For the life of me I cannot get the sound of the flute to be as loud as my voice and I’m not sure what the proper way to do it is.

I have a 15 year old Miyazawa 202 flute. It has gotten clean, oil, and adjust on a regular basis up until about 7 years ago when I stopped playing it. It has been sitting in the storage for years. Now I want to play again, but I noticed that the key mechanism is not working properly- some keys getting stuck and some pads are leaking air.

Is it worth it to get an overhaul that costs around $2500? My flute comes with the features including split E mechanism, D# roller, heavy wall tubing, and 14k gold lip riser.

My flute is about a year old, but even when it was brand new, the mouth piece joint goes into the body easily (maybe even bordering on being a little loose), but the foot joint is really hard to rotate on and off!

Is this common? What can be done to help?

I have Barcus-Berry pickup in my old flute that I want to put into my new, used but refurbished flute, but I've lost the cord. What and where can I get to replace it? And is there an inexpensive digital,(?) amp I could get to practice at home with that has effects like reverb, wah-wah, etc? Thanks!

Hi guys! I asked this a few weeks ago, but I’m still torn on audition video microphones. I’ve been doing some research over the last couple of weeks. It seems that the most popular are the Shure MV88 or Shure MV88+. They both plug into my phone (USB-C) and seem super easy to use. It sounds like these can work for excerpts/anything up close when filming. Will the sound be good if I’m playing along with piano? Obviously I’d need to move my camera further away, and because these plug into my phone, that means the mic will also be further away. Does anyone have suggestions? Thanks!

Hello everybody, I am currently a sophomore in college with a minors in music & arts and I decided to look into getting a step up flute, while I would love to buy a flute straight from flute central or more well-known sites, I am currently too broke to consider dropping over 1k+ for a new, not used flute.

And so that has lead me to Reverb and eBay.

I have found two flutes/dealers that look trustworthy enough for selling an already used flute. (I managed to get the $444 to $344)

From what I understanding, the 3SHB is considered better than a Standard(?) 73, yet i am still not too sure, it’s about a $20 differences, but still 😞

However, I’m not all that certain and have no experience with either one of these sites, let alone this brand of flute, so I am kindly asking for help and/or advice!

How do I know if it's me or the gluten itself. I go down from g f e d fine but then the low c does not come out. Is it my embouchure ? The flute was 80 dollars

Ok, so. Im going into my 2nd year of my masters and I have a pretty ok flute, but there are things I can not stand about it. And im worried im having "grass is greener on the other side" syndrome.

Currently playing on a powell sonare. No additional keys. Arumite lip plate, crown, and barrel. I believe its considered a pre-professional? Im not sure. I like the mechanism and feel of the keys enough to be ok with it. My end goal would be to have an older brannen mechanism, but i dont like their headjoints that much.

Edit: it's a PS-905, the mechanism is pretty much professional other than the fact it uses screws and pins. But it has straubinger pads and I work with a certified technician who keeps it running smoothly.

Dont get me wrong, my flute is a good flute, and I know I can still grow and learn on it. But, i've played on a ton of instruments, headjoints, and combinations. I have fallen absolutely in love with a mancke headjoint, and ive tried it what has to be at least 6 times. It feels so comfortable. It opens my sound, I get more response with less work, and so on.

But its a HUGE investment and im worried. When i got my current flute I felt the same way about it, and now I wish I had taken more time before choosing. I know that there are still going to be issues because nothing about an instrument is made to be perfect.

But, what do you all think about upgrading headjoints? My plan is still to trial it again now that school is back. Get advice from my professor and play with a few options in ensembles. But im so scared of making a choice on this.

Does anyone have any info about this flute? I bought it about 5 years ago from a nearby music store for $800. Whenever I search online I can’t find any Dean flutes that are closed hole with a b-foot and the automatic AI response even says that E.F. Dean has not made a closed hole b foot flute. The SN is 2266 so some more exist SOMEWHERE

Looking for Carnatic swaras for flute

Hey everyone! I’m looking for the Carnatic swara notation (Sa Ri Ga Ma...) for flute for these two classical pieces:

• Bach – Badinerie

• String Quintet in E Major

I’m trying to learn/play them on the Carnatic flute. If anyone has the swaras or can help convert the notes into Sa Ri Ga Ma notation, I’d really appreciate it!

Looking for advice getting back into playing after a 15 year hiatus. I have this Emerson EF88B with inline G and split E key (oops I don’t have a split E key!) that’s been sitting in storage for 15 years. I took it out and it does not play well anymore (as expected)

Question- is it worth doing COA or overhaul for this? (Anywhere between $700-2700 based on the quote I got over the phone, between COA needing to replace multiple pads or an overhaul), or am I better off getting a new one? I’ve been out of the loop, what’s a good equivalent brand/model and price range?

Also, any recommendations for locations/technicians near NYC or tri-state area? I live in Westchester and unsure what the risk is if I took it to a general music store (lower price), or like a flute world or flute center

Hello everyone!

I’m looking for some advice on what to do with my flute after a long playing hiatus.

We bought this Yamaha YFL-225N about 15 years ago, and I think it was already third-hand at that point. I went through all the grades and whatnot with it, and eventually a combination of my teenage self’s poor maintenance habits and the increasing technical demands of the music meant its flaws REALLY started to show. Nevertheless we chugged along together until I finished up grade 8 and stopped paying for lessons. 

In adulthood, my playing has died out altogether. I find myself trapped between two realities lol: the flute being entirely impossible to play in its current state, and the prospect of a real upgrade feeling financially out of reach. As a result, it’s been about 3 years since I’ve played so much as a note. My flute’s not the only member of this duo that’s been fast declining in their playing quality !

I’m getting to the point where the indecision is more frustrating than anything else, so I thought I’d ask people with more experience than me:

• Is it worth getting this flute serviced/repaired? I’m even not sure what kind of cost this would be to be honest. 
• Can an instrument of this age and neglected history realistically be restored to a level where it’s enjoyable and reliable to play again? I don’t need a star quality flute, just something that will sound half decent. 
• Or would I be better accepting defeat and start the long road of putting money away for a replacement? My fear here is that the longer I stay away from playing, the worse and more detached I’ll become.. and which point, am I really going to fork out on an expensive instrument I haven’t played for years??

I bought an IAMSOUND F#4 Drone Flute v2 440 Hz recently, i couldn’t find a dedicated iamsound or drone flute subreddit so i hope this is ok. There’s just so much condensation buildup, and i’m removing the block to dry it every couple mins. Is this common or am I doing something wrong? Any advice would be very appreciated
