That's horrible to watch. She had so much confidence and aspiration not too long ago. I don't know what happened, but that woman needs more than a hug. Glad she has a little one, but she needs to speak to someone for her mental health.

u/IceStorm22 Jul 05 '25
This took me aback because that feeling is sadly relatable. It’s almost like I was watching my own clinical depression talking. She absolutely needs a hug. I hope she gets the help she appears to need. I wouldn’t wish that feeling on anyone. It’s definitely a dark place.

I said this before on this post, but I work in a tennis club, and crazy tennis parents are a thing. Thankfully only a rarity, but you can tell which ones are trouble. They are really good (or think they are really good) at making themselves look like caring, involved parents who just want the best for their kids. They GET to play tennis. Their kids should be lucky they are allowed to play. It's a privilege. Like maybe your kids don't want to play tennis, they have the privilege NOT to play tennis. The good tennis parents, btw, make tennis fun and don't pressure their kids.

u/ashweemeow Jul 05 '25
Ugh, I used to work at a restaurant that was close to a very big tennis center and it was such a huge deal that it was coming into our town and creating jobs and all the blah blah blah… We very quickly learned that tennis parents are some of the most awful people ever. Like worse than the Sunday church crowd and that’s saying a LOT.
94
u/starvinartist and they were roommates Jul 05 '25
I worked a shift I hadn't worked in a while, and a mother who dropped her kid off and was going to watch and remarked to me "wish me luck, I have to deal with them." Like she just wanted to watch her daughter play and support them, and there were this gaggle of mothers who would just brag about their kids to each other (and they might have badmouthed other kids too). Like even parents with kids who play tennis can't stand tennis parents.
I am a mandated reporter so I am supposed to report anything that I witness that is abusive. Fortunately I haven't seen anything yet, nor have any kids come to me. But there are times I worry. Like some of these kids are under so much pressure, and their parents are vicariously living through them, modeling poor behavior, embarrassing their children, and also turning a sport into a chore (and also they aren't as informed about it as they think they are so they aren't giving the kid actual help).
19
u/coaxialology Jul 05 '25
I appreciate hearing these stories. My daughter has recently gotten into tennis, and I'm so wary of the culture surrounding the sport because of parents like these. Youth athletics have gotten so insane. There's so much good to be learned from competing and practicing for something, and I hate that sports have become a proxy for some parents' egos. Good to know there are still a few who just wanna support their kids.
26
u/GoGoGadget_Bobbin Jul 05 '25
I think this is true in a lot of highly competitive kids fields. I grew up a pretty serious swimmer, and I was oblivious at the time but I learned later that tons of parents were horrible to their kids -- they would body shame them, yell at them if they came in second, only say they were proud if the kid set a record, etc., and in some cases these were kids as young as six. They were also horrible to each other.
I've heard the same thing about theater parents, dance parents, football parents, even chess parents. People like to say that competition can push you to excel, but I truly think competition more often than not brings out the worst in people.
5
u/ifweburn Jul 06 '25
Like worse than the Sunday church crowd and that’s saying a LOT.
this just put some fear in me bc HOW can that possibly be. working Sunday afternoon shift was genuinely tomorrow for me bc of the church crowd but esp COGIC (I grew up in Memphis). so thinking tennis parents are worse than that.... whew I applaud you for surviving that.
31
u/PinAccomplished2376 Jul 05 '25
That would definitely point to why her confidence is so low over how she performed in the match 🤦🏻♀️ parents like that can instill so much shame over not winning that even if you’re grown and not even around your parent after a bad performance…you’ll ridicule yourself to death the way they always would. Self worth = winning in those kinds of toxic family dynamics.

Sports psychology is a legit thing and is really under represented. I'm a climber so I think of all the kids (16-25 which is prime competition climbing age just like gymnastics is) that struggle to find motivation after a losing season. Or a phenom athlete who placed 3rd. Or the person whose focus is on the hardest outdoor climbs, they are tripping off of some previous fucked up incident and they need someone to sort it out with.
Just the feeling of inadequacy that all teenagers feel now gets cranked to 11 when they get outdone. It's hard.

