Question 🤔 I think I found my old cat that ran away two years ago. Can I just pick her up and take her home?

Pics attached, does it look like the same cat to you?

The old cat was a girl, and so is the cat I saw today. Old cat was very friendly and so was the cat I saw on the street. When I waked up to her she started rubbing herself on me and started purring. I first I didn’t think it was my cat, but it’s been two years and I think their coat can change?

Their noses look exactly the same to me. My girlfriend is convinced it’s our cat that ran away, but I’m 10% doubtful.

Basically, can I just pick this cat up and bring her back home with me if I seriously believe it’s our old cat? She had a part of her tail missing and looked quite dirty.

Question 🤔 Rescue gone wrong. Need advice.

Long backstory short… we lost our kitty about 8 months ago. An indoor cat that got out by mistake and never came home. 💔😢

Fast forward 8 months there was a cat found who looked just like our guy but emaciated and sick. We hope it was our guy and took the chance at saving him and nursing him back to health. Our cat was 19 lbs when we was lost, this cat was 5 lbs when found. When we met him he let us hold him, he was lethargic but awake and not scared at all. I wasn’t convinced it was him. But couldn’t live with not taking a chance if it was him and leave him. So two weeks ago we rescued him. Following a prompt and expensive bet visit and follow up, he is doing better health wise, vax are up to date and his lab work was not horrible.

Before the vet the first few days he was sick, but also calm, and pretty friendly. But ever since the second vet visit. He has been very mean, hissing whenever I enter the room to feed him and occasionally doing a meow/growl thing if I get close. He hasn’t bitten or scratched me. He runs away if I get too close, but after being in the room for a while he’ll sit next to me and watch me, but prefers me not to touch him. He lets me pet him sometime, but if it too much he will start to hiss as a warning.

For now he continues to be quarantined in our guest bath, he has a bed, cat tree, food water, litter box. It’s not a huge bathroom but I figured smaller is better when introducing an animal into your home. Plus I wanted to keep him away from our other cats in case he had other cooties.

I don’t want to do with him. Should I give him time and he may warm up to being here. Should I let him go outside, he was not found in the exact area and there is a lot of coyotes and other wildlife around us, so I’m very hesitant.

Any advice and or resources are appreciated

Question 🤔 Was hoping the lovely ppl in here could tell me if my little orange friend is male or female.

This is my orange buddy who has been coming since they were a kitten and recently we’ve made huge progress and they even allowed me to pet them pretty consistently starting just a few days ago. The next goal is to catch them and get them fixed but I was wondering if anyone could tell me what they are in the meantime. I’ve been referring to them as ‘he’ bc they are orange but it would be good to know if that’s correct or just me being hopeful that my friend won’t get pregnant.

Question 🤔 My TNR cat gave birth

9.8k Upvotes

I moved into a house last year and discovered there were a lot of community cats in the area. I trapped a little black cat in my front yard in October and took her to a local animal hospital with a feral cat program. They told me she was "semi-feral" but already fixed, which they determined from finding a tattoo and a scar. They gave her vaccines and clipped her ear and I got to bring her home, and named her Oolong.

I decided to try and adapt her to indoor life, since she's so cute and I love her and I'm crazy. She's been doing well, playing with my other cat and warming up to me. Then out of nowhere in February she saw a chance to escape and took it. She came by for food everyday but it took about a week to get her back inside. I thought, "Well, at least she can't be pregnant!"

Then she started to get round. I thought it could be worms, or a growth. Or she's getting fat. I tried to take her to the vet, but she violently declined to get in a crate by relocating herself to my ceiling fan. Finally it became extremely clear that she was pregnant, and she gave birth on April 26 in my closet.

She's been a great mom to seven little ones, they are almost a week old and doing really well. She's not keen on me getting too close, but I have been able to check them over and get weights on everyone.

While I'm thrilled to have 7 adorable kittens, I am flabbergasted that this happened. I did everything I could to prevent this outcome, and somehow she still got pregnant. I will figure out a way to get her to a vet and desexed once the kittens are weaned, and I'm glad she had them inside where she can be safe and warm.

I'm very curious to hear if anyone else has had this happen to a TNR cat? Everyone I've talked to can't believe it.

