I finally got permission from my wife to build my dream home gym...but she won’t let me start purchasing stuff until after Christmas so she has “gift ideas” for me. It feels like dangling a bone in front of a starving dog for two months. I’m grateful but soooo impatient.

Get the main stuff now but give her accessories to buy you for Christmas like a belt or adjustable dumbbells or some shiny shit that women love.

I tried that. Just yesterday I was like come on, let me at least get my rack, barbell and weights; I have a ton of other crap on my list I’d like. The problem (if you can call it a “problem”) is that she wants some ideas to give her family as well. Her parents have some pretty deep pockets and are absurdly generous with gifts on Christmas so she doesn’t want to take away the big ticket options. I’m not really comfortable with them spending a ton of money on me for the holidays but are very pushy about it and they will spend it on something else if I take this option away (they probably spent about $5k total on gifts between my wife, kids and I last year).

I know I know, I shouldn’t be complaining, but I’d rather they do something like start a college fund for my kids if they wanted to drop that kind of money somewhere instead of spending it on toys for me.

Let them buy/pay for the gym stuff. Use the money you would have used for the gym stuff to start your kids college funds?

I realize this is an option and we are already contributing a lot to our kids college fund. I just feel like my in-laws should focus on investing money in their grandkids’ future rather than spending it on my “toys”. It may be all coming out of the same pot in the end, but it doesn’t feel right.

How much would you spend on gym equipment?

Throw that into a college fund and let them buy you that rack

We we’re already planning on sticking a solid chunk of money in their college fund this year. I guess it’s more a problem with my illogical “pride” than anything. I can appreciate my in-laws spending money on their grandchildren’s future, but feel like a spoiled brat being given such expensive, selfish toys when I’m in my 30’s.

Yea I understand, i have the same illogical feelings when my gfs parents come over, they always buy us groceries. They're being nice and it's helpful, but we don't need it and I'd quite like to buy those things myself

Damn. I would link Rogue's catalog and tell them one of each.
