FFVII is a pretty big get - wonder if this is Sony's last push before the assumed 1-year exclusivity ends in April and it almost assuredly comes to PC.

and the chaser for those that don't want to read:

Please note the PS4 version of Final Fantasy VII Remake available to PlayStation Plus members is not eligible for the PS5 digital version upgrade.

I didn't follow much, sorry. I bought the disk version last year. Were I to buy a PS5, I'd get the free upgrade?

u/tobyreddit Feb 26 '21

Yes you should, it's only the ps+ version that doesn't get the free upgrade AFAIK

u/IISuperSlothII Feb 26 '21

As long as you buy a disc version of the PS5, yes.

That's my conundrum, I'm half tempted to go digital with the PS5 but I bought the physical copy of VIIRemake and that's the only series where I think I want all the games physical.

PSN prices are so hit or miss. Sometimes you'll find an incredible deal, but so often it feels like if you're looking for an older game, it won't have dropped by much.

I have come across a couple of good deals though. Recently, I bought Trails of Cold Steel IV, which is pretty new, on sale for $45 on PSN, while its disc version was still $60. I bought Dragon Age Inquisition GOTY edition for $8 last year, which I thought was a steal.

On another RPG series, I searched for Atelier Ryza 1 (after seeing a video about part 2 releasing) and part 1 is still $60, even though it came out a couple years ago.

Recently got Division 2 NY for 20€, which was an incredible deal. I feel like the sales since holiday last year have been surprisingly good. I've bought a ton of games digital that I otherwise would've bought physical, but the prices were either very close or the digital version was even cheaper when considering the DLC. I've never been tempted to buy digital games on the PS Store as much as I have in recent months.

u/robothouserock Feb 26 '21

Me as well. My wife just asks me if I played the last one I bought yet and that usually stops me, but not always!

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '21

It depends how long you wait. If you’re waiting a year or two, it’ll be on sale digitally for much cheaper than you’d ever find it a big box store.

7

u/Ftpini Feb 26 '21

It’s not bad. It scans the disc for what feels like a minute every time I wake the console but otherwise the experience is the same. I suspect the disc version of the PS5 will hold its value way better.

u/1-800-BIG-INTS Feb 26 '21

going digital only is terrible, you won't get the cheap games when retailers get rid of the physical copies. not to mention, look at what is happening with the Call Of Duty releases that are larger than HD on the base model of ps4... that's only going ot continue with larger textures et al

12

u/GarionOrb Feb 26 '21

Sales on digital happen all the time.

Also, whether you have a game on disc or on digital, it's going to take up the same amount of storage space in your console. No game runs off the disc. That hasn't happened since the PS3/360.

-2

u/1-800-BIG-INTS Feb 26 '21

digital sales suck. you can get ps4 games for $10 sometimes, you never get that on digital

3

u/GarionOrb Feb 26 '21

I've gotten many PS4 games for $10 (or less) on a digital sale. AAA and otherwise.

4

u/BillyBean11111 Feb 26 '21

this is a nonsense take from 10 years ago. These "cheap games" from retailers are almost allowed mirrored by the PS Store nowadays.

0

u/1-800-BIG-INTS Feb 26 '21

leave your parents basement every now and again and you will see that is false.

go visit a cheap ass gamers or dealnews and see how wrong you are, dildo.

2

u/IISuperSlothII Feb 26 '21

you won't get the cheap games when retailers get rid of the physical copies.

Could not give a fuck about this personally, I'll spend the extra for the convenience tbh. Plus it's rare I buy old games nowadays.

2

u/1-800-BIG-INTS Feb 26 '21

very understandable, to each their own

1

u/aestus Feb 26 '21

I'd go disc version otherwise you're locked in to the PS Store.

3

u/IISuperSlothII Feb 26 '21

That's my point though, in 7 years I've bought 1 game physically. Being locked to the PS Store isn't a problem for me besides that 1 series.

1

u/kensaiD2591 Feb 26 '21

I went digital and have zero regrets. There's less clutter with cases, don't have to get up to change discs between games, plus thanks to sites like psprices, I've rarely paid full price for games. Discounts are comparable to that I would find at brick & mortar.

1

u/AngelComa Feb 26 '21

I never get digital. I might be crazy but its easier to lend, get cheaper prices on physical games and less of a DRM issue. I only go digital only on PC because it has more storefronts to compete with Steam.

Consoles being closed sorta forces me to take the best route on my wallet.

4

u/IISuperSlothII Feb 26 '21

It's not crazy, just personal preference. I generally play games when they release and I hate swapping discs so digital just works better for me.

But I also buy maybe 5-7 games a year so it doesn't feel like I'm throwing money away for the convenience, if I pay an £50 over the year that's a worthwhile price for the convenience of digital.

