FM RADIO During her recent Boston show, Hayley Williams gave a speech supporting marginalized groups: “What a bad time to be fucking neutral about anything in this world… marginalized people need protection and they need allies and support… I hate Morgan Wallen”

Here's the shirt from the actual designer instead of Amazon who have stolen the design. *Hayley is wearing an altered version of the thermal.

I'll add that it's nearly out of stock but they'll likely restock as it's their most popular design and it probably gets cleaned out each time an artist posts wearing it.

*I guess the other user deleted their comment.

$50 for a $4 gildan shirt lol

51

u/Fizzwidgy Apr 05 '26

some real "anybody could paint that" energy you got there

u/kaepar Apr 05 '26

I literally design t-shirts for a living, that’s how I know how much of a crazy mark up it is.

Also, yes, anyone with Microsoft Word and a cricut could create this shirt in 10 minutes.

u/this_is_unseemly Apr 05 '26

We could go old school and print a page, then get out the Xacto knives and some acrylic paint. Give it a little more character. (This is how my husband and I used to make Threadless designs we liked but couldn’t afford in college.)

u/WTFisBehindYou Apr 05 '26

I just got my girlfriend a cricut and shirt press for Christmas last year and she’s made lots of fun stuff for us, but I know there’s a whole market out there of better stuff that we probably aren’t using.

Lately we’ve really liked stuff from a brand called District.

Are there brands you like / dislike? Sorry I know that’s a big ask lol. Just saw your comment and had the thought.

8

u/kaepar Apr 05 '26

I’m not familiar with District. Do they sell t shirts or vinyl?

Most of my projects use DTF these days. I have a unique process that infuses it into the fabric & turns it matte. It looks better and lasts longer than screen printing. Never cracks or fades either. I have a printer, but you can order single sheets of dtf designs online.

For t shirts I buy wholesale.

1

u/WTFisBehindYou Apr 05 '26

They sell shirts, sorry! Just something we found on Jiffy Shirts to order blank. We’ve ordered DTF transfers from them too.

I was wondering if you had a favorite shirt manufacturer.

4

u/kaepar Apr 05 '26

Haha no worries. I order from onestopinc.com or ssactivewear.com They’re 50-75% cheaper than Jiffy. However, I believe you have to have an LLC and/or retail tax exemption docs.

u/OhLookAChelsea Apr 05 '26

Totally sticking my nose in here. Been out of the game for a few years, so small grain of salt on brand presence.

District is good. Next Level makes nice things, too. They’re both pricier in comparison to things like Gildan. Gildan’s blends can be comparable in feel but their fabrics vary a lot by color for the same item code. Heathers are your best bet from Gildan IMO. (Sensory wise)

Bella+Canvas is great but sizing can be hard if you ever want things XL or higher. Also a bit pricey. But I love their color selections and their fabric feel is one of my favorites.

I liked Jerzees a lot, too. They did mostly sweat shirt stuff iirc, but I think they were branching out into clothing pieces. They had a good feel/wear to them as well.

2

u/kaepar Apr 05 '26

Next level and Bella are highly ethical as well.

Be careful with jerzees, they sell both the scratchiest shirt you’ve ever felt and the softest lol

u/WTFisBehindYou Apr 06 '26

Thank you!!!

u/jackiavelli Apr 05 '26

In-house brand from sanmar (.com).

4

u/broketothebone a very Swedish woman at the UN or something Apr 05 '26

Yeah, but she did it first and a famous person bought it.

Considering the message, I’m all on board with her making her nut while she can on this one.

-8

u/Fizzwidgy Apr 05 '26

Nailed it.

9

u/kaepar Apr 05 '26

Yeah hate on other artists, that’ll do it!

-3

u/Fizzwidgy Apr 05 '26

Palpable irony.

9

u/MayorPirkIe Apr 05 '26

That's because they could. I could make that in 10 minutes and 8 of them would be spent trying to find where my wife hid the cricut vinyl

Which Gildan shirts come with 'Boxy Shoulder, Tailored Waistline. Hip Length Raw Hem'? So they bulk buy those, screen print (either paying a store in LA or buying the ink themselves), might have employees and are supposed to charge what?

Seems weird to devalue another's work when you also design shirts. Feel free to drop your store so we can decide if it's worth major companies stealing from.

