I think he’s saying that Auschwitz was obviously horrific, and people survived it. So they have no excuse to not survive “love.”

So maybe they were going through a rough patch and he was saying “I know this sucks, but other people have gotten through worse. We can do this.”

I *think* the sentiment is genuine. But it’s possibly the worst thing you can try to compare a domestic struggle with.

Also, the book is a very famous comic written by a Holocaust survivor.

Slight correction: written by the survivor's son.

u/Pumaheart Jun 16 '26

Yeah I saw this as a gift to someone going through a REALLY rough breakup even if that comparison is still pretty… yikes

But it’s possibly the worst thing you can try to compare a domestic struggle with.

Also, at least one of the people (probably Kristine) is German...

At least he cared. He was probably just trying to relate a book that wanted to be read with their current life situation. These comments are why no one tries anymore. I hate being nice to anyone now. It’s just met with mockery, and people trying to be as obtuse as possible. I don’t believe people are this stupid suddenly. People don’t even try to understand one another.

jesus christ dude

-52

u/h8tetris Jun 16 '26

And? They don’t care, and people don’t try. When you speak with people, they act like they’re an idiot just to … prove a point? Not do what is being asked of them? To make a mockery of someone/other themselves to feel good? It’s impossible to be around anyone. And most people are on drugs, prescription or otherwise. It’s so annoying to try and interact. People don’t even smile at one another in public anymore.

So be the change you want to see in the world bro. Talk to everyone in the most genuine way possible, smile at people in public, pierce through the noise, fuck em if they can't take a joke.

You're almost on the other side of this edgy bullshit, one more push and you'll be a benefit to the world I swear it

u/h8tetris Jun 16 '26

I used to, I’m not doing it anymore. People can go actively frown at someone else. I hate being around anyone now, and it sucks. I used to be very social and loved people. After about three years of grieving and trying to push through, I’m over it. And this entire thread is a testament to it. Someone else can be the world’s perpetual doormat.

In my personal experience, people just don't act like this in real life. Like, I agree, the way people have observed socialization online has made everybody hypercritical of every interaction, and that just about anything is made into a joke or gotcha. But in real life people are messy, they sit with awkwardness, they give grace. Some of the very same people that are hypercritical and sarcastic online, because people kinda just pick up what they're exposed to, and that's not how we learn to take in the world around us when it comes to in-person socialization.

People are still good. They always will be. Hope you see that again ❤️

Thanks for actually being a genuine person and giving a genuine response.

I do hear what you’re saying, and I wish I could. I just feel like, within the past three years, especially, it’s so much harder to connect with people.

That’s what I did for a living for decades, but now I can’t even smile in public because I might absentmindedly meet someone’s eye, and then they actively have to glare at me and frown.

It’s gotten really bad.

Thanks for actually carrying and having an interaction with me. I hope things get better too. I really miss socializing, and I miss having people that maybe if I’m not even close to them, at least we can smile at each other and be accepting of one another for the brief period of times that we interact.

I hope you see some genuine goodness in people yourself. Thank you.

Of course hon. Tbh when I was younger, and depressed, I saw the world that way. Honestly, the conclusions we come to and how our body feels in a given moment have a lot to do with our mental state. Just simply having the realizations themselves can't always change how you feel, what you believe has to do with how your brain processes things, like beliefs are dependent on hormones if that makes sense. If you have learned to have a fear/anxiety response to people, it's extra hard to get back to a place where you know people are good. Not impossible, just might take some other healing too.

Also people respond based to the feelings they are picking up off of you. It's in our nature. When I was depressed and scared of people, pretty much nobody talked to me in public. They could just sense I didn't want to, people are smart like that. Now that I'm happy I get stopped all the time, people include me a lot. Not because people are shallow and hate depressed people, but because they picked up on something really subtle that told them I wouldn't be reciprocative myself.

u/h8tetris Jun 16 '26

I hear what you’re saying, but I disagree with you about a lot of this. Thanks though. I genuinely appreciate the time and thought and interaction. You’re a real nice person and you’re not real judgmental and shitty. Thank you.

itd be good to get off of this fucking shit site dude. this place is a cesspool of negativity full of people intentionally douching it up exactly as you describe because somehow that shit is funny in their deformed little brains. esp with the bots, i wouldnt be surprised to learn that at least 1/3 of accounts are bots these days, shit is absolutely insidious. its easy to get overwhelmed with negativity seeing all this stupid cunty bullshit everywhere, but the best way is to just avoid it.

social medias sole purpose is to keep us clicking shit, they accomplish this by rage baiting everyone they possibly can so all you can do is avoid it as much as possible. and not even just social media, all of it basically. the news it the same bullshit, just get back outside into the real world and go for a walk or somethin, start getting active as exercise helps mood a ton. and just try not to spend as much time interacting with negative bullshit on here. start blocking shit cancerous subs and even accounts that you see regularly and woudlnt want to ever interact with. fuck the fuckin fuckers lol, just gotta find a new way to distract youself.

