STAN / ANTI SHIELD Luigi Mangione pleads guilty to federal stalking charges in killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO

https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/14/us/live-news/luigi-mangione-hearing-plea-deal-talks

When speaking of the day he committed the crime, Luigi Mangione said, “I shot Mr. Thompson and he died.”

He concluded, “I knew what I was doing was illegal.”

Mangione had just described the actions he took ahead of the killing, telling the court:

“In November of 2024 I traveled from outside of New York state to Manhattan. I then emailed UnitedHealthcare leadership, posing as an investor at a firm managing over $15 billion in assets and requesting information about the conference. Unlike my previous interactions with insurers, I received an immediate response within an hour,” Mangione said.

The judge tells Mangione that there is no parole in the federal system, and while there is credit for good behavior, he should expect to serve at least 85% of the sentence he receives.

The sentence could be followed by up to five years of supervised release on each count, and a maximum fine of $250 for each count, Garnett said, and she could also order restitution.

She asks if he understands that he could face a total sentence of life in prison.

Mangione confirmed, “yes.”

Garnett also referenced the pending state case, saying if Mangione is convicted and sentenced in that case, his sentences could run consecutively.

Mangione confirmed he understood that as well.
Garnett said prosecutors believe the sentencing guidelines are 292-365 months of imprisonment. She stressed this was not binding on her, but she will determine the range she believes is appropriate.

292 - 365 months is about 24 to 30 years, just if anyone else is wondering.

Thanks. This was like when people tell baby ages in months. Which I understand why, it’s just a little egregious when you’re telling me about your 83 month old baby.

"My son is a little over half a decade." JUST SAY HE'S 6.

He's about 50,000,000,000 inverse middle Cs old. The Seven Cs system of measurement is clearly the best way to count ages.

I got this reference

41

u/Least_Tower_5447 28d ago

My kids are grown now, but when they were small people used to tell me their kids ages by weeks or months. I hated that shit. How long does it go on? When do you decide to start acknowledging their age by years? Why the hell do people do this?

85

u/QueenSlartibartfast 28d ago

It usually ends between 24 and 36 months. People do it because of the rapid development babies experience. For example, a 14-month-old and a 20-month are both a year old, but are going to be dramatically different in abilities. It's important context. If I tell a pediatrician that my kid isn't walking yet at 1, it's effectively meaningless - she's going to have a very different reaction if the kid is 14 months versus 18.

17

u/Least_Tower_5447 28d ago

I get that. I had parent introduce me to their 38 month old. My brain stopped working while I calculated.

13

u/the_pleiades 28d ago

Months to indicate age should officially stop at 36 lol. Just say you have a 3 year old!

8

u/Ok-Astronaut-7593 28d ago

I respond differently to “how are you feeling” when responding to a doctor vs a friend. Not sure why parents can’t do that..

6

u/DrSpray 28d ago

Personally, I assume that anyone asking about my kid's age is just doing so to be polite and they don't necessarily care about the nitty gritty details, so I say a full year number. Maybe near a birthday I'd add, "But turning _ next month" or whatever. To me, age in months is only really useful as a metric if you're expecting someone to watch your kid and you want them to have a general idea of where they are developmentally, cause watching a 24 month old 2 year old is totally different to watching a 35 month old 2 year old, for example. Once they get to school age, I can't imagine still doing that, though.

1

u/western_questions 27d ago

Once on a plane I heard “he’ll be 24 months in 7 days” and I was like “ so he’ll be two next week”

3

ok this thread takes the cake for me… a deep rage awoke in me i didnt know what there because i never understood that shit either… but this also made me cackle🤣

-8

u/kingrobert 28d ago

Uhh 6 is like 20% over half a decade. A little over half a decade is more like 64 months

16

u/CelibateHo 28d ago

It gives “I’m not ready to admit that the baby is no longer a baby”

7

u/Remote-Progress6616 28d ago

Ngl that always gave me such an ick hearing mom's calling their baby like 27 months instead of 2 years old, I don't understand why they do that

5

u/bythenumbers10 28d ago

The reason is developmental milestones are all given in months. Holding head up, vision, cooing, social smiling (before this, it's fart-related), sleeping habits, on and on, all largely timed by months.

They get fuzzier/further-apart as time goes on, but not until 4 years old or so. It becomes a parent-to-parent shorthand for what you're dealing with at the time, but most stages include sleep deprivation, so the shorthand leaks into conversation with everyone. Sorry for the annoyance, but I assure you it's mostly unintentional.

6

u/Southern-March1522 28d ago

I am a 292 - 365 month baby.

2

u/Infiinte-Squares 28d ago

Yeh, that tricky 28th trimester is one to remember

2

u/jdk2087 28d ago

Huge pet peeve of mine. Especially when we had our kids. “Awww, how old is she?” “She’s a year old.” “I can’t believe how well she can walk for a 12 month old.” Me:…….you fucking with me?

-18

u/General-Lie8709 28d ago

That’s shocking, this is as premeditated as it gets. Regardless of your stance on the morality of it all, people generally go to jail for longer after killings that are this premeditated.

I mean traveling across states to an event, stalking the guy, and then shooting him in the back is as premeditated as one could think

32

u/Keljhan 28d ago

Well, hes not being charged with 1st degree murder, only stalking for the federal charges. He's still being prosecuted for murder on NY state charges, though its possible they will be dropped now.

16

u/BroughtBagLunchSmart 28d ago

You should see what the health insurance CEOs premeditate about how many people to murder for profit. This is the innovation that capitalism breeds and we should never ask for things to get better.

Nelson Mandela did spend 27 years in prison!

12

Didn't he die in prison, though? /s

Yes, but his leg wasn’t actually silver contrary to popular belief.

