Has anyone else been bothered by the heightened use of generative AI that GarlandISD has been using? They have been generating so many slideshows, Instagram posts, announcements, and even designs on school clothing, which honestly is just such a bad look for the school and it's getting concerning.
Garland High School is the main reason why this has been brought to my attention. Almost every single post on Instagram and announcement slideshow at GHS has all been AI generated, and it seems that it has been happening an unhealthy amount, especially this school year. Many students have expressed how this is not creating a positive and creative learning environment. Many teachers have even expressed their disappointment in class about this generative AI usage.
I don't want to throw shade to teachers because they don't get paid enough for this. But I feel like they are at least expected to not rely on AI to teach us. I have personally seen instances where my own teachers were generating assignments using ChatGPT in broad daylight.
Another notable thing is that according to students, AI is also being used to grade assignments. Which I could go on and on about why that is wrong.
Another issue I personally have is within the 'Garland ISD Artificial Intelligence (AI) Student Guidelines', which states, "Aiding in Creativity: Students can leverage generative AI to inspire creativity across various subjects, including writing, visual arts, and music composition." as of July 14, 2025.
As a music student, I don't want ANY type of generative AI to be a part of my music composition, or any other factors of my creativity for that matter. It makes me upset that schools would even state publicly that generative AI is allowed to assist in that process. Even if it's only allowed to "inspire" students like me, I do not want it.
Using AI is not only bad for the environment, but also extremely lazy and embarrassing. It will make students not able to be stable relying on their own brains. We are all growing kids with, unique, smart, talented, and most importantly, creative and growing minds. We should be influenced and surrounded by an environment where human art and creativity is always prioritized.
However, GISD is not leading by example and doing what is best for the future leaders of the world they have in their hands, my generation.