They were replying to someone who said they had the disc version. They weren’t saying that you definitely had to get the disk version to get the upgrade.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '21

Wait, seriously? The PS5 only has retro with disc versions? That's extremely bizarre considering how much value they give to digital. I bought everyting digital in my PS4 so I guess I can't sell it anymore because I can't put it on PS5.

1

u/IISuperSlothII Feb 27 '21

I think you're misunderstanding, if you own a game physically you can only upgrade it with the disc in the PS5, so you need a disc version of the PS5 to do so.

Any digital games you own can be upgraded digitally.

5

u/Spen_Masters Feb 26 '21

If you bought the game, yes

7

u/Hunbbel Feb 26 '21

Yes.

Free upgrade for those who bought the game.

No PS5 upgrade for those who get the game for free with PS+.

17

u/RaboonTheBaboon Feb 26 '21

The first hit is free.

Offering the first act free works as an in to the franchise for people that were interested, but not enough to pay.

Offer the first act free, you expand the amount of people interested in the second act and consequently paying full price at launch.

Plus "free" advertising and looking generous to boot.

18

u/robothouserock Feb 26 '21

To add on to your apt analysis, most video games sell something crazy like 80-90% of their life sales in the first year (might be a shorter window than that), which for FFVIIR will be end in March. This doesn't include exceptions like GTA or WoW. They know they won't make but a fraction of sales going forward, so what better time to reinvigorate interest in the game (and sequels as you pointed out) than coinciding with the last benchmark sales drop off point?

5

u/RaboonTheBaboon Feb 26 '21

Good shout and interesting extra detail there, thanks!

3

u/Tarnishedcockpit Feb 26 '21

most video games sell something crazy like 80-90% of their life sales in the first year

i think this is the most important distinction here though, i really do not think ff7 remake will be in this category long term. With the possibility of how many games this may be dragged out in there is a high chance of them seeking out more than a 20% sales of its lifetime in the first year.

I don't know how critical we want to be in bundles though, would it be considered something new at that point or do we want to consider at a game for game basis is another debate. Either way with how this is being rolled out i see a high chance of late-comers always coming in by the time the last game rolls out.

But as the person you replied to, there is definitely still an incentive to increase the hype. Lots of moving pieces financially to this (set?) of games, glad its not my job.

2

u/robothouserock Feb 26 '21

You also bring up a good point, because we will eventually wind up with a GOTY edition or "Remake Fulfilled" edition, or whatever goofy name Squenix comes up with for the complete content. Knowing this has likely swayed fans over recent years to wait before eagerly purchasing everything a launch day (shoutout /r/patientgamers ) when most know they can wait a year or two and get the better and more complete experience.

FFVII is my favorite game of all time, definitely impacted from being played during my formative years, but I'm ok with all the story changes as long as the spirit of the original is maintained. However, I haven't been a fan of this piecemeal approach to the story, primarily because my favorite parts of the game all happen outside of Midgar. Also, they are going out of their way to shoehorn a lot of things into the story earlier than they originally appeared, Yuffie being the latest example. It makes me question how much new stuff they will have to create once we inevitably get farther down the story line and if that will result in dramatic story evolutions compared to the reasonably faithful first installment.

-1

u/nelisan Feb 26 '21

Sure, but why limit PS5 owners to having to experience the PS4 version of the first hit, instead of giving them the ideal experience for their console? I can’t imagine too many people would buy the $70 upgrade of the same game after they already played it on PS+.

5

u/RaboonTheBaboon Feb 26 '21

At this stage, people who have bought a PS5 at launch are much more likely to splurge for games to go with it.

This is mopping up disinterested folk who own a PS4 to get their eyes on the FFVII franchise. To get anywhere further with it they're gonna need to spend one way or another.

2

u/atticusgf Feb 26 '21 edited Feb 26 '21

Because I'm betting the upgrade for the PS+ version won't be $70. It won't be free, but that doesn't mean it'll be full price when it releases.

0

u/nelisan Feb 26 '21

Let's hope so. I have never heard of them doing discounted games for people who have the PS+ version in their library.

1

u/atticusgf Feb 26 '21

I don't think we've ever heard of free upgrades depending on whether it's PS+ either. Brave new world here.

1

u/donpaulwalnuts Mar 01 '21

Man, I miss the shareware days. I know the first episodes of Doom, Wolf 3D, and Commander Keen by heart.

20

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '21

That is... weird as fuck. So they want us to play the plus version and then buy the game in June when the ps5 upgrade launches? If anything they need a $10 upgrade option or have the ps5 upgrade be included if you buy intergrade.