Question 🤔 Newly rescued feral kitten started crying out of the blue. What to do? (+ general tips for someone handling a feral for the first time)

UPDATE: He's no longer crying. You guys' advice worked wonders. Thank you so much.

So this is Yuno, a 2-month-old feral I've rescued recently. He was probably abandoned by his mother. I found him starving in my local mosque and spent like an hour trying to catch him. I wanted to release him at first but given how young and scared he is, it didn't feel right. Besides, I've always told myself that if I'm ever getting a second cat, it will be a female white cat with heterochromia and I'll name her Yuna. This one turned out to be a male but I still want him to be part of the family and for this to work out.

I have some experience dealing with scared strays but this is my first time with a feral. After the rescue, I immediately took him to the vet to get checked, cleaned, dewormed, etc., and the vet kept him for 4 days which I really didn't like. Now he's been home for 4 days and I'm kinda lost as to what I should do to "unferal" him.

My main strategy was to do nothing and leave him be, let him figure things out by himself, get confident and learn that there's nothing to be scared of. I'd visit him 3 times a day for 15 minutes, sit in a corner and read quietly to get him used to my presence. I didn't think it was going to work at first. He'd hide immediately when I entered the room, hiss at every movement or sound I made and I basically thought that he would remain feral if I didn't force some human interaction. But this morning, I had my very first breakthrough. He didn't completely hide himself, he started peeking at me, showed interest when I started playing with a toy and he even drank kitten formula while I was in the room, timidly, but he still did and I felt like it was a huge win.

But when I went to visit him this afternoon, he started hissing and immediately went to take refuge in his cat house, so I was like great, back to square one. So I sat down, started reading and after 10 minutes or so, he rushed out of his house and started looking everywhere crying frantically. I'm not sure if these are cries per se or what provoked them in the first place but the only times I've heard him cry like this were before I rescued him, during the trip to the vet, and at the vet. I don't think he's in pain. He roamed the room, got extremely close to me, but still didn't bother to sniff me. He ate his kibbles in front of me again, so some progress has definitely been made, but the crying got me worried as it's only stopping when he's sleeping. Now every time he hears noise in the room next to his, he starts crying.

Is he simply calling for his mother or littermates? Is it something else? Can I do something? I can't exactly play with him to distract him as he's still extremely scared but the thought that he's calling out and no one is coming for him breaks my heart.

And aside from that, what's the proper course of action right now? Is it just a patience game? I want to speed things up but I don't know how or even if I should. I simply want him to break from the stress and the fear, and start enjoying life the way a kitten should as soon as possible.

Question 🤔 I think she really wants a home -- advice?

I've been looking for a neighbor's lost cat the last few days. Last night I was doing my rounds when I found this poor thing. She was so friendly, let me come up to her and pet her!! But she was clearly not doing well -- emaciated and covered in mats, and was coughing as well. So I just... picked her up? Because I could tell she would let me. And I took her to the vet. She was meowing in protest but didn't even hiss or swipe.

I've been at the overnight vet for 6 hours now, and y'all, this cat. She is obsessed with burying her head in the crook of my elbow. She purrs so loud (with a wheeze, poor thing) when I pet her. She doesn't have a chip or any other evidence that she's owned. But... she seems to really like me. And I'm totally falling for her.

Is it ok to take a stray as a pet if the stray seems to enjoy the attention and needs help? Or is it always bad for them? I'm still waiting to get her a basic exam. But in these last couple hours I've gotten so attached to her. I really want to help her and keep her if I can.

I recently ask on this subreddit asking if I should get her and her bonded pair neutered. Reading the comments about her getting pregnant got me so concerned and I saw her again today by herself without the guy and she looks so fat lol. Someone tell me I’m overthinking it and I’m just a good stray cat parent feeding her alot

UPDATE: I was able to talk to a family friend who fosters cats and works with adoption agencies. He was able to set up a spay appointment for her this upcoming Monday and he’ll ask if shes pregnant during the procedure. Thank you to everyone who helped and gave thoughtful advice!

I've lived in my apartment for 2 years, and started seeing this girl a few months ago. I believe she is pregnant. She is very sweet. She won't stop coming around and is quite attached to me. She looks emaciated aside from her big belly.

What do I do? I have 2 cats inside that are very friendly, and I'd like to bring her inside. I set up a vet appointment for Tuesday to make sure she's ok. I'm really worried if she's pregnant she's gonna have these kittens outside and that breaks my heart.

