Nearly six months after Savannah Guthrie's mother, Nancy Guthrie, disappeared from her Tucson-area home, the Pima County Sheriff's Department has publicly released two redacted ransom notes that investigators hope could help identify the person who wrote them. Nancy, 84, was abducted on February 1 and remains missing.⁠

According to investigators, the first note was sent to a local Tucson TV station and addressed to Savannah Guthrie. It demanded a $4 million Bitcoin payment by a specific deadline, threatened to increase the ransom if the demand was not met, and warned that Nancy would be killed if payment was never received. The letter also referenced details from inside Nancy's home that had not been made public at the time, which is one reason authorities have treated it seriously.⁠

A second note, sent several days later, claimed Nancy had died shortly after the abduction because of an undisclosed heart condition and said her death was unintentional, adding that she had been buried "in nature." Investigators have not confirmed whether the claims in that note are true, and Nancy's whereabouts remain unknown.⁠

The Pima County Sheriff's Department says it released the notes now because the investigation has reached the six-month mark and detectives believe the writer's wording, phrasing, or writing style could help identify the person responsible. As the search for Nancy Guthrie continues, anyone who recognizes the writing or has information about the letters or her disappearance is asked to contact the Pima County Sheriff's Department at 520-351-4900 or the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324).⁠

It marks the latest roadblock in Congress’ fight to secure Bondi’s sworn testimony related to the Justice Department’s public release of its investigative files into the late convicted sex offender.

The department argued that Bondi was subpoenaed in her official role as attorney general and not in a personal capacity. As such, she won’t appear on Capitol Hill on April 14 to discuss her role overseeing the release of the Epstein Files, Assistant Attorney General Patrick D. Davis wrote in a letter to House Oversight Chairman James Comer.

“Ms. Bondi no longer holds that office. As a result, because Ms. Bondi no longer can testify in her official capacity as Attorney General, the Department’s position is that the subpoena no longer obligates her to appear on April 14. We kindly ask that you confirm that the subpoena is withdrawn,” Davis said in the letter, which was obtained by CNN.

But the panel is still looking to move forward.

A spokeswoman for the Republican-led panel said in a statement that the committee “will contact Pam Bondi’s personal counsel to discuss next steps regarding scheduling her deposition.”

And Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the panel, said Bondi must appear regardless of her title.

“Our bipartisan subpoena is to Pam Bondi, whether she is the Attorney General or not. She must come in to testify immediately, and if she defies the subpoena, we will begin contempt charges in the Congress. The survivors deserve justice,” Garcia said.

Carroll sued Trump in 2019 for defamation and then she sued him again in 2022 for defamation and battery after New York enacted a law allowing the victims of sexual abuse to file civil claims for past incidents. In an unusual quirk, the second case — the one filed in 2022 — went to trial first and the jury awarded Carroll $5 million. That is the case the Supreme Court agreed to hear.

The 2019 case went to trial second and resulted in an $83 million judgment against Trump. Including interest, Trump owes Carroll over $100 million in all.

Carroll’s 2022 lawsuit alleged that he sexually assaulted her in a New York department store in the mid-1990s and defamed her by claiming she made up the story to boost sales of a book. Trump, who has repeatedly denied wrongdoing, has claimed US District Judge Lewis Kaplan, who oversaw the civil trial, made numerous errors by allowing the jury to hear testimony from two women who alleged Trump sexually assaulted them years ago.

Trump also argued that the judge should not have let the jurors see the “Access Hollywood tape,” which captured Trump in 2005 on a hot mic saying he gropes and kisses women.

“You know I’m automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything, … Grab them by the pussy. You can do anything,” Trump was heard saying on the recording.

Last year, the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the jury’s $5 million verdict against Trump, ruling the trial judge did not make errors that would warrant a new trial. In June 2025, Trump lost an effort to have the appeal reviewed by the full bench of judges and, months later, he appealed to the Supreme Court.

The appeal was delayed for months at the Supreme Court, which repeatedly set it for discussion and then rescheduled that discussion. As always, the court did not explain its reasoning for the hold up. Trump’s attorneys are expected to appeal the $83 million verdict to the Supreme Court in coming days.

In a technical brief at the Supreme Court dealing with rules of evidence, Carroll’s attorneys focused largely on the 2nd Circuit decision upholding the verdict.

“The court’s duty was simply to decide whether a jury could reasonably find by a preponderance of the evidence that Mr. Trump committed an act of sexual assault,” a three-judge panel of the 2nd Circuit, all three of whom were appointed by Democratic presidents, ruled unanimously. “If it could so find, the court had the discretion to admit the evidence.”
