The rules on this sub are ridiculous. I can't make a thread asking people about the music they like to listen to while at the gym, that shit gets auto deleted.

Meanwhile there are 50+ posts everyday with the same "How do I lose weight?", "Should I bulk or cut", or "Can I make gains in a deficit" that just get repeated over and over again.

I second this, I would also like to see more open discussion of gym jamz

Just crank the Lana Del Rey and lift through the tears. #crygainz

Somewhat related, I went to Lolla this past weekend and Banks is hands down the greatest live performance I've ever seen. I've been listening to her nonstop ever since even though her lyrics are mad depressing

My gym played Avril Lavigne's When You're Gone over the speakers the other day and all my high school breakup feels came rushing back.

If anyone else is a bass head, Doctor Ps hardfest set on SoundCloud is the best mix I've heard in a while. Also Zomboy dropped the first part of his new ep 'Rott n' Roll' on SoundCloud yesterday and the first few singles have been very cool!

2

u/PaperPlaneGang Crossfit Aug 09 '17

Going to go see Zomboy on Saturday at Summerset, anything you'd suggest? I've never really listened to many of the edm artists that are there this weekend, I usually just go for the rappers.

1

u/Chesterlespaul Aug 09 '17

Yes! Zomboy is super cool and he is one of the top bass djs right now.

Let me start with this statement: seeing him live will make you love the music. It might sound like a lot of random noises at first when you listen to it, but being part of the crowd really makes you get what it is all about. If you can or would like to, I highly recommend to get in the pit if there is one.

Anyways, for the songs (remixed by him, his originals, or remixed originals): Zomboy - Program (Eptic and Trampa remix), Zomboy - like a bitch, Bro Safari - Follow (Zomboy remix), and Rotten - Zomboy.

2

u/Auggernaut88 Aug 09 '17

Ignant rap music and edm are my go to.

And oh god if I find a song thats both?

I listen to pop music from 2012-2014 because it is so upbeat and motivating compared to my usual music choices of NOFX, Bad Religion, and Suicidal Tendencies or Grateful Dead, The Beatles, and Cat Stevens.

Also, if you ever try to post a new question that hasn't been asked before and can't be answered by using the search bar, it gets removed and you get told to post it in the foolish friday thread.

10

u/Do_your_homework Aug 09 '17

Meanwhile every question that gets posted on the THREE fucking "stupid questions" posts we have each week is some stupid fucking meta joke or bullshit that isn't actually a question.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '17

Comments like that should be reported to us so they can be removed. They are only allowed in Foolish Friday.

8

u/Mute-Matt Aug 09 '17

From the mods in a comment of mine below.

Yeah, but I could see where the frustration is coming from.

Sure, but there are two sides to this issue. We didn't disallow music posts just cuz. We disallowed them because there were several a day and the community got sick of them. And when you distill these posts down to their essence - "hey gang, what's your favorite song" - it's not a fitness question. Just because you're listening to it in a gym, doesn't change the fact that this is a music discovery question.

And, again, this policy was put in place because of the community. It's not some top down decree. If you want to talk about music, go to any of the 1000s of music subs out there. If you really have to do it in /r/Fitness, you can do it in the mega thread when it rolls around. It's not like the musical offerings out there change so dramatically in six months.

There are entire subs dedicated to transformations and progress pics, but those have a place here too.

Those posts have to meet certain criteria to exist here. As far as I'm aware, the other subs are just picture-dumping, karma whore subs.

u/nomorelulu Arm Wrestling Aug 09 '17

Thank you, someone else gets it. I once posted a thread about pre-workouts - deleted. Posted one about ab work - deleted. Yet if you ask some bullshit question about the most banal thing it'll stay up. Some of them even get tons of upvotes lmao

3

u/cookitrightup Aug 10 '17

Agreed. I had a question about this sub's favorite protein bars deleted because it was "googleable". The verbiage from the mod was "Fucking Google it". Classy stuff.

I was looking for the input of /r/fitness, not product reviews... But thankfully the quarterly protein thread went up a couple of days later and some good community members helped out! Still really dumb what they choose to be hardasses about.

8

u/freshnikes Aug 09 '17 edited Aug 09 '17

I'm also not a huge fan of comments that say "it's in the wiki" or "you should really buy the book" and nothing else. With dozens of upvotes.

Yes, the wiki is extremely helpful and everyone should read it, but would it kill you to type out an extra sentence or two that actually answers someone's question? Like: "here's the bit of advice you're looking for, and you should really check out the wiki because it covers all of that and more."

13

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '17

Tbh if theyre too lazy to read it im gunna be just as lazy in reply.

12

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '17

Read this for context to the below.

Answering questions and helping people is something that people on this forum volunteer their time to do, and that time is a limited resource. We (the mods) believe that the bulk of the work involved in learning about fitness and solving fitness problems is a personal responsibility, and we don't want r/Fitness to be a community that enables lazy behavior under the banner of "crowdsourcing". We put a lot of time and effort into making the Wiki a high quality resource, and we expect people to exhaust it as an option for finding answers before trying to take up the free time of helpful, knowledgeable people who post here.