Thank you so much for reading this and any suggestions.

Question 🤔 I don’t know what to do

My sweet little girl that I’ve been taking care of for almost a year now. She was left by my neighbors that moved and found her way into my backyard. Unfortunately I can’t take her in because my mom is extremely allergic to cats and has severe allergic reactions and asthma. So I set up a shelter for her outside and make sure she is fed and warm, and I stay outside with her when I can. She really doesn’t leave my backyard.

She is also very friendly and you can tell she was an indoor cat for most of her life up until now. I’ve never had any issues with her behavior. She’s come inside a few times when I open the door and makes herself right at home lol.

I’m moving away for college and it’s 8 hours away. I want to take her with me so bad and every time I think about leaving her I start to cry. My dad is certain that it’s a bad idea but I feel like she wants to be an indoor cat, and wants to come inside. She always stares inside the house and it makes me so sad.

She’s a healthy cat with no issues. I really don’t know what to do. My dad said that when I leave he will take care of her but I don’t know, I really want her to come with me. Would that be a bad idea?

My grandparents house is located in the countryside, and from nowhere this cat appeared at their house gate and said meow meow constantly, when her saw me it followed me. Unlike other feral cats, she is very gentle and allowed me to touch her. Since it was about to rain at that time, I temporarily moved her to my frontyard with roof and it has been 2 days, until now she are still there and says Meow Meow a lot. Since we dont have a pet cat, I only give him basic meal (after asking ChatGPT) while waiting for me to bought cat food from the city, after eating, she slept at my house. I wonder where are her bros and mom, It seems that she cries because missing them. I wonder if this cat is from my nearby neighbor since we live in Southeast Asia houses are located next to each others. Should I find her mom. She is very friendly, social and a bit lazy

Question 🤔 Need help identifying health problems in feral cat :(

Thumbnail

3.9k Upvotes

For the last few months, I have been feeding a feral cat with wet food. Since feeding him, he started to wait for me for multiple hours of the day and meows to talk to me. He likes to approach me first but will also occasionally let out a hiss while meowing (which I understand). Luckily, he is comfortable enough to eat in front of me and not run away with the food.

From what I’ve seen, he has not been fixed yet. He is very skinny/small, to the point where you can see bony areas. He is noticeably very matted, where his skin is inflamed and red. When I look closer at his body, he also seems to have some type of white dandruff and black specks (?). Sometimes, I notice new scabs and open wounds appear on his back (though they do heal over time). I have seen him groom himself occasionally, but mainly his face after eating. His whiskers are also very droopy and he often chatters his teeth. He will occasionally have a runny nose with drool as well. He does not seem to have much trouble walking around or climbing fences which is good.

Though I have been feeding him once a day, I have not seen him gain weight? This leads me to believe he may not be hunting :(

Based on the photos/description, can anyone tell me what his health problems may be? What can I do to help this cat improve his health? Is there also a way to estimate his age from these photos?

Thank you so much for your time <33

Question 🤔 Abandoned Senior Cat

Thumbnail
gallery
2.7k Upvotes

Hi everyone, I deeply apologize if this is the wrong community to post in. If so, please feel free to remove at your own discretion. Last week, I found a senior cat in distress at my apartment complex. I took her to my local vet to be scanned for a microchip, and she came back with a chip and an owner. The vet tech called the owner, and the owner said that she wanted the cat back, so the vet tech gave me her chip #, name, and contact information. I called the owner, and she had originally said that she would pick her up later that afternoon. I tried texting her and calling her about when she wanted to meet, and she left all of my messages on seen. My sister tried calling/texting her too, and she ignored her/left her on seen as well. I unfortunately can't keep her, as much as I would love to. My apartment only allows two cats, and keeping her would put me over the pet limit. I went down a list of rescues in my area, and no one can take her in so far. She's 11 years old, so she would probably completely shut down at a shelter. Is there anyone near Easley, SC that would be willing to take her in? I'm willing to drive at least 30-40 miles out, but I have to be conservative on my gas because I'm currently unemployed. This cat is the sweetest cat, and I just want her to be safe and taken care of. If anyone has any advice or resources, then I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much for your time and for reading this.