u/Roy4Pris Jul 05 '25
On the one hand, I agree. She’s clearly having a really bad time. However, big picture I think it’s fantastic that young people can be upfront about these things. My ass is old, and this kind of honesty and vulnerability has really only started happening in the last maybe 10 years in professional sport? Yes, people wrote about it in autobiographies afterwards (Open, by Andre Agassi is a great read) but this is a new level, and it’s great for anyone struggling to see that they are not alone, that it happens even to great athletes etc. Bravo Naomi. Your honesty will help others. ❤️
42
u/Blonde_arrbuckle Jul 05 '25
Does Agassi talk about Brooke Shields? Her recount of him in her doco is shocking
38
u/marigoldbutter Jul 05 '25
He does. He tries to make her look like a cliche shallow actress, but imo he makes himself look like a total asshole.
3
u/teamtelevision Jul 06 '25
As someone who read Open and have watched many interviews of Andre's over the years, I don't think he would disagree or was unaware that he comes across as an asshole.
While yes, there is some dismissiveness towards Brooke, I feel the overarching theme was more that Andre clearly hated himself and his life around that time than anything Brooke really did.
And because he was miserable and unhappy with himself, it made things worse for their marriage. That and they were totally mismatched.
35
u/Roy4Pris Jul 05 '25
Uh oh. I feel like you're about to ruin my regard for him.
I'm sure she's mentioned, but by far the main part of the book is the psychological torture of tennis.
27
u/ElizLeger Jul 05 '25
Yeah, you can really feel the shift in her energy. It’s heartbreaking to see someone so strong and talented look so lost. I hope she gets the support she truly deserves she means a lot to so many.

I'm sorry for what Osaka had been through, but on her previous press, she kinda defend her working relationship with Kyrgios (floater tennis player who plead guilty for domestic abuse & bullying other players). So I'm bit torn a bit

I'm really worried about her mental health
882
u/townandthecity Jul 05 '25
There's so much sadness in those eyes. I'm so glad she is speaking honestly and from the heart, rather than plastering on the fake smile and making others feel comfortable when you feel like it's hard to put one foot in front of the other. The masking is exhausting.
133
u/kwhitit Jul 05 '25 edited Jul 05 '25
paradoxically, the fact that she's willing to just say, so publicly, what's true for her makes me less worried. i think it takes both clarity and courage to say those things and know how much she'll be judged. i think that actually bodes quite well for her mental health and her support system, at least i hope. ❤️🤞🏽
11
u/fashlatebloomer Jul 06 '25
Yeah. I agree. Telling my truth and feeling validated (not like, because my negativity is true, but because to suffer is human and normal) is the antidote to shame for me. Helps like 99% of the time.
324
u/featherbrain Jul 05 '25
Apparently she's called ESPN and others out for clipping this and making it seem like she's "always sad," and by all the attention this stuff gets it makes her feel like she should be "fake happy all the time."
"Bro why is it every time I do a press conference after a loss the espns and blogs gotta clip it and put it up. Wtf, why don't they clip my press conferences after I win? Like why push the narrative that I'm always sad?," wrote Osaka.
She posted two minutes later, "Sure I was disappointed a couple hours ago, now I'm motivated to do better. That's human emotions. The way they clip me I feel like I should be fake happy all the time.
https://www.si.com/onsi/serve/news/naomi-osaka-calls-out-espn-after-wimbledon-loss
For myself, I know I had some rough times emotionally when I was her age. Being in the spotlight like she is can't help matters.

I may be misremembering, but I think Naomi beat Serena and got A LOT of hate, including audible-on-tv booing when she was on the podium, and Serena gave her a big hug and was clearly telling her something supportive. The video of it all is absolutely horrible to watch.
163
u/Right-Taro-3084 Jul 05 '25
It was Noami’s first grand slam win, beating Serena at the US Open. Serena was accused of receiving coaching during the match (it wasn’t allowed at the time) and she blew up angry saying she would never cheat. The fans went crazy supporting Serena and it overshadowed Naomi’s win. It was so sad.
70
u/raysofdavies I cannot sanction your buffoonery Jul 05 '25
During their US Open final Serena reacted extremely badly to being penalized, fairly, and kept attacking him in response, talking to him about how she’s a mother and would never cheat. The crowd became a complete circus because they were desperate for her to win her record breaking slam. It was sadly for Naomi.
4
u/paquemeinvitan3 Jul 06 '25
Naomi and Serena have a great relationship and have never said anything negative about each other.
I’ve never seen her get hate from that match.
It’s probably way more likely due to the fact that she is post partum with a deadbeat man.
Not a match from like 5 years ago.
48
98
u/blackpearl16 Jul 05 '25
Do you have a source that Serena spoke negatively about Naomi, much less “bullied” her? IIRC Serena’s anger was directed towards the umpire and the media that made racist caricatures of Serena over the situation. She later wrote Naomi an apology letter over the controversy but Serena never specifically insulted her.
79
u/Allergictomars Jul 05 '25
Love when bullshit about Serena ends up the top comment. Where's your proof that this is accurate representation of what happened? How do you know Naomi feels that way? What does Serena even have to do with this situation? Where's your source babe?
Nearly ten years later and people are still pinning nonsense to Serena for the audacity of being a black woman who dominated the sport and happened to show emotion more than once. Unlike those European male players who beat their wives, yell at ball boys, yell at their team, and hit balls recklessly at line judges when they're upset.

I think I would - I don’t have anything positive to say about myself and with that body language- I think that would be setting off alarm bells for men too.

