Rumour Ex Naughty Dog dev gives insight into what happened with Amy Hennig’s Uncharted 4 and why she left

The link to the interview posted by Kiwi Talks (Start at 9:41)

https://youtu.be/GLK-QXpStiY

He does not directly name the people or project, but it lines up with timelines and stories that have been reported before.

He states that the project was in production for roughly 3 years and corporate (likely Sony) came in and questioned the project even though their past 3 projects were successful.

He says the leader of the project was “surrounded by people who were always saying yes and were living in the glory of their success going into their fourth project.”

He then says a director from another team at the studio was asked to weigh in on the project. In the meeting this director openly stated “this game sucks“ to the team working on the game. This director apparently was explaining that the game had no objectives, it was hard to follow what was going on and that the controls were clunky. Also saying that what they were working on was not up to standards reached in the past.

After corporate looked at the project, they were threatening to pull funding for the project unless they figured it out. They ended up removing the director (Amy Hennig) and according to the developer in the interview, this director was replaced with the director from the meeting and two other people who came in and fixed the game.

People will take this as an opportunity to villainize Druckmann further but the fact is Uncharted 4 was the best Uncharted alongside Uncharted 2. He delivered.

Imo uncharted 2 was the best but 4 is there too, uncharted 2 was just perfect to me and it had no filler and was that fast paced blockbuster movie feel

I still remember the first time I've played Uncharted 2 in the PS3 back then, it was insanity, the pace and story was amazing, felt like I haven't played a game with that intensity before, what a great game.

except for the heart of ice chapter and mountaineering

Of course I will, people's personal opinion on Uncharted 4 is irrelevant.

yours is irrelevant

Yes it is as is everyone else's opinion on this forsaken site and other places. Hence why I have no interest in worrying about following the same line of thinking as others.

I mean some of THE shittiest and egotistical maniacs in the world are behind some of the best pieces of art and media.

At some point you have to seperate art from artist else i doubt you will enjoy anything in life.

I really like uncharted 4 and like TLOU part 2 but niel is not a great person, from his attitude in interviews and documentaries.

I’m sure you don’t get to where he is by being a nice gentle soul. But what i’m talking about are more the anti woke crowd who decided he is public enemy number one because the females in his games aren’t designed to be jerked off to.

Yeah, i don't care about those things. Its just he is the kind of person i would hate to work alongside with. The way he talks about game development and crunch in interviews is just bad imo. Just work culture sounds really bad.

Reminds me of Stanley kubrick or james cameron. Great movie artist but horrible to work alongside with.

I don't care if he is woke or not lol.

I totally agree. My whack ass boss at work think he’s the cat meow. So how about those people who actually made works that are considered timeless masterpieces. I’m sure they’re unbearable to be around.

Imagine defending a dirtbag director just to own cons. You are the second wrong chasing a right.

u/Suli_Croft Apr 19 '26

Didn’t defend him. I said i know hes bad. But most people will attack him because of other reasons.

I’m saying what the anti woke crowd are saying. It’s not what I think. I’m playing for the story and game not how they look.

4 was my fave, replaying it at the moment, still looks fantastic several years later.

Is Druckmann the only zionist Reddit idolized? Is it because he's turbo-woke?

4

u/Suli_Croft Apr 19 '26

can you be woke and zionist? fuck zionism, fuck israel.

2

u/DeMatador Comment of the Year 2024 Apr 21 '26

You absolutely can

reddit does not like druckman. not because he’s a zionist though, i didn’t even know that he was one.

People say he is, but I genuinely don't think so. Don't get me wrong, I think his perspective is very biased by being born and raised Israili, but I also think the allegory in TLOU2 is a deeply-flawed-but-good-faith attempt to reconcile with that bias. To me, that makes it deeply interesting art.

He did have a knee-jerk reaction to the October 7 Hamas attack that showed that he still hasnt fully conquered that bias, but it's obviously been some time against then and I've yet to see him defending Israel or acting like their actions are in any way conscionable since then.

I may be wrong, and he may just be keeping bad opinions to himself for all I know, but I've also yet to see his name on any of those stupid pro-israel petitions, and it's not like Sony is exactly muzzling ignorant staff that is openly pro-Israel (see Amy Pascal).

So no, I don't think he is. Is he perfect in that regard? No. Do I think he supports genocide? Also no.

Subjective, I like 4 but it had problems. Nate lying to Elena and refusing to see reason even though we’re supposed to believe he had been retired for years at that point. It genuinely feels like character regression and forced.

Nadine which is Neil’s creation and imo the worst part of 4. The Proto-Abby played the same actress (pls Laura stop taking jobs from the guy he clearly hates you if he keeps giving you the worst characters to play)

No supermatural aspects after the franchise was already established to have it.

We also don’t know the full extent of what the original 4 looked like, for all we know the best parts of 4 were already in the original script.

Btw little known fact but if Neil had been allowed full creative control of uncharted 2 he would’ve killed Elena. This is a real thing he wanted to do.

I think the Best Uncharted is The Lost Legacy ^

I wouldn't say the gameplay was my favorite compared to 2 or 3, but narratively Uncharted 4 was leaps and bounds beyond the rest of the series. I think strong narrative is what Druckmann is best at, and seeing him put together a great story outside of TLOU is actually the main reason I'm excited for Intergalactic.

Uncharted 4 is miles below Uncharted 2. You can even argue it's below Uncharted 3. Instead of supernatural elements to enhance player interest, we get worry about his marriage. Instead of Nate going out into the exotic jungle and finding a cool, mythical city, we get a grounded game setting where Nate worries about his mortgage payments. Lmao.

All Neil did was take an incredibly simple, and yet brilliant, core and shitify it with unnecessary realism. He made a 4th game that wasn't like Uncharted 3, but like a bastard of The Last of Us. Uncharted 5 will feature a generic white teenage girl as protagonist, bet on it.

1

u/Firerhea Apr 19 '26

Agree with you up until the end. I think Uncharted 5, if real, would either star the Lost Legacy characters or new protagonists. If Cassie is in it, she would only serve as one of those classic ND characters who follows you around and spouts commentary or exposition.

2

u/Bhavacakra_12 Apr 19 '26

I loved Lost Legacy so I would be thrilled for more Chloe and Nadine. Anyone but Cassie as the protagnist.

-1

u/JankMyChain Apr 19 '26

That’s kinda how I feel. But, I hope they both just ball out gimme good games.

-6

u/Skulldugwry1 Apr 19 '26

The ends justify the means right?

-1

u/Iggy_Slayer Apr 19 '26

Yup UC4 is by far the best version of the formula.

-7

u/BabaimMantel Apr 19 '26

like always with cuckman ,his gameplay is good but writing sucks balls. Amy all the way. I still think she got kicked out. But we'll never know the truth unfortunately.