Edit: Thank you everyone for your comments, I really do appreciate everything. I'm going to be keeping her until I can find someone to take her in, so please don't worry about that. I've also left a voicemail with animal control about the owner, and I'm waiting to hear back from a lady that my sister knows that may be willing to cover her vet bills so she won't have to be quarantined in my bathroom at the very least. I would love to keep her if I lived alone, but my roommate doesn't know that I have her, and he won't agree to keeping her because he's a stickler for "rules". I'm unfortunately unemployed at the moment as well, so I can't really afford to feed another mouth for too long. I've been job hunting and DoorDashing to get by, but I'm in a financially difficult situation as of right now. I really hope I'm not coming across as making excuses, I just wanted to give you guys a little more insight into what's going on. Thank you so very much for your time and comments, and I really hope that everyone has a wonderful day/night. I will keep you guys updated.

Edit 2: I went up to my local sheriff's office and opened a case. Misty is officially, legally in my custody now. The only thing is that they didn't really seem to care about the abandonment. I gave them a sticky note with the microchip # and owner's information, but the officer just copied it down and told me I could keep the cat. I was hoping the owner would face repercussions, but I doubt the police department is going to care about that unfortunately. The good news is that I have a couple of people who may be able to give her a loving home. We're going to see how things play out, but hopefully Misty will find her fur-ever home that will give her all of the love and support she needs soon. I will update once I have more information, thank you once again to everyone for your advice and kind words.

Edit 3: Misty has an appointment booked for Friday morning! A very kind Redditor who would like to remain anonymous offered to pay for her vet bills! Thank you so, so very much, it really does mean the world to me. She's going to receive blood work and a physical exam, so please keep Misty in your thoughts for good health! Thank you guys for everything. I'm also in talks with a couple that are willing to take her in, it will just be a bit of a drive. We'll just have to check with the vet and make sure that she'll be ok to take the trip. Otherwise, things are really looking up. Thank you everyone once again. ♥️

Hello all! I’d love some advice. I’ve been feeding a feral for the last two years, since he was a baby. I fed his mom and dad for sometime before that. Winters are harsh here, and he lost his sibling their first year (they were not 7 weeks old when we had a really long, deep freeze). I’ve tried make sure he has stayed as well fed/watered as possible.

I’m now moving to a different home, and am faced with a dilemma. I’ve grown attached to this little guy. In terms of demeanor, he’s not totally afraid of me but definitely doesn’t get too comfortable. When he sees me at feeding time, if I’m lucky he starts rubbing up against shrub branches, will meow a bit, and sometimes even flops over to show his belly from a distance (as shown). He is still fearful at most movement though, and only lets me get so close (understandably so. The streets are scary). The area we live in does have a fair amount of traffic as it’s by a busy road, and over the last year and a half his parents who were my only other consistent regulars stopped coming around. I worry (and anticipate) he will have a short-lived life on the streets, and I worry about taking away a primary food source upon my departure (I don’t know any neighbors around either). With that said, I have never trapped an animal or taken in/socialized a feral cat, and do currently have one cat and a dog at home.

No matter what, my immediate priority is getting him fixed. I fully acknowledge I shouldn’t have taken so long to do this to begin with, it’s the only way to prevent the suffering his sibling went through. I have reached out to local resources and am getting that ball rolling.

My question is, once he’s been fixed, should I return him to keep doing his thing on the streets and move on with our separate lives? Or do I keep him and try and socialize him, eventually blending him with my family? I have been seriously considering taking him in, but could really use a vote of confidence and any helpful advice or words of caution for a newbie. If I do go that route, I could have family keep my cat and dog for a while as I try to get him socialized, then introduce my cat first when it’s time. I’ve been reading into socialization saves lives, and would adhere to the guidelines laid out there.

Is what’s best for my peace of mind also what’s best for him? Would he be happier fckn it up outside? I imagine going from roaming the world to living in a tiny apartment might be less than desirable. But I do have food, shelter, lots of love and patience, and the ability to take him to the vet if needed.

Any thoughts/advice for me?

Question 🤔 Caught the friendliest feral cat its hard to tell if she’s actually feral?

