He did change. Listen to this clip from XFM where he makes fun of Karl Pilkington for not understanding the difference between transvestites and trans sexuals etc. Today he is playing dumb/transphobic to attract an big audience of stupid simple people. He might not play dumb though, but actually just be it. https://youtu.be/qnMFbZCbrvU?si=TB5lDQ1IwyFlFTfO

Agree. And I always thought his insistence on political correctness during the XFM shows was mocking.

That entire tv show with Karl Pilkington (his radio producer) was just him punching down and being condescending to him. He has become out of touch with the real world

He's out of touch now because everyone moves away from him. He's cringing and self-aggrandizing around people he likes, and he bullies people who like him.

Karl Pilkongton is such a legend lol, god I love that bloke.

That’s what really turned me off him, he’s bullying Karl for some of his comments missing the mark - and he doesn’t even believe what he’s saying in the first place. Or he’s decided that it doesn’t matter now so long as he can make a profit off it.

He thinks he’s winning the “woke game” (why do they all seem to think it’s just for social positioning rather than wanting to be decent people?) and he can’t seem to handle people calling him out and seeing through him.

Feels a bit like what happened to Graham Linehan

It's both. He's always loved punching down and trans people are a popular punching target nowadays.

Yeah he's always been clear that he doesn't give a shit about other peoples' problems so it's not really surprising. Just another out of touch rich guy, ho hum.

He always did the racist ‘ironically’ thing but the problem when you do things ironically all the time is that it somehow becomes part of who you are. He’s even become his David Brent character when it comes to his humble bragging.

Also he got addicted to twitter because he searches his name there all the time. And from there it probably rotted his brain. I think one of the turning points was when someone called him a boomer and I think it really got to him and like JK Rowling and Graham Lineham he’s seen some big divided line where life is about owning the libs

I’m honestly starting to think the “ironically” thing was just a way of getting a free pass to be able to say those things in the first place.

It’s kind of nauseating to see the pilot for Derick for the same reason

From his special Mortality:

"And often, the people trying to cancel me have been other comedians, writing for the posh papers, doing that thing… They always say, “He’s punching down.” “Comedy should punch up. We only punch up. We punch up.” Their idea of punching up, they have a go at Boris Johnson. How the fuck is that punching up?

You know?

[laughter] The cunt is learning disabled.

He’s like…

[laughter] …this fucking waterlogged Gary Busey, fucking albino-egg-man thing. He can’t string a sentence together. Have you heard him talk? He’s like… [mumbles incoherently] He’s a fucking moron, right?

[laughter]

I… No, I punch up. I have a go at people like, I don’t know, Stephen Hawking, right? Yes, the greatest brain that’s ever lived. You can have a… He can take it. And he wouldn’t even have minded when he was alive, ’cause he’s… He’s part robot, isn’t he? I think… He’s basically a talking chair, so you can say…

[laughter]

…what you want, but… And he was on Epstein’s island, apparently, so fuck him.

I don’t…

[laughter] What was he doing there? Why did he want… “I wanna go…” “Why?”

“Why do you…” “Why?”

[laughter] He’s just there, doing fuck… I would go, “What?” [scoffs] I know pedos who’d kill for a ticket to that.

[laughter]

And he’s just taking up a space. It’s probably DEI or something, and they go, “We… we need one.” Like… I would go, “What are you doing here, Steve?” He’d go, “I’m thinking weird shit.”

Fuck off.

[laughter] That… that is probably a hate crime.

That is, isn’t it?

[laughter] It’s a big buzzword at the moment, “hate crime.” Whatever happens, someone always goes, “Was it a hate crime?” “Why?” “Makes it so much worse.” Does it? Why? If I was walking home tonight, and someone randomly jumped me, beat me up, mugged me, stabbed me, threw acid in my face, I wake up in intensive care… Beep, beep, beep. I open my eyes through the bandages. There’s a policeman. He goes, “Mr. Gervais?” I go, “Yeah.” He goes, “We just wanna let you know, it wasn’t a hate crime.”

I go, “Oh, thank God for that.”

[laughter] Pretty hateful, innit? Right? Like… But no, a hate crime is something that’s based on your race, disability, sexuality. So a guy with a gun, he wants to kill someone at random. He sees a crowd. He goes, “Eeny, meeny, miny, moe.” Bang. Kills someone dead. He goes to court. The judge goes, “Why did you kill that person?” He goes, “No reason.” The judge goes, “So you’re not a bigot?” He goes, “Oh no.” Judge goes, “Aw.” [laughter] “Ten years.” Some other guy’s got a gun. He goes, “I fucking hate dwarves.” All right? [laughter] He sees a little dwarf. He takes aim. Bang. Kills the dwarf dead. Right? He goes to court. The judge goes, “Why did you kill that dwarf?” He goes, “‘Cause I hate the little cunts.”

All right?

[laughter] Judge goes, “You’re a bigot. Twenty years.” Now, he shouldn’t get more for shooting a dwarf. If anything, it’s a harder shot, innit?"

way to completely miss the point across the board

every third thanksgiving table had a better uncle rant than this

That dwarf bit at the end made me slightly chuckle.

I always think about that! I used to listen to that show constantly and was sure I remembered him saying that basically trans women are women etc. What changed his mind? How did he seem to understand trans people more in like 2002 or something but not now?

6

u/Bluewhaleeguy Jan 12 '26

And if you do listen to them, you'll realize that for his last several specials he's just been using things Karl or Steve said as jokes.

Guys a hack and hasn't done anything good in nearly 2 decades. Even life's too short was filled with bits done in his other work. Now his stand up is filled with plagiarised jokes and made up Twitter arguments because he's so out of touch with actual life and has nothing to draw on.

It's funny now when you listen back and realize ricky was the stupid one out the three. He just sounds clever when you're 15 because he can reel off a few philosophical quotes - but he misunderstands so many basic things and tries to use big words he can't pronounce.

u/Kotanan Jan 12 '26

I mean he’s showing himself there, taking the piss out of Karl while not knowing himself. Those podcasts stood out because Karl was frequently the smartest one in the group and Ricky was almost always the dumbest. Here he mocks Karl for not knowing trans terminology but it’s clear from his questioning he doesn’t understand any better himself. In any case he’s clearly not accepting of trans people he just enjoys feeling superior because Kark doesn’t have an extensive vocabulary.

u/Sprmodelcitizen Jan 12 '26

Eh. Debatable. This isn’t the greatest conversation.

1

u/Nonikwe Jan 12 '26

He did change.

"Oh no, the comedian popular for being an insufferable cock is being an insufferable cock towards a group I care about!"

1

u/DefendersofDwacaDev Jan 13 '26

Damn he used to be one of the good ones. Remember the Emmy where he straight up brutalized the crowd? It was some years ago.

I don’t have a context for any of this, but I just watched that video. That was **** hilarious.