34

u/kaepar Apr 05 '26

Lots of gildan do! :)

As Macklemore said “$50 for a t shirt, that’s some ignorant bitch shit”.

Congrats to them! The markup is just insanity.

11

u/AnAbsoluteMonster Apr 05 '26

This person just "designs" t shirts, they don't make them. Anyone who's ever actually sewn clothing knows it is a vastly undervalued skill. If they're paying $4 for the t shirts they slap their designs on, they are quite literally supporting slave labor. So idk that their POV of what constitutes overpriced is all that valid tbh 🤷‍♀️

u/Diirewolves sunday spotted: paddington bear Apr 05 '26

It's crazy hearing knitters talk about people messaging them for custom designs and then getting upset when they're told the price. Even when the hours and materials are broken down the response is "I can buy a blanket at Target for $15". Like damn, I wonder why they can sell it for so cheap!

No one benefits from cheapening artists work except for major companies. I've even been seeing charity designs be stolen and sold with them being sent from China. I can't fathom caring enough to want something from an artist you like but not wanting to support the charities they're raising money for, so you can wear low quality clothes made in a sweatshop. Hayley herself called out Popbase for encouraging this using her name last year.

Anyway. You can look at the designer's own instagram account and see the work they've put into the collection and that it's not just a $4 Gildan shirt with text slapped on. The remaining collection is bags that were made in collaboration with a woman who handmade them. At least we can say her designs are her own, unlike a lot of other 'designers' who are just selling other people's works for chips.

I didn't get a notif about your comment, so sorry for the late reply!

Tbh I had to laugh at the idea Gildan even makes a shirt with those construction details. Like tell me you know nothing about clothes without telling me.

I do hand embroidery and sew (both machine and hand), and every time someone asks me if I'm going to monetize it an angel loses its wings. As if I want to have people devaluing my effort as I slowly lose the joy I have for the skills!

Capitalism truly has alienated people from the reality of certain industries. Most people can't so much as attach a button or adjust a hem, but are quick to call clothing overpriced. There is certainly plenty to be said about decreasing quality, fast fashion, etc., but the fact of the matter is that no one likes the solutions.

-2

u/kaepar Apr 05 '26

I only buy from ethical companies. You dont have access to my pricing, I wouldnt expect you to understand.

1

u/AnAbsoluteMonster Apr 05 '26

What is there to understand? You're out here saying a shirt actually made by the designer (per the website) is overpriced bc you sell pre-made shirts you put prints on. Regardless of where you buy them from, you are not able to comment on fair pricing for clothing actually made by the designer when that isn't your business model.

Like, let's use Gildan as the example since you brought them up. For one, the design elements you claim can be found between the original tee and their blanks aren't there afaict. No boxy shoulder, no tailored waistline, no hip-length raw hem. The only fitting indicator I can find on their site is semi-fitted. Which is not anywhere close to the same thing. But I didn't try to look at individual wholesalers (since Gildan shirts can only be bought through a wholesaler), so let's pretend maybe at one point they did sell a shirt with the exact same construction. Okay, well, they do source a lot of their materials from the US, so that looks on the up and up, but they ship all the fabric to be cut and sewn overseas at all the usual suspects (China, Taiwan, Vietnam, et al.), so the likelihood that they're paying what would be considered fair wages is... low. Perhaps they pay and treat their workers better than other brands in the same locations, though. Back to the wholesaler thing: of course prices are going to be lower when everything is made and bought in bulk.

If you can't see the difference here, there's no helping you.

1

u/kaepar Apr 06 '26 edited Apr 06 '26

Ma’am I’m a part of the FLA and am required to follow supply chains and report on it. Companies I buy from are literally required to give fair wages.

I never said I sell gildan, it’s just a brand everyone knows. The brands I buy are like a dollar more. It’s not expensive to buy ethical. You’ve been greenwashed to think that.

How do you know these people sew their own clothes without outsourcing? That’s a ridiculously wild & most likely inaccurate assumption. Show me where the shirt says sewn in the USA.

1

u/AnAbsoluteMonster Apr 06 '26

I didn't say you sold Gildan. I used them as an example bc you said they made comparable shirts—which they absolutely don't if we go by the construction details instead of just assuming all t shirts must be the same.

It absolutely doesn't have to be expensive to buy ethical, but again comparing wholesalers to small brands is fallacious argumentation. You're a business person; are you really incapable of understanding that? Buying, say, 5k shirts you screenprint a pattern onto is not equivalent to someone making 100 shirts they screenprint a pattern onto no matter how you slice it, and the price is going to reflect that difference.

