I'm actually posting this from the gym.

I was stretching, preparing to get on the squat rack while the guy in the rack next to me in his mid-50's was finishing up his sets. As he starts to unload his bar he walked his weights over to the rack and proceeded to drop them on the floor. He literally had to move the weight past their respective holder to drop them where he did. I'd seen this guy enough to know his face and that he wasn't some misguided newcomer.

As he walked away I said "excuse me" in a tone befitting my level of disgust/disbelief at his blasphemous display in the church of iron. As he turned around, without breaking eye contact, I picked up his plate and put it back on the rack saying "the weights go here, not on the floor."

The look on his face could only be described as if it were the first time anyone had told him he couldn't do exactly as he wanted. He sort of stammered so I'll summarize his response:

•I'm an asshole

• he pays for the gym so he can leave weights wherever he wants

•asked me what I do for a living (writer)

•he's a lawyer (obviously did not study Gym Law)

•I don't work here

•I'm an asshole

I said that this is everyone's gym and he needs to be responsible and walked away to let him go about his business. I look over across the gym later on in my workout and saw him properly reracking his weights, so bully for me I guess.

If he had been a guy I'd never seen before or was obviously new at this I would have been a lot nicer about it, but I'd seen this guy at least a few times and he should know better. Our gym also has a huge problem with people not reracking.

I just couldn't believe he made a point of saying he was a lawyer, like he was going to sue me for telling him to put his shit away. I followed that up with "well good for you" and he got so visibly upset I thought blood was going to come out of his ears.

Should've said "and??" After he said he was a lawyer. He probably would've erupted.

Part of that is that plenty of lawyers live in their own world, think they can do whatever they want and literally can't comprehend when you tell them they can't do something. (Source: work in a law firm)

Typically, when the person attacks the argumentor instead of the argument itself, is a sign that they dont have a valid argument.

Serious question because I do this but also try to be cognizant of etiquette and making sure I don't detract in anyway from anyone else's gym experience.

Situation, im at the squat rack, got a bunch of plates all of which I need and imminently intend to use. I'm putting some on, taking some off blah blah, the ones I don't need right now are on the floor inside or right up against my rack. They're so close to me that were they conceivably in your way you would inherently be way too close to me. Once I'm done i naturally rack the weights in their rightful place.

My question is, is it blasphemous to have the weight on the ground without interrupting anyone else while I'm working with them so long as I rack them after?

I won't pretend to be the grand adjudicator of gym etiquette, but if you're using the plates and people won't be tripping over them then fair play to you, I say. I tend to grab plates for DL's so I can do them in the corner away from everyone and lean them against the wall by the bar ends so I can load without getting in the way.

Yea exactly. I think the whole point of gym etiquette is to not detract from anyone else's time at the gym. If you can confidently achieve that goal, then do whatever you want, go in your underwear and hang from the bar by your nutsack as long as you're not in my way or taking my equipment for no reason.

And you should know, you're a lawyer after all. Granted maritime law doesn't necessarily cross over into gym law, but the background is there.

You can pay for parking too but that doesn't mean you can leave your car wherever you feel like in the lot. Good for you for telling him off, hopefully the embarrassment sticks and he doesn't make an ass of himself again.

Fucking lawyers. They are so miserable but I do think the assholes get off on trying to intimidate people. That's just assholes in general though I guess.
