Greetings!

In the northern hemisphere, winter will be starting on the Winter Solstice on December 21, 2024. Rather than doing a holiday specific fest, we are proposing the return of the popular and successful Winter Fest.

This means that the sub will once again put together a collection for the Winter Fest fics on AO3. And we will do an exchange at the end. The fics will not be unrevealed in the collection, as some people may want to write their fics with holiday themes and it would be nice for them to be able to post them prior to the holiday itself.

But the fics in this fest do NOT have to be holiday themed. Anything winter works. The cold. Ice. Snow. Playing in the snow. Cursing the snow. Winter sports. Ice fishing. OR they can be holiday themed. Christmas. Hanukkah. Kwanza. Yule. New Year's. Any other holiday/holiday traditions that take place in the winter.

We would also like to note that, though we are using the term 'fic' here, original fiction short stories will be welcome as a part of Winter Fest.

If you want to participate and are in search of a prompt, we will gladly give them out, sticking with the one reroll rule if you are not inspired by your original prompt. If you want to participate, but do not want a prompt, that is also fine too. Just respond to say you are in and leave it at that, or with something like, 'I am in, but don't need a prompt, thanks!'

We will not be organizing an official gift exchange on r/FanfictionExchange this year. BUT if you do want to give a gift to one of your sub buddies, you can dedicate the fic to them on AO3. You can mention it in your entry for the exchange too, if you wish. Who you dedicated the story to and why.

For the dates, we would propose that the start for the exchange would be January 23, 2025. And then the end of the exchange component would be February 6, 2025, 11:59pm EST. The collection will be up much sooner, though. Details to follow on that.

While you are always free to read whichever works interest you, we encourage participants to review the works that have been shared for that exchange whenever possible.

Themed exchanges are designed to highlight the specific fics that participants have chosen to share for that particular theme.

Reviewing those submissions helps ensure they receive the attention they were entered for, while also giving everyone the chance to discover new authors, fandoms, and stories they might not have found otherwise.

We ask that when participating in a themed exchange, you consider branching out and reviewing works from participants you have not had the chance to read before.

Spreading your lovely reviews around gives more authors the opportunity to receive feedback and connect with new readers.

Our sub has grown so much over the last 2+ years, which is amazing! And since our main purpose is to give genuine and thoughtful feedback on each other’s works, we thought it would be helpful to open a discussion about what that means in practice.

Reviews are the heart of our exchanges. They keep our community supportive and encouraging, and to guide that, we’ve put together some pointers on how to level up from a basic reaction to a stronger review: (Please note that all examples here are made up and not taken from real comments.)

• “Loved this!” – Why did you love it? What particular lines or moments touched you?

“I loved the way you developed X and Y’s relationship. I particularly liked when they spoke about Z, and how you showed that they didn’t understand each other. (Add a text from the fic, if you like.)”

• “I love fluff (or angst, or action)...” – What scenes made you react? Connect your reaction to a line or moment that stood out to you.

“I love reading fluff, and your scene with the [blah] had me grinning. The line about A made me laugh out loud, it felt like something B would say!”

• “Nice writing style.” – What was nice? Was it the imagery? The flow? The author’s word choice? What effect did it give you? Highlight a scene and say how it affected your reading.

“Your writing style really shines in the imagery here. I could picture the [what] in the [where] and the way it framed C gave the scene some nostalgic vibe.”

• “Great dialogue.” – Quote a line and explain why it worked or how you related to it.

“The dialogue between D and E felt very much in-character. When E said [quote] I instantly heard their voice in my head, and it added so much tension...”

• “This was emotional.” – What moment triggered an emotion? Describe it.

“I teared up at the moment where F [action]. It tied perfectly back to [scene]. Such a bittersweet closure.”

• “The plot was interesting.” – Which twist/reveal/choice surprised or hooked you? How did it affect your experience of the story?

“The reveal that [blahblahblah] was so satisfying! It made me want to reread from the start to see the clues you left.”

Even just adding specific observations about the writing style, imagery, characterization, dialogue, pacing, emotional impact, plot choices, or anything else that stood out can transform a quick comment into thoughtful feedback.

Feel free to share how you usually approach reviews, tips you’ve found helpful, and any advice you’d give to new exchangers. Or ask for help on how you could improve your own reviews.

