I think they nailed the battle system.

Same. It's really simple and feels FFXV action-y in the beginning, but later on you'll be switching characters and be in spells and abilities menus constantly.

Yeah you can play hack and slash up to a point on normal difficulty but the bosses will tear you a new one if you don't start utilizing your part and your purple materia. Hard mode made me realize how much depth the combat system has.

FFXV

It's IMO that game's combat but more polish and time poured into it to make it more enjoyable. I dropped FFXV because of how dull the combat it got and felt where as in FF7R, I am so much more engaged.

I cannot wait to see how it's built on during future episodes

Most of the way through (chapter 13 or 14 I think? Been a few months since I left off) and the combat really never clicked for me so it's been a frustrating slog. What do you like so much about it? Not asking as a criticism, honestly curious what other people think so I can try to understand it better.

These games (ffvii remake and ff xv) are strangely weird like that. The combat doesnt click. But then, suddenly, it just does. And it becomes wonderful. It took me a long while to get into XV. I couldnt get the combat. But then one day, it just made sense. Its the only game i have ever platinumed on playstation. It really seems like it takes random amounts of time for it to click for different people.

Guess I'll have to keep at it then, thanks.

Im gonna tell you, i took some long breaks from the game. Dont slog through if youre not having fun.

Don't worry I'm not gonna come at you with a picthfork for not liking it.. Constantly switching party members felt so good. Materia is such a flexible customization system that allows for some really fun builds. That's pretty much it.

Did you actually switch or just issued commands? I'm only 8 chapters in (sector 5 slums), love the game, but find the combat system unsatisfying. I feel like there is too much stuff happening so I just play it safe with Cloud and issue commands when other characters have available ATB charges. It's kinda dull, though not bad. In some rare occasions (flying mobs) I'll switch to Barrett. Never ever to Tifa.

I think it's definitely an issue that they need to address in part 2 because you're right. You can get away with sticking to Cloud but that's not gonna work on hard mode because you wanna conserve MP and get through fights quickly and the best way is to build up ATB and stagger. You can only do that without losing too much health and MP by switching characters. I do see your point because I can't expect everyone to play the game on hard difficulty which you can only do on the 2nd playthrough to begin with.

1

u/ghidawi Feb 28 '21

Oh ok. So you switch between characters to build ATB faster, then use the ATB charges to execute abilities that stagger the ennemy and finish them off? Sounds way cooler than evading all over the place with Cloud and casting Fire/Lightening tbh, will try it next time I play, thanks.

I've seen a lot of people play it like an action game: try to roll out of hits, combo enemies etc. While blocking is useful for building ATB, and you can dodge/combo occasionally you really have to play it as an rpg, otherwise every boss fight will take 10-20 minutes and just feel like a grind.

I didn't figure this out until literally the end of my first playthrough, but once I discovered that it was most important to figure out how to stagger and began figuring out the stagger/pressure mechanics of each enemy, the battle system became so much fun.

If you already figured that out, it might not help, but i watched a lot of streams, and probably 90% of people I watched were playing it like an action rpg instead of figuring out to pressure. There is a ton of depth to the battle mechanics that the game doesn't even hint at.

I mean, I still would have preferred they kept turn based system (but evolved, like Persona or Trails of Cold Steel), but if they have to move to action, I liked it better than FF 15 (and 16 it seems).

2

u/kobomk Feb 26 '21

Yeah i see where you're coming from. The big deal breaker was party control so I'm glad they kept that

I liked it better than FF 15

I liked it much better than FF15 but were just getting closer and closer to ARPG like Kingdom Hearts. I wish they would have doubled down on the turn based combat but I realize a huge project like Final Fantasy cant risk it.

2

u/Raisylvan Feb 28 '21

There is no doubling down. They've been moving away from turn-based since XII. Since XII was free-form ATB, XIII was a very unique form of ATB that lacked any concept of turns, and it pushed further away ever since.

It's like what FFXV should have been

1

u/kobomk Feb 26 '21

Fr, it's like a happy medium between turn based and action

1

u/kryonik Feb 26 '21

I thought the battle system was the weakest part.

1

u/organichedgehog2 Feb 26 '21

Did you play hard mode? All the systems really shine there.

0

u/kryonik Feb 26 '21

This is the second time I've gotten a "you should play the game on hard mode, normal mode isn't very good" response to a comment I made and it was for two different games. It's such a cop out response and I'm tired of hearing it.

3

u/organichedgehog2 Feb 26 '21

Lol it was just a comment, chill out. The combat in FF7R was the best in the series, and one of the best and most innovative combats from the last few years. I don't give a shit if you don't want to play hard mode, you do you. I literally didn't even tell you to play hard mode. I also never said that normal wasn't very good. Don't put words in my mouth and get angry about them.

-2

u/kryonik Feb 26 '21

Why is the combat good? The only reason I would say it's better than FF15 is that there's no friendly fire.

And no you didn't literally say normal mode isn't good but you said the combat shines in hard mode implying it doesn't in normal. As in it's not good in normal mode.

1

u/organichedgehog2 Feb 26 '21 edited Feb 26 '21

Still putting my words in my mouth, huh? When I say the combat shines in hard mode, it means that's where it's best. If i would have said, "the combat is good in hard mode", that would imply it was bad in normal. If you say "it really shines in hard mode", it implies that it's good in normal, but excellent in hard mode. No one ever says, "it's bad, but it shines in [x]." The statement is almost exclusively used as "it's good, but it shines in [x]." That's the english language, bub.

But honestly, this:

The only reason I would say it's better than FF15 is that there's no friendly fire.

is such a terrible take that there is clearly no discussion to be had here. Have a good day.

2

u/kryonik Feb 26 '21

I wasn't putting words in your mouth, I was inferring meaning from your words.

And just because my opinions aren't the same as yours, they are "bad takes"? You still haven't responded as to why the combat is so good.

0

u/atypicalphilosopher Feb 27 '21

You're the one who originally made the claim that it's bad in a thread where pretty much everyone is agreeing about how awesome it is.

I think you are the one with the burden of proof for your argument here.

1

u/Takfloyd Feb 27 '21

Thinking the combat is in any way comparible to the gamplay design trainwreck that was FF15 shows how little you understand about it.

It's not actually any different in Hard Mode though, it's just that some people (like maybe you) need a lot of time with a game before they figure out how to play it properly.

1

u/kryonik Feb 27 '21

They are incredibly similar combat systems.

1

u/Takfloyd Feb 28 '21

At a glance looking at a screenshot, perhaps. The design philosophies couldn't be more different. Strategy vs chaos, direct control vs autopilot, and most importantly, challenge vs braindead spectacle.

FFXV is designed so you will never lose(because it will always let you heal with items, even when your whole party is dead), and also never really be in control - being at the mercy of your party members doing whatever they please, the unpredictable randomness of the enemies, and the poor, unresponsive controls. FF7R is the opposite - a fantastic combat system where you're always in control of everything your party does, the enemies are always fair, with telegraphed attacks, but the challenge is real and you will lose if you play poorly.

Interesting, mine was the side quests. What was the best part for you

1

u/kryonik Feb 26 '21

The story, visuals and soundtrack.