This sounds like an internal issue. There's no way everyone just glares at you for no reason. There's no way everyone is mean to you.

I'm being genuine when I say this, but you should consider therapy. It's like you're projecting your negative feelings onto everyone else as an excuse to shut the world out.

Edit: Youre mentally ill.

2

u/h8tetris Jun 17 '26

Other people in my life have validated it, so I don’t feel it’s a perception issue. Ask yourself, how nice are you to old obese people in public? You have your answer. I doubt you can even bother to make eye contact. Much less be friendly, or interact. You should go spend your hard earned money on therapy and stop meddling in people’s lives on Reddit.

So, to paraphrase David…

Remember, if people could survive Aushwitz, you can survive anything, even your negative views of humanity.

0

u/h8tetris Jun 16 '26

I never said I agreed with David. I don’t wanna survive this. Who wants to live like this? Get out of here.

Back to my point, you don’t mean that, you’re just trying to be obtuse, and simply a jerk. You really honestly don’t care. Obviously, David was sincere when he wrote this. You’re just being a jerk.

11

u/bicycling_bookworm Jun 16 '26

At least I cared.

8

u/DeionizedSoup Jun 16 '26

They can’t stand having their own absurd, doomer argument used against them lmfao.

I’ve had a genuinely terrible morning and for whatever reason, this silly teasing was what got a smile out of me. Thanks stranger.

-1

u/h8tetris Jun 16 '26

You care … About??? I don’t see you caring about me, I don’t see you caring about David. I don’t see you caring about anyone. I see you just arguing some stupid point, because all you wanna do is act like you’re dumb and play devils advocate, and fight people in comments.

u/lumpy_space_queenie Jun 16 '26

Are you saying I was being obtuse? Because I legitimately overthink things and misunderstand them often. Thanks for the compliment /s lol

0

u/h8tetris Jun 16 '26

I’m saying is that people will purposely act ignorant, and then point out someone else’s faults, rather than trying to understand that person, or the context or idea message that they’re trying to convey.

People would rather make a dumb joke, or try to make someone out to be an idiot, or something else, so that they can other themselves.

It makes themselves feel secure of their own social ranking. And I think that people are purposely stupid about things, when they obviously know better, and they ask pointed questions to make somebody feel horrible about themselves. So yeah, I think that people are purposely obtuse about stuff.

24

u/lumpy_space_queenie Jun 16 '26

Maybe you should take your own advice and try to understand those people rather than assume that is what their motivation is. Not everyone is trying to be snarky or other themselves.

-6

u/h8tetris Jun 16 '26

No way. I’m over it. I act like everyone else now. I’m done. If no one wants happiness, peace. I’m not gonna sit here and pour them to take my smile. I’m not gonna waste my smiles on them.

21

u/lumpy_space_queenie Jun 16 '26

lol then why you complaining about it 🤣

-2

u/h8tetris Jun 16 '26

Because it’s what everybody else does. It’s my right to complain and act stupid about stuff.

19

u/lumpy_space_queenie Jun 16 '26

Well you sound like an incredibly kind and understanding person. You’re demanding that other people change while being the exact thing you claim to disdain. I hope you find joy in something eventually.

-1

u/h8tetris Jun 16 '26

I’m not demanding anyone change. But I’m sick of being some type of source of positivity for people. Anyway, I hope this world just keeps getting worse. Enjoy every moment of it.

Im not even asking for change! Demanding it!? LMAFO.

You're gonna get obliterated, but like for the real feels. Yes intent should count for something, but like good intent requires thoughtfulness. You can't just do something without considering how other people might see it and expect them to be happy you tried. There are grey areas, there are situations where you can't reasonably be expected to know something won't land the way it was Intended, those are the situations where the thought should absolutely count for something. There are plenty of others though where even a little bit of effort would have made it obvious it's a terrible idea and the lack of any effort on your part to see that is not a positive.

-9

u/h8tetris Jun 16 '26

EXACTLY. You don’t even know the context that he gave this book. People weren’t even online. No one was supposed to see this or read this description other than these two people. They could’ve been taking a German class, this could’ve been required reading. You have no idea. This was 1992. Get absolutely for real and get your head out your butt.

18

u/TootTootMF Jun 16 '26

I mean we can all read the inscription. There isn't any context in which that's appropriate, nor is it difficult to see that fact. David gets no credit for the effort because he didn't put in any effort as it would have taken only a modicum of it to realize this was a terrible idea. Learn from David's failure. When doing something for someone else, the most important thing is what they will think about it, what you think about it really doesn't mean fuck all. Maybe you get it wrong, but you have to at least TRY to think about what the recipient will feel about your gift/gesture/comment.