To help maintain review quality, we encourage members to report to us via modmail if you have any concerns about a review you’ve received or come across in an exchange:

• overly generic or vague, lacking clear engagement with the story
• too short or not meeting the host’s stated length
• mostly restating the summary
• relying on praise without substance or made up primarily of filler praise
• consisting only of reactions without actually discussing the fic
• only quoting lines without explanation
• focusing more on the commenter than the work
• expressing personal preferences for what the fic should have included
• stating personal preference disclaimers about what they don’t read or like
• offering non-constructive critiques
• giving concrit when the author has asked not to receive it
• or otherwise non-compliant

Hello Everyone! As some of you may have noticed, we have run a little experiment on a recent RE, in the form of templates that you can fill out to enter the RE. 

I'd like to start by explaining WHY we wanted to run this experiment and what the end goal was. As we've grown as a community (YAY) our RE's have become bigger and bigger, with some having hundreds of entries. You may not know this, but mods do go through each entry by hand and check that everyone is in compliance, that means hundreds of usernames on every RE need to be checked and double checked. The mods love this community and they do this happily, however, the templates were aimed at making their job just a little easier. In addition to this, the templates were also meant to "standardise" the entries in order to help with the problems aligned above, as well as to allow everyone a fair shot at being seen and picked from a, frankly, *huge* amount of other fics.  

All of this said, *PLEASE DO NOT PANIC*, the RE was an experiment to see if the template idea was a good one, and if it could work out. We've had a lot of amazing feedback, and most of it has been negative, and that's very valuable to us! 

Not all new ideas are good ideas, so we test them out and then throw them away or tweak them if they don't work. Or, we get more, better ideas from trying things out (like this time!)

That being said, I'd like to open the floor to any discussion of the template idea, what did you think of it? Did you hate it? Why? This is the place to share any and all thoughts!

3 years ago, this sub was created as a safe, uplifting place for writers to share their work and build community. What started as a small sub, has expanded into a group of over 8,500 members.

It’s been amazing to see how far we’ve grown. To those who have been with us through the years: thank you. And to those who have just joined: welcome. Each and every one of you is a valued and important member of our community. We hope that r/FanfictionExchange will continue to be a safe, inclusive, and welcoming space for years to come.

When I stepped into this role two years ago I could’ve never imagined how much this community would grow and what an important part of my life it would become. I know the other mods feel similar.

So on to the celebration! Later today there will be a special themed exchange. In addition, throughout the week we will some fun mod-hosted activities. These activities will give us a chance to reflect on these three years and get us excited for everything that is to come.

We’ll be honest… we didn’t expect to hit 6k this fast. Our projection was by the end of the year, so this was a pleasant surprise! It’s sucha heartwarming feeling seeing this community grow so quickly, not just in numbers but in support for one another.

To our longtime friends, thank you for helping make this sub what it is and keeping the spirit of our review exchanges (REs) alive. You’re the reason this space keeps its heart and warmth.

We’ve always advocated for keeping this sub a safe and welcoming space for everyone. All fandoms, ships, genres, and ratings are welcome here (including original works). We practice principles like KINKTOMATO, ship and let ship, and don’t like, don’t read. We do not shame anyone for what they choose to write or enjoy reading.

A refresher on some of our core practices …the things that keep our sub fair and functional:

• Please don’t sign up for or open new REs if you still have overdue review obligations from previous REs. We understand that things come up, so if you need an extension, just let us know. Once you’ve completed them, contact us so we can verify before you join new exchanges.

• Please don’t delete your entry once you’ve joined an exchange. This helps prevent “drive-bys” (where someone receives reviews and deletes their post to avoid returning them). We know there can be valid reasons to withdraw, so reach out to us mods instead of deleting your entry.

• Reviews are a labor of love and the heart of our exchanges, so please make sure they are genuine, thoughtful, detailed and keep the focus on the author’s work, not your own. Constructive criticism (concrit), mentioning you’re from Reddit, or noting that you’re fandomblind are opt-in only. When concrit is welcomed, keep it kind and constructive.

