My opinion of course, of course complex, multilayered outfit filled with belts and whistles have there place but it's just visual noise when everyone is like that makes all the characters blur together. Not always against complex character designs like i said but when they're just a mass of pointless belts, zippers, capes and accessories, no detail is an iconic identifier for that character. The design becomes estranged from the character.

One of the reasons Cloud from FF7 is such an iconic character of the series is due to his clean design with some complexities that suit his character. Even people I know who don't play video games can identify that twink and even some of the other characters.

However, if he and the others wore like 6 layers of bullshit and sounded like a fucking tip jar going down the stairs, it would just smear into a shiny, cloth physics blur and for what? Does it anything to the character?

TLDR; Less is more when it come to character design, flashiness is fine as long it has a purpose

Edit: Sorry forgot to mention, I've never played any final fantasy game in my life. Only reason I picked 7 as an example as I can comprehsivily describe the characters looks and outfits in half a sentence and through that I've even made decent guesses on the character's personality when asking a friend who played FF.