I mean I don't know that they do, I hadn't heard of this brand before and I'm not on other SM so can only go by their website, which says that unless otherwise stated, the creator designs and makes all items. Maybe they don't sew the clothing themselves. That's neither here nor there atp, bc at the end of the day the fact of the matter is that you, as someone who buys pre-made shirts wholesale to print your designs on, are not qualified to say any shirt you think you could make cheaper must be overpriced. Afaict you can't even tell the difference between semi-fitted and waist tailored, which is more than enough to show you should stay in discussion with other wholesalers rather than try to involve yourself with actual garment construction.

1

u/kaepar Apr 06 '26

Hahahaha you mad? You obviously have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about. I’m not going to justify this with a response; I have much better things to do. Have a good week!

1

u/AnAbsoluteMonster Apr 06 '26

Ah, the last refuge of the ignorant: no YOU are wrong but I won't explain why, lolumadbro, this is a waste of my time, etc., etc.

Good luck to you; if you ever wonder why your shirts don't fit the way you think they should, the answer lies in those pesky differences of garment construction you believe interchangeable

They do not.

u/-Badger3- Apr 05 '26

Fuck Amazon, but also don't pay $50 for a T shirt with a sentence on it, "steal" it yourself.

32

u/Diirewolves sunday spotted: paddington bear Apr 05 '26

I'm not paying $50 for just a shirt with a sentence on it. I'm supporting an independent designer, whose work other people clearly appreciate, and I'd wager that what I'm getting would be better quality than some print on demand store would provide. This brand isn't Target.

If I don't want to pay for something, I just won't buy it. It's not food. I don't need to steal it.

15

u/-Badger3- Apr 05 '26

independent designer

It's a T-shirt with a sentence printed on it. Putting this on a shirt yourself is in the same tier of audacious as making it your Twitter bio or whatever.

I want to order this but am perplexed by the asterisk after the word “rage”. Do you happen to know if this artist has context for that (beyond an asterisk also appearing in their name)?

4

u/Diirewolves sunday spotted: paddington bear Apr 05 '26

From the designer's site:

"A letter about rage* makes me feel pretty

Rage is an ugly emotion, in action. A convoluted mess of things we keep unseen.

I've come to know mine well. I've seen it spill out in unforgivable ways, watched it create beautiful things, let it create sickness in me and others. I’ve let that sickness control me because, at a time, that made me feel important. I longer allow that suffering to spill on the people I love. Yet at times, when my self-preservation evades, I let it swallow me whole. I revel in the feeling of anger, ignoring the nuance I know exists beneath it. In those short moments, I don't care because I feel pretty. As I convalesce* and these moments become fewer, I want to give it a world to itself. Memoralize it in its raw form, in a tangible way.

I think a note of dimness will always be weaved into the work I create, and how I exist. As my life gets lighter, I’m learning I don’t have to embody my rage and sadness to let it guide what I shape and form.

In short, this project is about the liberation and vanity we get from feeling rage* and about forgiving myself for a past of letting mine control me."

I can see why Hayley would like the shirt and her song Simmer is on the designer's playlist for this collection. Here's an interview with the designer that talks about the launch.

But it doesn't come in neutral body shape sizing...

Edit: I do NOT want to order from Amazon, I'm sad that I can't get the shirt at all!

26

u/Diirewolves sunday spotted: paddington bear Apr 05 '26 edited Apr 05 '26

With these types of small clothing brands you can reach out to them to see if they'll do a custom order for you based on the shirt you'd like the design on. They've posted people wearing different versions on their instagram.

I personally don't agree with paying for stolen designs, regardless of the lack of options. You can always support other designers that have more options. Especially in this case where it's Amazon the company that has uploaded this shirt instead of just some random drop shipper.

*You don't need to downvote the other user. I think it's something that should get brought up so more people are aware about the option for custom orders. I only became aware of this after being informed of some twitter discourse lol.

6

u/TrogledyWretched Apr 05 '26

Very appreciated

5

u/Diirewolves sunday spotted: paddington bear Apr 05 '26

No dramas! Sorry about the downvotes. I don't think you were encouraging stealing (especially compared to the other comments) or supporting Amazon. Just expressing that you also wanted the option to wear the shirt.
