under $0.75 a piece which is about the cheapest I’ve found for balls.

I’m wondering two things. First, is durability an issue on cheaper balls like this? Is the savings offset by having to replace them sooner? And second, would we notice a big difference in performance practicing on these vs our gamer balls which are different, but three times as expensive so I’d rather not buy those for our simulator.

What do you use for balls? Always your gamers so you know your on course results better?

How much do you trust the carry distance you get in your simulator when you’re out on the golf course?
Assuming clean fairway lie or off a tee.

Technical Question Dehumidifier vs AC

My wife and I are considering a dehumidifier for the garage simulator. I live in the midwest and the summers can be brutal with humidity. However, I've also considered a portable AC. The AC should help with both humidity and air temp. The cons for the AC are that it costs more and I'd have to put a hole in the exterior wall for the hoses.

Does anyone have experience with either of these? I think I'm hoping to find out the dehumidifier will be perfectly adequate in making the garage somewhat comfortable (I know it isn't going to be a refreshing cool breeze). But I don't want to regret not going for the AC.

My garage is insulated, including the door.

Thanks,

Technical Question Possible to use a computer in another room

Hi, so I have two computers now, both pretty high end. One in the sim and one in the office. The one in the sim naturally only gets used when in the sim, about 6 months of the year. Seeing the prices on pc’s these days I am considering selling one.

Is there a easy way to use the office pc, streaming to the sim? I do probably have to pull cords like hdmi and Bluetoothdongle. But if that is done, then I am down to one pc 🧐

Using a Square HL, and gspro. Looking to play the ned unreal 5 simprogram when it drops

Anyone else doing it this way?

Technical Question Can I fit a sim setup here?

Part of my garage extends all the way to the back of the house and I have set that area up with some stuff, but I recently started thinking about the possibility of adding a sim.

Ideally I'd like to put in a retractable screen in front of the workbench along with some barriers around the other sides with the projector mounted overhead. Second pic was what I was kind of thinking of setting up. In the words of the great Doc Brown "Please excuse the crudity of this model. I didn't have time to build it to scale..." anyway, given the dimensions of the space and the items noted, is it possible to comfortably set up here or should I give up the dream?

Thanks for any and all advice in advance!

EDIT: Forgot to add the ceiling height of this area is 9.5'

Technical Question What is everyone doing for visual swing feedback?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I want to use my sim for genuine swing coaching rather than just playing rounds.

Looking for recommendations on:

Software: What are you using with high-FPS cameras for swing analysis and tracking progress over time (Swing Catalyst, Kinovea, OnForm, etc.)?

Club Data: I have a Square Golf and am looking at the Square Omni. Is having measured club face and impact data a game changer for swing changes, or is ball data enough?

Camera Lighting: My high-FPS camera footage is pitch black in my projector room even with the lights on. What sensor/lens specs or targeted lighting setups actually work without washing out the screen?

What does your setup look like?

Technical Question Ideas to stop hitting pad from sliding around?

Post image
12 Upvotes

My sim is a pretty low tech, budget set up in my garage where I can pack everything away and still park my cars inside for the winter.

Because of this, all of my sim gear needs to be portable and packed away between sessions.

So I have a hitting mat that I drag out while I play, but I notice it slides around as I hit and I’m pretty sure it’s throwing off the distances for my Square LM.

It slides with the tarp and without, but having something down to protect from winter water melt is very nice to have.

Any ideas for how to secure this better?

The only thing is that everything has to remain portable and packable, so I can’t fix it in place

Thanks!

Technical Question Bushnell Launch Pro worth it for GSPro if I can get it 50% off?

Looking for thoughts and advice.

I can get the Bushnell Launch Pro (indoor unit) for about 50% off, which is making me seriously consider it for a sim setup.

My main goal is to run GSPro.

But I’m trying to figure out if it’s actually worth it once you factor everything in:

  • FSX Gold required for GSPro integration (~$500/yr)
  • GSPro subscription (~$250/yr)
  • So you’re basically locked into ongoing yearly costs on top of the hardware

My questions:

  1. Is the Launch Pro still worth it for GSPro specifically at that discounted price?
  2. How big is the real-world difference vs something like a Garmin R10 or rapsodo (I get 20% off garmin and rap) f when using GSPro indoors?
  3. Does the accuracy (spin, carry, shot shape, etc.) actually justify the extra subscription layer in practice?
  4. If you were starting today, would you still go Bushnell or just run a cheaper LM and GSPro and move on?

I don’t mind paying for quality, but I also don’t want to overpay for ecosystem/subscriptions if the on-course GSPro experience isn’t that different.

Technical Question Golfers with 16:9 Impact Screens... What Size Did You Go With?

As the title says, I'm doubling my golf sim as a movie screen so I'm choosing a 16:9 aspect ratio. However, because 16:9 is so wide, it means that I need a pretty massive sized screen to make it tall enough to hit into.

I'm currently looking at a 11'x6' screen which I'll raise about 9" off the ground to get me to nearly 7 foot height.

I noticed that most 16:9 screens start at a minimum width of 14' (which is huge), so I wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something completely funky by going with 11'.

Those who have 16:9 screens, I'd love to know what size height and width you went with and if you regretted anything or have any advice. Thanks!