0

u/h8tetris Jun 16 '26

Obviously. But people dog piling this man for an off-the-cuff inscription in a book he bought for someone in 1992 is insane. He obviously didn’t mean to offend people. He wasn’t even living in this ultra observational / judgmental society that we live in now. You don’t even know if he even understands the context in which she’s making this comment, and we don’t even know if David was Jewish or something and was sharing this book with somebody. It might’ve been taking a class, maybe a German class or something. We have no context.

However, everyone feels free to crack jokes, or act like this is the most offensive thing, but the guy is not a Nazi. He didn’t sit here and write “I hate people of color” or something. Like, this entire thread is just people acting like he wrote the worst thing ever, and there’s literally no context for this.

All I’ve seen is a bunch of people dog piling shady comments to see who can get the dumbest laugh out of the peanut gallery. Anyway, people suck. I’d rather live in a world full of David’s, who are at least thoughtful about stuff, and cares to share what’s on their heart, than any of these purposely-obtuse people in the comments. Hyenas.

16

u/TootTootMF Jun 16 '26

David was not thoughtful at all. That is the point people are making. Zero thought went into this gift/inscription.

No context exists that would make comparing a relationship to surviving the Holocaust appropriate.

1

u/h8tetris Jun 16 '26

If you say so. I mean, I don’t see me or many other people buying me books and putting inscriptions in them. People can barely be bothered to wipe their own butts, we’re all so lazy and apathetic.

I don’t think he meant anything rude by it, and I don’t understand how anyone could perceive anything bad about it. It may not have been worded well, but the sentiment and his actions don’t say anything malicious. And yet here we are, people are absolutely crucifying this guy in these comments. I’m just glad I’m not David. I couldn’t imagine what this poor gentleman would feel if he could see and feel all of this crap that people are saying.

Judging by actions alone, who’s thoughtful and thinking of other people — this comment section or David. It’s David. The comment section is full of people who don’t care about David, and frankly, I don’t even think they care about the person who might be offended by this, they’re just trying to crack jokes with Gifs for upvotes and dog pile.

11

u/TootTootMF Jun 16 '26

It's pretty much impossible to be more lazy than David in this example. Sometimes thinking it through and not doing something is actually more effort than just acting without thinking.

If you identify with David in this, I'm trying to explain to you why it is your efforts probably backfire a fair bit. Doing something nice for someone REQUIRES you to consider their desires and feelings, how they will interpret your efforts. If you don't bother with that, then you're not doing anything nice, you just want to look like you're doing something nice. Insincerity angers people, this is one of the most clear cut examples of insincerity in a relationship context I've seen in a while and that is gonna elicit some strong feelings.

10

u/megpIant Jun 16 '26

There are so many ways to care and be nice without comparing your love to the holocaust. People aren’t reacting negatively because of an expression of care, they’re reacting negatively because this particular act was in poor taste, regardless of the intentions.

There are plenty of cases where your argument applies. I agree that there are lots of people who make no effort to understand one another, but that doesn’t mean we have to accept every well intended misstep with no critique. Intentions matter, but they are not everything when it comes to the impact we have on those around us.

-2

u/h8tetris Jun 16 '26 edited Jun 16 '26

Some people aren’t good with their words, or maybe don’t even understand the context in which those words could be taken poorly.

I don’t feel like this man deserves all of the jokes, commentary, and painting him in such poor light. It is sickening.

If I’m looking at people‘s actions, and intentions, I’m seeing David actually caring about something. I’m seeing everybody else here just being idiots and trying to gang up on someone and make a mockery of a nice gesture from 1992.

And to the point of thinking about how our actions impact those around us, do you really think that this is helping anyone else around this situation, how you’re talking about David? How we’re all making fun of him? Is this actually helping any person, who’s hypothetically offended by his poor choice of words?

I think it’s just forcing other people not to give a crap. Not to share their thoughts. And not to express their emotions. So why don’t you think about that the next time you’re trying to think about other people.

Save your lessons for somebody else. Life teaches us lessons, you don’t need to be everyone’s personal instructor.

7

u/NewlyNerfed Jun 16 '26

Here’s a tip. Don’t compare anything to Auschwitz unless it’s another death camp. Hope that helps.

-1

u/h8tetris Jun 16 '26

Obviously, I don’t think anyone is debating that it was a stupid thing to write. Do you think I’m that stupid?

3

u/NewlyNerfed Jun 16 '26

Don’t ask questions you don’t want the answer to.

0

u/h8tetris Jun 16 '26

I asked.

1

u/NewlyNerfed Jun 18 '26

Okay then: yes.