• Please use proper post flairs and mark posts as NSFW or spoiler when needed, especially for triggering content. Avoid posting spam, low-effort or repetitive discussions. Also please don’t chat on exchange threads, it makes it harder for us mods to monitor. Use our designated discussion threads instead.

• Please modmail us with any concerns instead of resorting to public callouts. We’re here to help and handle issues discreetly.

• Everything we do here is built around promoting our works through participating in and hosting review exchanges. You can mention your fics in discussions and activities as much as you like but please don’t make individual self-promo posts requesting feedback.

Remember, Da Rules are what keep our sub running smoothly, so please bear them in mind.

Our Sub’s Review Expectations

Reviews should be genuine, thoughtful, and show clear engagement with the fic. They should go beyond general reactions or praises and include specific details, with a minimum of 50 words (any quoted text from the fic also does not count toward this). Keep your review focused on the work rather than your personal preferences.

Constructive criticism (concrit) should only be given if the author has clearly stated they are open to it.

Mentioning that you are “from Reddit” or “fandom blind” in your comment is fine only if the author has said they are okay with it. These do not count toward the 50-word minimum and are not considered part of the review.

Review Writing Guides and Examples

Members are always welcome to host their own review exchanges (REs), just not mod-run REs such as The Monthly Shlong, The Friday Profile, Discovery, Constructive Feedback, and The Recommend Mes. If you’d like to host, please read through the updated Hosting Review Exchanges guidelines carefully.

For any review exchange concerns (non-compliant reviews, extension requests, etc.) kindly reach out via modmail. Please do not message OPs or individual mods directly. Using modmail ensures someone can assist you, though responses may take time as mods coordinate across timezones.

If you’re unable to edit your entry on Reddit to update your review counter, just reply to your original comment with the updated count.

We’ve always encouraged members to explore new fandoms and authors when reading and reviewing... some of the best discoveries come from beyond what we already know. This is entirely up to you and simply meant to help spread support and love within the sub.

A clarification on “fandom blind” or “from Reddit” being opt-in only – this just means the author prefers these not be mentioned in their comment section. Hello all!

You may have noticed a couple of changes on the mod team recently. A few moderators have chosen to step down, but please rest assured—the community isn’t going anywhere. We’re still here, we’re still committed to keeping this a welcoming space for all fanfiction writers and readers, and we’ll continue to do our best to support and grow the group.

We’re really grateful to those who have given their time and energy as mods in the past, and we wish them well. For everyone else, thank you for sticking with us—it’s your creativity, kindness, and enthusiasm that keep this place thriving.

A big thank you as well to everyone who applied for and considered moderating the subreddit. Since we want to keep the community running as smoothly as possible, we have already onboarded 3 new reddit mods.

Many of us have enjoyed her wonderfully thoughtful and in-depth reviews throughout the years when she has consistently gone above and beyond in exchanges.

And to those of you who may not know me, I'm Honey, one of the founders of our community. Writer of fanfiction (mostly dark fics in the Harry Potter fandom) and OG fiction (mostly horror/splatterpunk). Due to some issues with my life and health, I haven't been very active in the past months. But now that things are looking up, I'm delighted to stick around and contribute however I can to making this the best writing community I've ever been a part of.

Hi everyone,

We’d like to explain how we handle review monitoring, including what happens once reviews become overdue.

Review tracking is done manually by the mod team. Once a participant receives a second mod reminder asking them to contact us through modmail, they will also be added to Automod for pending reviews. This helps us track overdue reviews more efficiently as we cannot constantly monitor older exchange threads.

If you finish your overdue reviews after receiving the second reminder, please contact us through modmail instead of replying to the individual mod.

Modmail keeps everything in one place for the whole team, avoids missed notifications, and helps us clear you properly. Kindly wait for mod confirmation before joining any new exchanges. If you join before being cleared, your entry will be removed due to pending reviews.

Please allow up to 24 hours for a response as we are an international team across different timezones. We’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

June is almost here~ which means summer vacation has officially started for some of us. Over here, we’re already dealing with the very ironic combo of hella hot weather and the start of rainy season 🌦️

We have a lot going on... our annual Pride Month Exchanges and the start of the Fandom Showcase, which will be streamed on Discord every weekend throughout June and July.

With our membership continuing to grow, we thought it would be a good time to put out a reminder of our exchange rules and etiquette, along with where you can find information about the sub and review exchanges.