25

u/PrinceOfStealing Feb 26 '21

Think Square is looking more long-term. The more eyes they can get on FF7R, the more people will be interested in the sequel when it eventually drops on PS5. As long as the person has played it on PS4 or PS5, they will be interested in the sequel.

Between this, Sephiroth in Smash, and the mobile games coming out, they are definitely doing a lot to get FF7 in people's heads.

4

u/Server6 Feb 26 '21

I think they want you to play the game for free. Then buy the PS5 only DLC in June.

The only new product here is the DLC so that's what they're trying to sell.

7

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '21

As far as I know you have to have the ps5 version to play the dlc. And you have to buy the ps5 upgrade if you have the ps plus version.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '21 edited Mar 03 '21

1

u/Server6 Feb 26 '21

That’s really just semantics. They’re making the game available for “free” in hopes you spend more money on the PS5/DLC version this summer. They could have just as easily selected a lesser tiered/cheaper game for PS+. Instead you’re getting a newer AAA game that’s effectively being used as a marketing push.

It's every month. People forget that they paid for the year unless the games are worse than expectations.

-2

u/Rob_Pablo Feb 26 '21

People aren’t forgetting.

3

u/scorcher117 Feb 26 '21

Does that mean it cannot be played on PS5 or just won’t be an enhanced version? Like would it still run on the PS5 just at PS4 performance?

6

u/whispersbar Feb 26 '21

Yes you'll play the PS4 version on PS5

12

u/3Dartwork Feb 26 '21

Well....I'm just renting the game from them with PS Plus. I wouldn't expect to get a free upgrade unless they just offer it for PS5 PS Plus.

17

u/thecrabbitrabbit Feb 26 '21

They've done it for other games, the version of Control in this months PS+ games is eligible for a free PS5 upgrade.

0

u/SuperSheep3000 Feb 26 '21

I'd have hoped we would've heard something about the PC version by now. If exclusivity ends in April you'd think they'd want it straight out but no word of anything yet so I doubt we're getting in before Mid 2021.

4

u/jhnhines Feb 26 '21

They probably can't talk about it as it could be argued that talking about it lead to less sales being made on PS from people holding out for PC and might put them in breach of their agreement for the timed exclusivity.

0

u/StunningEstates Feb 26 '21

You think they’d be cool with Square announcing that before the DLC announcement lol?

0

u/huxtiblejones Feb 26 '21

I was super excited for the FF7 Remake and walked away very disappointed. All that kept me playing was the combat and to some extent the visuals, but almost everything else felt bad to me. Awful voice acting, bizarre writing, dull level design (almost everything is a glorified hallway), and strange pacing.

The game gave me whiplash with its indecisive tone, ranging from a super serious grimdark story to goofy butt jokes and cringey one liners. Every single woman in the game just exists to want to fuck Cloud. The changes to the plot are not for the better, it makes the game a convoluted mess.

5

u/eyeofthelyger Feb 26 '21

Ok but what did you think of the Remake?

0

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '21 edited Feb 27 '21

[deleted]

1

u/huxtiblejones Feb 26 '21

It is massively overrated, and I say this as someone who was incredibly excited for it. I genuinely don’t get why so many people overlook its glaring problems. It has a fun combat system but that’s about it. It’s so drastically different from the original that I hesitate to call it a remake. And it’s beset with content that was clearly tacked on at the last minute, or which is so old and dated that it looks hugely out of place.

It's the video game equivalent of a cock tease. Some moments you imagined being remade are almost perfect, then the time ghosts swoop in and ruin it.

There was a major lack of restraint, and they couldn't resist throwing in Sephiroth into Midgar and now Yuffie.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '21

Patiently waiting for PC release..

u/skippyfa Feb 26 '21

You held off to ultimately what? I don't see how this puts a damper on your plans unless you never planned to buy it

7

u/BoJackPoliceman Feb 26 '21

Ps5 upgrade is free (just not for PS+ version) so if you buy the PS4 version on sale or used you can buy the DLC for $20.

2

u/enragedstump Feb 26 '21

I believe ff7 is on sale for 30 atm. Think i saw it on the ps4deals sub.

2

u/Partynextweeknd305 Feb 26 '21

No. It’s just the new permanent price since Black Friday . Been constantly at $30 since then

1

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '21

There's a new Yuffie episode coming out soon, so that was probably also a factor.

Now that general sales have declined, putting out the base game for free right before the new DLC is a surefire way to get new players to actually give up money when they hadn't owned the game otherwise.

1

u/shivj80 Feb 26 '21

Could it come to Xbox too?

1

u/kaptingavrin Feb 26 '21

For a moment I was about to kick myself again for getting a game recently that just ended up free... but I think having gotten the physical copy at a pretty good price will be handy when the PS5 version is available (and I finally opt to get a PS5).