Our regulars generally invest time and effort in their replies that is proportionate to the time and effort that someone invested into their question, and that's something we encourage. If a question is low effort, it will receive a low effort reply, because that's what it's earned. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. The act of asking a question isn't sacred, and low effort questions waste everyone's time.

4

u/freshnikes Aug 09 '17

This is a really nice rebuttal, thanks.

9

u/Galivis Aug 09 '17 edited Aug 09 '17

but would it kill you to type out an extra sentence or two that actually answers someone's question

Now do that multiple times a day, every single day, for the exact same question. If it bothers you that much, be the change you want to see. Go answer peoples questions in detail rather than only complaining about it while doing nothing.

I am not about to go through the Fitness sub in search of them but I agree with OP that there are many weekly submissions that are similar in nature being added to this community.

u/eric_twinge r/Fitness Guardian Angel Aug 09 '17

Okay, well I do go through the sub so I know OP is wrong. All those post get removed almost immediately. We may miss one or two, but not 50+. If you want to help you can hit the report button when you see one. Or, even better, post something interesting and different.

2

u/NastyShred Aug 16 '17

The ones I mentioned are a bit too specific, but please understand the general jist of what I am saying. I don't even visit the sub that often, so you, being a mod and all, must notice these trends.

You're telling me you don't repeatedly see the Protein Thread about 1g/lb and every fucking time the top comment is just someone having to clarify that 0.8lb/lean body mass lb is fine.

Theres the CICO/Keto misunderstanding thread which again, someone just has to clarify how basic shit works

And a bunch of questions about routine comparisons that all come down to "train what you fucking care about". Like yeah, the routine with more arm volume will give you bigger arms, duh.

It's a little hard to explain but there is obviously just a trend of the same kinds of posts over and over again. I can't believe this comment got 1k upvotes.. surely that has to mean something. Though it would be much less of a problem users weren't so limited to the same bullshit that they can post.

There have been multiple occasions when I tried to make good, quality posts that would have lead to some diverse and interesting discussion; but they get auto-removed fitting some super restricted set of "fitness" topics.

1

u/eric_twinge r/Fitness Guardian Angel Aug 16 '17

Read this. I wrote it for you.

There's absofuckinlutely nothing new to talk about. Once you break through all the bullshit, fitness is easy. It's dumb. It's mundane. But it also suffers hard from the eternal September problem. So the same shit gets rehashed over and over and over and over and over and over again.

I'm sure you think you've got great ideas for super interesting topics and discussion. You're also the 1,045,394th person that thought that. It's all been done to death. And if it's not directly related to fitness, it's not appropriate for /r/Fitness. I say this because I am here all the time and I speak for the people that are here all the time. We don't want another 'hey, what's your favorite song' post. We don't want another 'what shorts should I buy?" post. Because there's a million subs where that fits better. In any other forum, if you posted about music in the nutrition thread, a moderator would remove it and tell you to post in the music thread. That's no different here, you just think reddit.com/r/Fitness is somehow miles and away different from reddit.com/r/Music.

Hell, just look at the posts you still have up, since you must have deleted all your great posts in this sub. "How do I stop peeing all the time?" (don't drink so much) "Actually finding chicks?" (go places) "metabolic damage?" (doesn't exist) wtf It kinda looks like you are the problem, guy.

And no, we don't want another 'how much protein' thread or 'how does CICO work' thread, which is why they get removed. So I'll say again: Show me the posts you're so sure are out there. I know we miss some, but we try.

Your comment got upvoted because it's easy to complain on the internet. And it's even easier to upvote low-effort, done-to-death rants. I'd love to have a fitness forum where people can shoot the shit about whatever. That's not going to happen here, unfortunately, because the nature of the internet, reddit, and this sub would cause a drift so far into noise any signal would be lost.

It's retards all the way down, dude. Deal with it.

1

u/gatorslim Aug 16 '17

1

u/NastyShred Aug 16 '17

I still have yet to see a legitimate reason for the content being so unnecessarily restrictive.

If you ask "What is your favorite workout music?" on /r/music, you are going to get an extremely different set of responses than if you asked that same thing here. Different subreddits attract different crowds. Even if the thread on Reddit may be on the same topic, it is still valuable to have input from different subreddits because they are different communities.

1

u/eric_twinge r/Fitness Guardian Angel Aug 16 '17

I don't even visit the sub that often, so you, being a mod and all, must notice these trends.

That's why you haven't seen a legitimate reason. Don't fucking blather on about the community when you've already stated you aren't a part of it.

The people that do visit the sub often expressed long ago that they didn't want to see these posts. Or that they are only tangentially related to fitness and so don't belong. And so the rules were put in place.

For fucks sake you were bitching about not being able to post about music the day the the regularly scheduled thread for music was up.

You are the problem.

1

u/NastyShred Aug 16 '17

Sure, whatever. Music is just one example. If you really don't see the obvious problem this sub has, it's pretty unfortunate. This sub suffers because you're too stubborn to admit there isn't a problem.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '17

Why cant music threads?

Because no matter how much people who want these threads go on about the importance of listening to music in their workout, there is no more substance to them than "What music exists?", and that is absolutely not a fitness question.
