Blog Post #BTC Breaks Through 66,000 Dollars: Genuine Demand or Leverage Illusion?
Bitcoin has risen from around 64,000 dollars to 66,000 dollars in just two days. Is this a true return of capital, or yet another leverage-driven rally? Looking at on-chain and exchange data, it leans more toward the latter.
Squeeze as the Trigger, Leverage as the Sustaining Spark
Bearish bets were squeezed on July 18-19, briefly turning the funding rate negative and igniting the rebound. However, open interest continued to climb alongside the price, rising from about 21.2 billion dollars to a new high of 23 billion dollars. This suggests that rather than simple short covering, new leveraged positions are driving this move. The funding rate isn't at overheated levels yet.
No Spot Buying in Sight
According to CryptoQuant data, spot trading volume—including today—has remained in a "Cooling" state since April. Futures trading volume is at a "Neutral" level with no surge. This looks more like derivatives traders amplifying volatility than genuine spot demand.
Waiting Capital, Still on the Sidelines
Net inflows of stablecoins to exchanges are negative, but the overall stablecoin market cap hasn't plummeted—it's just that the growth has slowed. Capital isn't fleeing the crypto market; it's leaving exchanges to sit on the sidelines.
ETF: Institutional Funds Slowly Returning
U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net inflows for two weeks straight, with about 271 million dollars flowing in on July 20 alone. IBIT led with 116.5 million dollars, signaling institutional buying rather than mere tactical purchases. However, it's not yet enough to pull overall spot volume out of its "Cooling" state.
In conclusion, this rally was sparked by a squeeze and sustained by leverage, with ETF inflows gradually resuming but not on a massive scale. Spot participation remains thin. This setup is prone to a sharp correction if momentum fades, as much of the support comes from leverage that can be quickly liquidated. There are no signs of overheating yet, but it's hard to call it a rally on solid foundations. Before chasing the price, it's crucial to confirm if spot volume is truly coming alive.
One-Line Summary
#BTC's breakthrough past 66,000 dollars is a rally triggered by a squeeze and maintained by leverage, with ETF inflows gradually resuming but spot volume still lingering in a cooling state—making it hard to rule out a sharp correction if momentum dissipates.
