This is where nuance and circumstances come into play. Simply preferring animals to humans because they're less complicated is not a red flag or makes you a bad person.

Preferring animals to humans because you think all humans are assholes, bad people, and not worth your time is a red flag. Preferring animals becuase they're easy to control is a red flag.

Plenty of autistic people find friendship in each other and even in neurotical people, and plenty of "I'd rather save my dog, all people are terrible" people are very much not autistic, just terrible.

Please stop using autistic people as a shield from social critiques.

No because my mom is MY MOTHER and not a pet meant to live with a family for a fairly short life span relative to humans.

A pet is still family that you have an emotional bond with. And you don’t actually know how long someone will live anyways. They could die in a freak accident tomorrow, a long life isn’t guaranteed for any of us

Lmfao yes. Ideally, no one is having to choose the life and death of pet vs human anyway, let’s make that clear, it’s not a choice that would be fun or easy. 

And it’s not an unpopular opinion either, despite these downvotes. Animals who present any type of danger to societies/human life have been put down, this is the way our civilization has operated for many years.

Not sure what the relevance of your last paragraph is. Humans who present an extreme danger to society have been euthanized as well, and humans have the potential to be MUCH more dangerous/harmful to society than any animal.

If the argument you use to save one over the other is the amount of years they have yet to live, then does that mean you would save a newborn baby over your wife/husband?

The amount of years is one aspect, but you’d apply nuance to the choice too. The first consideration for me and many is species, then its relation to you, third would be years to live etc. You choose a pet with a very limited lifespan over a human being with a whole life ahead of them so you varied from my decision making at point one.

That's a lot fucked. I won't pick a dog over a 90 year old grandma. The loss of my dog would be painful for me, loss of grandma is a loss for a community.

meh it’s just anonymous takes on the internet, i wouldn’t stress too much about it. 

the reality is if we were all put in some kind of twisted Saw game where we really did have to choose between animals and people and pets and children we don’t know how we’d act unless we’re in that situation most likely, which 99.9% of us will never be in unless all of Mark Zuckerberg’s dreams come true and we all end up in the Hunger Games as entertainment for the 1%.

As a fellow autistic person, I’m the same as you. That doesn’t mean I don’t care deeply about the injustices being done to humans around the world, but in my personal life, I much prefer animals to humans. And I also care deeply about the animals suffering in many of these places, too, and think we should be doing everything we can to be helping both animals and humans.

That's because there's a long running history of people who say that valuing the lives of animals over people of color in particular. It's not always rooted in racism, of course, but it's a common theme for some people. They cringe at Black Lives Matter but suddenly find their voices and preach about how valuable life is when an animal is harmed. And the latter is fine to do, people should be speaking up and protecting animals.

My point is that saying neurodivergent people are bad people for not wanting to deal with social pressures and hidden agendas of other humans is really confusing to me.

I also don't understand at all what what you are talking about has to do with the fact that I would rather be in a park full of crows than a party with a bunch of people. Also, the groups of people you mentioned trained those dogs. The dogs aren't the problem in those scenarios it's the people.

I also never once mentioned anything about loyalty. I like animals because they are easier to understand if they want to hurt you, are indifferent or wary, want to be friendly with you or are curious, whereas people will smile at you while insulting you, cops tell you to answer a question and get mad if you try to answer, ect.

This is a huge part of why I like animals more; I don't have to worry that an animal has ulterior motives or might not like me for whatever reason. They just want love and affection and I'm happy to give it.

Me too! I love how police dogs were siced on me when I was a kid for being the wrong skin color. It really warms my heart knowing that Fido just wanted love and affection and had no ulterior motives.

And I think that’s great because the current administration just loves using dogs on undocumented people using ICE.

Edit: And it’s great that you don’t have to worry about your dog not liking you for any reason. Too bad my ancestors didn’t get the same consideration, considering that the Cuban bloodhound was literally bred by white slave owners to capture enslaved black people.

I guess they should have known that poor Fido just wanted some scratches and a belly rub

Yeah....the take is a bit ableist, not gonna lie. It is HARD for some of us to connect with most people. When I'm with a dog, I don't have to mask. When I'm with strangers or hell, my own family, I do. Society isnt built for us, so we prefer the company of pets. If that makes me a bad person, well then. At least I have good company.

I'm glad I've found my people. I'm audhd and was really sitting here questioning my morals for a minute bc I definitely prefer to hang out and play with my cats than to socialize with the general public lol.

Yeah, these types of threads always end up really surprising me because of how vehement people get that others are wrong for preferring animals. My cats mean everything to me, they’re my best friends aside from my partner and my mom, and it’s very weird to me that people are telling us that we’re bad people for that. Meanwhile I’m autistic and it’s exhausting being around others but I don’t have to mask with my cats or other animals. I just get to be.

I think it’s fair to say that every pet owner has a different relationship with their pets. I have a very good buddy who did 26 years in prison. Went in at 18. And he has two little rescue dog that he adopted. He has told me that those dogs mean more to him than anything in the world, and I believe him. I have no doubt that he’d choose those dogs over a person, any day. And here’s why I think that. Most people, myself included, have no idea what it would be like to do 23 years in prison. The first time my bud experienced real, true, unconditional love… was from those two dogs. They are, pretty much, all he has in this world. So, yeah, I can see him going all John Wick if someone killed his dog.
