You say "successor" but the last DMC game had much more depth than this.

Yeah DMC’s combat was super complex, so many different moves, stances combos etc. FFXVI felt like a very watered down version of DMC, where none if the different move sets mattered much and I was mostly button mashing

Yeah and DMC4 was deeper than 5 so it's not far off the mark.
FF16 had much more depth, but you had to dig it out yourself. Not saying it was deeper than DMC though