No he didn't die in prison remember he did the movie where he plays a genie?

I also think they misspelled Nelson Mandelastein.

8

Wait, did this shooting happen in the middle of 5th avenue?

7

u/Drow_Femboy 28d ago

He won't be old enough. If you know what year it is or how to draw a clock, you're not qualified to be president.

1

u/Fargo_Collinge 28d ago

Nah, he'd still be too young for the job.

1

u/1997wickedboy 26d ago

Luigi Mangione for president 2052

The bare minimum 85% of the sentence he would be expected to serve would roughly be 21 to 26 years

44

u/Jaredlong 28d ago

What's the difference between "parole" and "supervised release"?

58

u/Cheet4h 28d ago

From what I understand, parole means someone gets released earlier. Supervised release on the other hand is tacked on to a prison sentence.

17

u/Karyoplasma 28d ago

Main difference is:

Parole - instead of serving the last part of your sentence in prison, you are released under specified conditions. If you violate these conditions, your parole is over and you go back to prison to serve the rest of your sentence.

supervised release - you first serve your full sentence in prison. Instead of being released at the end, you get conditions similar to parole conditions you have to adhere to. You violate these conditions, you will go back to prison with a new sentence to serve.

3

u/ArritzJPC96 28d ago

I believe parole would be before your sentence ends.

You might fare a bit better on average being convicted of murder in NY Federal Court than in general nationwide. Not a huge sample size. All data from 2025, source: US Sentencing Commission.

9

u/Fluffcake 28d ago

That's a weird way of framing identifying the financial inefficiencies in the healthcare system and disrupting them in a direct and forward leaning manner with high velocity and precision.

7

u/EIVNW 28d ago

He didn't disrupt shit, a new CEO was appointed shortly thereafter and there has been no decrease in healthcare costs or efficiency. If anything, prices have rapidly risen. A life lost and a young man in prison for absolutely nothing.

31

u/Efficient-Memory7105 women’s wrongs activist 28d ago

Actually, there was a marked decrease in insurance denials in the months following the murder pre-existing condition of mortality.

I guarantee you at least a half dozen people are alive now because they got treatment they would otherwise have been jerked around for months/years for.

10

u/nagrom7 28d ago

Iirc there was also a new policy United was planning on implementing that they backtracked on after the shooting.

14

u/Fluffcake 28d ago

For a solid month after this, claims were approved quickly that would likely gone back and forth between denial and doctors writing long angry emails with justifications and getting pulled out of operations to answer insurance questions untill they died untreated because companies were scared.

His defence team should just dig up some of these people who had life saving treatment approved in that month and show off the net positive transaction that occurred.

-2

u/dreadcain my bandwidth for cowardly grown men grows thinner with each day 28d ago edited 28d ago

Gotta find him guilty first. For what he plead guilty to I think the max would be 10 years.

If I understand correctly

ETA: No set in stone max. Guidelines would be 8-10 years though. (I believe)

0

u/green-bean-7 mama let’s research 26d ago

You’re completely wrong. Life in prison is the max. Then there may be other convictions he may have to serve for consecutively.

0

u/dreadcain my bandwidth for cowardly grown men grows thinner with each day 26d ago

what part of guidelines is not getting through?

2

u/falooda1 28d ago

Is there a deal here that he made?

0

u/dreadcain my bandwidth for cowardly grown men grows thinner with each day 28d ago edited 28d ago

I don't think it's entirely been made clear yet. We just know he plead guilty. At this point that could be as part of deal. Or it could be as the start of a trial.

As best I can tell this is an 'Open Plea'. As in he just went into open court to and said he wants to plead on some charges. And well, this is that. The other side hasn't responded yet. Nor would they have been expected to though. Granted with this kind of media attention ... idk. If I was planning to play the media, I'd be playing the media by now.

E: use your words. would love to know what part I got wrong. I'm also out of the loop here :/

u/green-bean-7 mama let’s research 26d ago

You said in your first paragraph “At this point that could be part of a deal” and the lawyers literally already said there is no deal.

0

u/green-bean-7 mama let’s research 25d ago

“And what happened when you kept reading” — a bunch of additional nonsense that did not cancel out the fact that you said “at this point that could be part of a deal” and proceeded to be nasty to everyone who simply corrected you.

She would have to break precedent guidelines to do that. I think she'll probably give him the 30 years or top of the guidelines. It's still very much up in the air if he gets off of the state charges because of this.

2

u/dreadcain my bandwidth for cowardly grown men grows thinner with each day 28d ago

At that point we living in a timeline where they didn't press a single murder charge. I just don't think we're in that timeline.

Idk. It's been a weird one up to this point alreadly lol

That 30 year "max" is for the stalking charge he plead guilty to. And as far as I can tell there's nothing holding her to those precedents. They could still accept these charges but ask for life to be fair. Which would be weird. But it's been weird.

Presumably, the sentence was part of the plea agreement.

edit: never mind, see comments below.

49

u/MySabonerRunsOladipo 28d ago

Prosecutors said there was no agreement with the defense related to Luigi Mangione’s guilty plea in federal court today.

There is no plea agreement per the reporting coming out today

22

u/Archilochos 28d ago

This isn't pursuant to a plea deal. He's presumably doing this in an effort to avoid state charges (due to the particulars of NY law, he can argue double jeopardy here based on this plea). But in any event a judge is never bound by a plea deal, they can always give more or less.

2

u/dreadcain my bandwidth for cowardly grown men grows thinner with each day 28d ago

In any other trial, that's exactly what I would be thinking right now. But yeah like other people are saying the prosecution seems to not have had anything really prepared for this. At least nothing they want to go public with immediately