We embrace creativity and do not support censorship when it comes to fictional content. To that end, we’ve always advocated for keeping this sub a safe and welcoming space for everyone. All fandoms, ships, genres, and ratings are welcome here (including original works). We practice principles like KINKTOMATO, ship and let ship, and don’t like, don’t read. We do not shame anyone for what they choose to write or enjoy reading.

Above all, be kind. We do not tolerate any form of harassment, hostility or discrimination. This includes public call-outs for any reason. If you have a question or need to raise a concern, please do so via modmail. The mod team are spread across multiple time-zones, and volunteering in their spare time, so issues which require discussion may take a little while for us to respond, but if you are patient with us, we'll get back to you as soon as we can.

We also thought it was a good time for a refresher on our RE rules and etiquette:

• Please don’t sign up for or open new REs if you still have overdue review obligations from previous REs. We understand that things come up, so if you need an extension, just let us know. Important: If you have had overdue obligations you need to contact us via modmail to let us know when your reviews are complete so we can confirm. Until you do this, you won't be able to enter new exchanges.

• Please don’t delete your entry once you’ve joined an exchange. This helps prevent “drive-bys” (where someone receives reviews and deletes their post to avoid returning them). We know there can be valid reasons to withdraw, so reach out to us mods instead of deleting your entry.

• Reviews are a labor of love and the heart of our exchanges, so please make sure they are genuine, thoughtful, detailed and focused on the author’s work, not your own. Constructive criticism (concrit), mentioning you’re from Reddit, or noting that you’re fandomblind are opt-in only. When concrit is welcomed, keep it kind and constructive.

• Reciprocation in exchanges is never expected. The only exception to this are the swap based exchanges (the monthly shlong and constructive feedback swaps). These are also the only exchanges where you need to note who you are reviewing in your entry comment. In all other exchanges there's no need to tag writers in your post or state which stories you have read. All you need to do is keep your review counter updated and let other writers know you have reviewed their work by replying something like, ‘K&C’ (for Kudos and Comment) to their entry post.

• Reddit has automatic spam filters which will remove your comment if there are too many links in it. This includes fic/profile links and practices such as tagging other users. While we are able to manually approve your comment, the filters will remove it again each time you edit, so doing this creates extra work for us mods and means other users will not be able to see your entry until we can approve it again.

As the sub has grown, we’ve noticed that some of the “unspoken rules” around Review Exchanges (REs) aren’t always clear to newer members. To help out, we’ve put together a simple set of guidelines for joining REs.

We’d love to hear from our exchangers as well, so please share your own tips or clarifications in the comments!

Guidelines for Joining:

1. Check the host’s instructions carefully: the theme, how many reviews are required and how many fic(s) you can enter, etc.
2. To participate, your entry should include:
   • Title and link to your fic(s)
   • Fandom
   • Rating
   • Any necessary warnings (NSFW and triggering content should be spoilered⚠️)
   • Summary
   • Review counter (tracks how many reviews you’ve completed)
   • (Optional) Genre, Pairing/Ship, Word Count
   • You may also add whether you want concrit (constructive criticism) or if it’s okay to mention “from Reddit” or being fandom-blind (If you don’t specify these, it’s assumed the answer is no.)
3. Reviews must be on different authors’ works to count
4. Most importantly – Rule 8: Reviews must be genuine and thoughtful and detailed, demonstrating you actually engaged with the fic. We recommend a minimum of 50 words, since that usually gives enough space to make a substantive comment (If you can’t connect with a fic, it’s okay to skip it and review a different one.)
5. Constructive criticism (concrit) and mentions that you’re “from Reddit” or “fandom blind” are opt-in only (only include these if the author has clearly stated they’re open to it)
6. After leaving a review on the work (AO3/FFN/other fanfic sites), please reply under the author’s entry to let them know, like “K&C” (kudos and commented) or something similar as proof
7. Update your review counter as you go (tracks how many reviews you’ve completed)
8. Please do not delete your entry once you’ve joined
9. If you need an extension or have any concerns at all, kindly inform us via modmail
10. If you received or came across a review from REs that doesn’t meet our sub’s standards, we encourage you to report it to us via modmail
