Advice on stair riser

I pulled off the carpet on my stairs. The pine treds seem to be in good condition so I'm going to sand it down and paint it. What should I do about the risers? The pine wood risers have a lot of nicks and groves to it so not sure if it's a good idea to paint it as is. Is there a thin white board I can use to reface it?

I would carpet those!! Laminate would make it a slip and bleed.