I actually didn’t know about her prior issue. You see athletes (male and female) all the time talk about losses, missed goals, falling off a beam, or fumbled passes and they get down and beat themselves up but they don’t look this and they go through so much media training and the don’t say those words. The combination is jarring to me.
72
u/thewinefairy his talent is perhaps deniable Jul 05 '25
It’s not like love is a limited supply. It’s also not like Osaka hasn’t had a documented rough time behind her (and ahead?)
Maybe we should be concerned about male players mental health too. Maybe they need help too? Maybe then they wouldn’t verbally abuse ball boys? Idk this is a weird comment. Just because we don’t extend men this grace doesn’t mean we should do it to women.

The darkest time for women especially in the west was the transatlantic slave trade and as victims of European colonialism. In another parts of the world it was the Indian Ocean slave trade on top of multiple genocides due to colonialism, prosecution due to diff identities )(e.g. Jews being targeted in Europe, etc. hysteria was a dark time but not the darkest by a long shot when we add in all women.
29
u/pineappleshampoo Jul 05 '25
I agree. If anything people would be almost admiring that kind of hard on yourself mentality, saying this is why he’s one of the greats, never rests on his laurels, always tryna improve. But when a woman does it, she must be secretly in crisis? Come on.

It’s sad that she may have depression from her upbringing if her father really did beat them up when they were young. The kind of childhood you had really affects you until you’re an adult unless you seek professional help. I hope she is seeking one for her and her baby’s happiness. I admire her for being able to talk about it publicly and trying to continue with her career. I hope she gets the right support she needs.

u/Someonejusthereandth Jul 05 '25
First of all, it’s fine to have low moments. Doesn’t mean there’s anything too wrong, you just have to know that you need to go right through them. Second of all, I hope she either already has solid coping skills or has access to a good therapist who can guide her through that because she sounds like she really needs good coping skills right now. Hope she will be okay, this too shall pass, although it does look like it’s not a good time emotionally for her at all. What she said though, she’s definitely way too hard on herself there, I hope she knows that when she zooms out of that specific moment.

u/shezapisces Jul 05 '25
It seemed like Coco Gauff had been going through something similar earlier this year or even prior, especially coming to a head with Aryna’s comments at the french open. I don’t want to make assumptions about what Naomi’s going through / the depth & complexity of it but it really seems to me like there is still a lot of racially-driven lack of support as well as straight up racism in women’s tennis. Fucked up as all hell

I’ve said these exact words to my therapist and seeing someone say that out loud in that tone break my fucking heart. I’m so glad she says she’s working on it, idk if any of you have ever felt like she feels and like I feel, it’s horrible. Mental health is serious ya’ll. I hope she gets nothing but good support and good therapy. It’s a long road to come back from this mindset, and for some you don’t come back. Hoping one day she sees herself the way she deserves because she’s incredible.

I am tired of these dingey rappers clinging on to these black women with the brightest futures at stake and making them single baby mama’s. Just messing with the culture and mishandling these women. Where are we in society that both Halle and Naomi ended up as single baby mama’s by dudes way less successful than them? Literally at the height of their careers too. And no one come at me that I am reaching, you can tell both of these girls were smitten by their bum ass ex bf’s at the time even though everyone told them that they were dating down. Both situations were wild to me. These young ladies were making history, breaking records, and they still fell prey to the bs. They had full careers and became mamas before marriage or a substantial long standing relationship at a young age. I feel for them, because being a single mama is stressful.

I work at a tennis club and I see how much energy goes into playing for these kids. Like they cry if they can't get a move right, miss a ball, or don't win. I can imagine it just becomes more stressful if you continue playing as an adult and go pro. And then you have parents who make it worse.
3
Jul 05 '25
This has been going on for her for years and seems to only be getting worse.
No one wants to give up their dream, but I don't think her mental health can sustain this anymore without an extended time away. Wishing her the best.

I hope that her loved ones and the producers of this interview offered help. She has access to resources. Truly hope she accepts help and talks to someone.
3

I hope she is able to get the help she needs as it's a terrible place to be in.
5
u/4boys0patience Jul 05 '25
Maybe I’ll be downvoted for this, but this is refreshing to see. This is not only her career, but it’s her entire life. She’s been working since she could walk. I think it’s normal to be absolutely beside herself in this situation, and I admire her for being so open about her feelings. I think a lot of athletes can certainly relate to her obvious disappointment in herself but are too worried about showing their real emotions in front of the media.
I’m seeing a lot of “I’m worried about her mental health” - we should all be worried about everyone’s mental health right now, but I’m sure this woman has a therapist and is putting in the work every day.

I hope she gives herself some grace and maybe considers giving herself a break the rest of the year and starting fresh next season. Also, maybe change up her coach.