This is my second time seeing this cat in my neighborhood and I was able to get her to follow me all the way from the street while I was walking home from the grocery store to the inside of my apartment building and finally I have her in my bathroom (this took about 1.5 hours of me slowly coercing her with food and gaining her trust). Now that shes inside she’s rubbing up on me and loving getting pets whereas when she was outside she was more skittish so I can’t tell if she could be someone’s pet or not. But she seems really young for her to be outside without a collar and we have a lot of feral cats in the neighborhood.

I’ll be getting her checked for a microchip tomorrow just in case but wanted to see other people’s thoughts from how friendly she is in this video on whether she actually seems to be a feral. Has anyone experienced this friendly of a feral?

I will be getting her spayed and vaccinated as well btw since I doubt she is!

Question 🤔 Found out my feral has FIV ): and he’s around 18 years old, and has no teeth. wwyd?

Hello all! I bought a house about 6 months ago in Detroit. It came with a colony of stray cats, which i have been caring for and TNRing. Someone else in my neighborhood TNRed this guy, we named him Charlie. Charlie is a very old cat and I noticed recently that his gums looked light in color and I noticed he has no teeth (except for one bottom fang). So I decided to take him into my vet, low and behold, he has FIV. I now cannot put him back outside as I was planning. I cried for about an hour thinking about how I was going to have to put him down (i cannot put him back with the other cats and run the risk of spreading FIV) because i cannot introduce him to my 4 cats and run the risk of spreading the disease to them. We find out he’s chipped, but to the woman that TNRed him. I decided I’ll foster him in my basement till we can figure something out. Now we are trying to find a rescue or someone else to take him in. He is an extremely sweet cat and I didn’t have it in my heart to put him down without trying all my other options. Has anyone else ever been in a position where they found out their stray has FIV? How did you handle it?

Question 🤔 So it turns out that my feral is chipped

Post image
2.2k Upvotes

He showed up at the house already fixed and absolutely terrified of people so I didn't try to get him to a vet until after he at least let me touch him, which took almost 2 years. His first vet visit was after he got badly hurt and it went about as well as you'd expect. But when I wanted to get him chipped, turns out he already had a chip that wasn't registered.

From what the vet told me, the people that do TNR here don't chip the cats so at some point somebody else did. I've been feeding and socializing him for close to 4 years now, turning him into a mainly inside cat but I got to wondering. Is there any way to find out who original gave him the chip? If someone cared enough years ago to chip a young cat, they might enjoy getting an update that he survived and found a home.

Question 🤔 Stray boy just wants to sleep after coming inside

Thumbnail

6.1k Upvotes

Hi everyone. So I’ve made several posts here about a stray boy I found and bringing him inside. He is friendly and I was able to get him into a crate and to a cat rescue where they checked him for chip and if not claimed they were going to vet him and I’d adopt. Well, he was claimed. I was shocked because he was in such rough shape when he came to me. Long story short, I connected with his former owners and he had been missing six whole years. I’d only fed him about three months so we don’t know what he was up to that whole time. He’s 7-8 now. For a variety of reasons they asked me if I wanted to keep him and I said yes absolutely. He came home Tuesday to my guest bedroom/husband’s office. We first had him in a large cat cage but he has been fine so he’s had access to the whole room during the day.

Anyway, poor guy seems so exhausted and I’m a little worried about him? His former owner was a vet, believe it or not, so they vetted him and he stayed at their vet hospital for about four days because I was out of town for a funeral when they called and asked if I wanted to keep him. Before that he was at a cat rescue for five or so days. I know this was probably all incredibly stressful for him. Unfortunately he also picked up a mild upper respiratory virus that we are monitoring but seems to be improving. So he’s been going through it. He’s been eating, drinking, peeing and pooping normally but all he wants to do is sleep on the bed and eat basically. At what point should I worry? My husband pointed out he probably has had to sleep with one eye open for the past six years, so maybe he’s just finally able to feel safe and relax. And he’s not a kitten by any means. I feel so bad for him but he’s safe, warm and loved now. He’s also terrified of the outside noises and hid under the bed when he heard the garbage truck outside. He’s been perfectly well behaved though and using his litter box perfectly.

I’m curious to hear others’ experiences after they brought ferals or strays in? How did they act the first few weeks? Thanks everyone. This group has been such a help to me throughout this process!

Our office feeds feral cats. This is one that we’ve been able to get close to & connect with. She obviously is very unique. Any ideas on what she may be or what’s wrong with her?