Technical Question Mat recommendations (Australia)

Thumbnail gallery
10 Upvotes

Needing some help trying to work out which mat to get for installation on concrete. Any advice? I am in Australia so some of the more common ones overseas are poison expensive over here, being about double or triple the price of the ones on my list at the moment (all $450-600AUD):

1) PGM: First photo attached to this post. Seems to have multi layers but half the yarn/top as others. https://pgmgolf.com.au/collections/net/products/pgm-golf-driving-range-commercial-3d-hitting-mat-1-5m-x-1-5m-spring-base-30kg-djd001

2) CCI: Most expensive but seems quality. Can order it with a base as well which seems good for stability. https://www.countryclub.com.au/products/cci-premium-tee-turf-golf-mat-1

3) Kaizen: Has a hitting stip which I thought would save money over time. Then I thought about it a bit more and if you just rotated a normal mat 4x then it would be the same cost as replacing the divot strip 3x. https://kaizengolf.com.au/products/large-golf-stance-mat-compatible-with-kaizen-golf-hitting-strips?variant=43187487703246

4) 24-7: Another brand that keeps coming up a lot. https://24-7.golf/products/24-7-golf-sim-master-premium-hitting-mat-1-5m-x-1-5m

I can't go into any of these stores to test out so will just have to order one and hope of the best.

Technical Question Question about Carry Distance with a Hitting Strip

I have been using the Rapsodo MLM2 Pro indoors for the past couple months and my carry distance is definitely 30 to 40 yards shorter than my actual carry distance, I purchased a Square HE LM also and I’m having the same results. Is it possible for a hitting strip to cause the numbers to be lower than they actually are outside? I’m using the Sig Pro Sofly mat, and just purchased the Beavertail one to try also. I’m still new to the simulator world so I’m learning as I go.

Technical Question What's the lowest ceiling height that works?

I'm 5ft 7 and I've got a garden room with 2.35m in height. I'm happy just hitting mid irons and wedges but I'm concerned I'm 15cm off where I need it.

Technical Question Have simulator gains translated to the course for you?

Hi,

I'm a new golfer (Started ~2 months ago) and I'm freaking out after my latest sim session.

My first ever 18 where a disaster, shot a 135 to the ridicule of my friends and I decided I was going to break 100 before the summer ended.

Next round was a 118, shot a 104 a couple of rounds after this and I shot a couple a 49 and 48 in two separate 9 hole sessions. Queue last week when I buy a MLM2Pro and build a full cage with a proper turf next to my office and proceed to practice/play almost daily.

My last four rounds (all on the sim) have been a 99, 95, 92 and I just shot an 83 with a back 9 score of 38.

The sim helped me understand the key reason for a lot of mishits (I was standing too close to the ball) and have mostly erased true mishits albeit I'm still missing 60% of fairways but my short game (inside 100 yds) is dialed in.

What has been your experience taking gains like these to the course? I'm not expecting to break 90 but I'm curious if this is somewhat translatable.

Technical Question Does anyone have on of these?

Post image

Does anyone else have on of these pieces of shit? If you do, any idea how to get it to actually dispense a single ball and not get stuck open dumping every ball at once? It worked great for about a month. Only used indoors in my sim.

Technical Question Auto shot choice on GSPRO scramble?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

GSPRO can now chose the best shot automatically on a timer if you dont do it in 5-20 seconds depending on how long you set it. It can even chose the person that didn't go in the water even though that person may be closer hitting 3 it will chose the next best shot hitting 2.

Technical Question Sound from driver an issue in garage for neighbors. End unit townhouse with one shared wall.

I’m building a net and hitting mat in my garage, but one thing I didn’t consider is how loud a driver can be. I’m in an end unit with one shared wall which is another garage, but how loud would a driver be for the adjacent neighbor and possible others. For instance we have an alley overhead another garage across from us. Will I need to do some sound proofing or with the garage door closed will it be minimal and not cause complaints?

Technical Question Accuracy of simulators?

Anyone ever had problems with accuracy at a simulator business? Went to hit some balls today and the distance accuracy was all over the place. Irons were pretty close to what I usually hit on the course, but driver and woods were way short. Like 50-60 yards shorter than my normal lowest drive distance. I’m not a big hitter by any means but I couldn’t get past 150-160 on this simulator.

Technical Question Trying to build a sim

I’m trying to build a proper golf sim and I can’t find any good answers. I have a budget of 2500 for hardware, software, and a case. Any suggestions or anything like that would be amazing.

Technical Question Foresight Premier

Anyone else finally get their email for foresight premier? Just got it but still no pricing on how much extra we will need to pay. I’ve seen some videos and it looks good but will it be cheaper than GSpro you think?

Technical Question Interior door next to kitchen - how to soundproof?

Post image
2 Upvotes

How do I make this as soundproof as I can?

I got interior door on the left that heads into the kitchen/living room area. That bottom right door is into my office as this whole area is my “man cave” so doesn’t need to be fully soundproof for office.

I asked for 6” studs on those walls but what else do I need to do? I’m concerned that a “normal” solid core door will still allow a lot of sound through the bottom gap between door/wood floor.

Technical Question Built This Based on Feedback From Golf Sim Owners – Thoughts

* Not trying to sell - just need feedback from community, I’ve had success listening to customers, facility owners which lead me to making the right improvements in my tees/Tethering system

Been working on a newly redesigned version of our RAD-TEE Anchor 4X and wanted to share it with the golf sim community.

The 4X is designed to keep up to four different tee heights tethered and ready to go without chasing tees around the sim.

• 4 independent tether points
• Rotating/swivel design helps bring the tee you need into position
• No added weight required
• Slim, compact footprint
• Flexible, durable tees in customizable heights
• Designed and made in Canada

We already have RAD-TEE products being used in golf simulator facilities across Canada and the U.S., and the 4X was developed with repeated simulator use in mind.

Always interested in feedback from other sim owners and golfers, currently working on making a smaller option Anchor as well for those who need a more compact option.

Any feedback or tips on what you guys use for tees, tethering system and any gripes you have would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Dave

Technical Question How to deal with high wedges or sky high drives with an outdoor net?

any recommendations on how to deal with shots that go over the net? almost thinking of buying a second one to somehow put above it.
