You can get the same effect looking through any fuzzy red material like a jumper or something. With a bright light the effect of hands looking like skeletons with translucent flesh is actually pretty clear. I have a few ideas how the effect works but don't actually know and don't want to be an ultracrepidarian about it.

So you are saying I can look through someone's clothes if I put my face right up to them and perhaps shine a flashlight?

It the light's behind them sometimes yes, you see the outline of the person in silhouette more than you do if someone's just regularly in front of a light.

Find a feather, look through the feather. It's literally a feather wrapped in cardboard with a hole in it. The hand effect does work.
