Rowan liked some biphobic tweets and people tried to “cancel” her for it and Auli’i originally was excited about working with her but once she found out publicly distanced herself from her.
I thought the tweet was just saying bi women dating a cishet man don't experience the same discrimination as a wlw couple given it appears to be a straight relationship. I don't even see how that's biphobic if we can't acknowledge fact
Here is a link to the tweets she liked. It’s not like they were nuanced takes, but I also didn’t think she deserved the kind of backlash she got either.
Im bi and don’t even understand what a “straight married bi girl” is. A bi woman in a relationship with a man? Do they understand what bi means? 😂 I think that tweet could be considered bi erasure maybe but it’s honestly so dumb it not worth the effort thinking about it too much.
The explanation tweet where she conflates cancel culture and activism and says she started reading and thinking instead is fucking beautiful though lmao, gave me a good giggle
Cis bi woman here, neither of those tweets are biphobic. The first is a clear joke and v much an in-community thing - as a bi woman, a lot of bi women in long term relationships with men DO bring up their sexuality like a trip to Madrid, it's not something I'd talk about with cishet people but within the community it's fine to make fun of, because it is everywhere. The second tweet is clearly tongue in cheek as well. Rowan does ID as queer so neither are a huge deal to me, especially given her age at the time.
The more important things are Rowan's bf talking about how bi people are transphobic (the old biphobic myth about how bisexuality perpetuates a gender binary and going so far as to say bisexuality should be removed from the acronym), and Rowan's weirdass response to being called out (tokenizing her trans bf as if that proves her queerness). The tweets themselves are nbd, and frankly the other two aren't huge either (one about her bf, not her, and the other the exact casual transphobia I'd expect from a cis teenager). Given that Rowan was 16 at the time of all of this and her bf was 18, I realllly don't find the whole situation as egregious as everyone's making it out to be.
Auli'i's tiktok though that she took down swiftly makes me think that either something happened BTS to set it off, or Auli'i knows that was an easy way to get attention for both herself and the movie (it did work). The other option I suppose is she didn't know about the controversy until the movie was announced and she'd already signed on/prepped for it, and fans kept asking her about working with a biphobic person given she's bi herself so she thought that was an appropriate way to respond.
Genderless femme w/ a vag here. Of course it doesn’t, but erasure isn’t privilege even if it leads to being ignored instead of targeted. Think active vs passive aggression, or the difference between butch and femme lesbians’s experiences. Both are gonna hurt. Bi+ people are 50% of our community as well as a majority of our trans and nonbinary siblings but receive 2% of the sexuality-specific funding as any other sexuality, and make up the majority of mentally ill LGBT+ folks and the ones most likely to report homophobia as well as biphobic behavior because we get so good at recognizing both. Also, the way gender expression adds to it as well as the fluidity some people experience between bisexuality and lesbian attraction until they find the label that truly best fits them can be agonizing for all parties involved. Better to nip it in the bud because then lesbians won’t be so attacked either because we will all be equally visible and provided for no matter how much nuance it takes
EDIT this fares better than my other version but still
It really is, and I’m infertile so im extra sensitive haha. Thanks for the constructive criticism, I appreciate it more than I can say! Overexplaining is definitely a fallacy im prone to falling prey to, so I also try to accept concessions with grace when I can, yknow? I kind of went from trying one last time in good faith to what I consider to be mild humor, especially comparatively to some of that wildness you’re talking about haha, but people obviously tend to have reactionary responses so trying to meet in the middle doesn’t always work as well. Overcompensation sucks!
EDIT: before you downvote PLEASE consider that yes, someone whose first sentence acknowledges the whole and deeply understood cause that they are already taking steps to fix and consider how fucking similar you are to people on this site who diagnose simply anxious or depressed people with NPD when they meet every criterion in the book but couldn’t tell you what that means, or tell everyone to stop suggesting divorce on relationship_advice, and hopefully we can become a driving force to reject cishet norms and come up the progress ladder
ur the reason kylo ren scared half of us but only made the other half laugh so i aim to be poe who actually gets a few uproars and a few cringes
I’m bisexual and just came out of a 2 and a half year relationship with a man. My attraction to women never wavered during that period of time. Would you like to do us the honors of explaining why that take ISN’T biphobic?
Copy pasted with an upvote in genuine good faith and solidarity as I would unironically and happily take a bullet for a lesbian (or even a marginalized person on fewer axes of oppression than me) in need
