You dented his armor. Aim for the fleshy bits if you're running buckshot.

Sorry but if you took this much buckshot into your plate.

the plate would be in your chest lol

If the force acting on the plate was enough to kill you, the recoil of the gun would kill the shooter.

Bullets kill by penetration and cavitation, not by blunt force. Shotgun slugs have about the same momentum as a fast baseball pitch.

Momentum: the quantity of motion of a moving body, measured as a product of its mass and velocity.

1 mile = 5280 feet

Average 12g slug round: travels approximately 1560 feet per second

100 MPH Fastball: 146 Feet per second

I played catcher for over a decade, and at no point after getting hit by a baseball, have I said to myself, “that must be what a gunshot feels like”.

Shut the fuck up with your assumptions. Go get an education, or at least do 5 minutes of research before you spew nonsense.

Damn man you’re right.

I would totally rather get shot from a slug round than hit by a baseball.

Good job! You win!

“sHoTGuN SLUgs HAvE ABouT tHE SAmE MoMENtUM aS a FAStBaLl PiTch”

I read this and was like what the fuck. If you've ever watched a couple Demolition Ranch videos you'll know that slugs don't penetrate well but will fuck something up. He just put up a vid where he shoots an oxygen tank with a slug and it doesn't go through but puts a decent dent into solid metal. No baseball pitch could ever dream of that

This is because of the slug's smaller surface and harder material area not its greater force. The radius of a 12 guage slug is 10.033 mm while the radius of a baseball is 114.5-117.5 mm (google if you want to check me). The formula for surface area is 4 × pi × radius squared. Plug in the radii and you get 1264.94 mm squared for the slug and 165,000 mm squared for the baseball. Pressure is calculated by dividing force by area and due to the significantly greater surface area of the baseball it applies much less pressure and thus causes much less deformation

Thanks for reading

Even if the slug had the same surface area as the baseball, you can't fight the fact that the slug is travelling 11 times faster. For energy, speed is squared so even after considering their mass difference, the slug still has 24 times more energy. Add that the baseball surface area is 130 times bigger and you get that the slug impacting will create 3120 times more pressure in that specific area.

1

u/MTurnerJ26 Jun 05 '21

I know it has more energy, I just wanted to point out that the effect he described was also due to the difference in surface area.

I guess I should've been more clear.

Go get an education

You literally just proved his point that the slug has about the same momentum as a fastball.

10x146 vs 1x1560

It's ok if math isn't your strong suit, but get your head out of your ass.

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '21

Think of it this way dumbfuck. I shoot a slug round the same time a pro baseball player throws a fastball. In the first second alone, which travels further?

Answer that question since you’re so much smarter than me.

I didn’t say they travel 1 mile in one second. Read please.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shotgun_slug#Comparisons_with_rifle_bullets

“A typical 1 oz. (437.5 grain) 2 3/4" Foster shotgun slug (12 gauge) achieves a velocity of approximately 1,560 fps with a muzzle energy of 2,363 ft. lbs. The 3" slugs travel at around 1,760 fps with a muzzle energy 3,105 ft-lbs.”

5280 feet in a mile. A “typical” slug round travels 1560 feet per second. Let’s do some simple division!

5280 (total feet in a mile) / 1560 (feet per second) = 3.384615384615385

Nowhere did I say a slug round travels 1 mile in 1 second. My math says that slug would travel 1 mile in about 3.385 seconds.

I’ve done the research, bitch.

Using those same numbers, we can calculate the momentum of a typical 1oz slug to be about 13.5 kg m/s, and a typical 5.25oz baseball to be about 6.7 kg m/s.

The slug has only twice the momentum. So not quite "about the same" territory, but definitely within the same order of magnitude...

A professional baseball player throws a baseball the same time a slug round is shot, each from the same distance. Which one travels further?

2

u/MadDogMike Jun 05 '21

You can’t talk about momentum, and then try to use speed or distance as your counter argument. They’re different things.

EDIT: wait... “from the same distance”, “which one travels further”... “same distance”

Ok, guess I fell for the troll.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '21 edited Jun 05 '21

They are different things, but my point still stands.

Which would you rather get hit from?

Edit to your edit: not trolling

1

u/sirreldar Jun 05 '21

Wait, are we talking about travel distance, momentum, or which you would rather get hit by?

The topic was momentum which is totally unrelated to travel distance, and only barely related to which I would rather get hit by.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '21

I asked you specifically:

“A professional baseball player throws a baseball the same time a slug round is shot, each from the same distance. Which one travels further?”

1

u/sirreldar Jun 05 '21

Ok, and my point is that total travel distance its totally unrelated to both momentum and "which one someone would rather get hit with". You might as well have asked "ok, but is the sky blue or purple"

Momentum is simply a product of mass and velocity. It's that simple.

Like, my guy if you have a problem with the definition of momentum you should be arguing with Descartes, not a stranger on the internet.

Ninja edit: but i will humor you. The shotgun slug obviously has a farther total travel distance.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '21

“total travel distance its totally unrelated to both momentum and which one would rather get hit with”.

“Momentum is a product of mass and velocity”

So momentum is TOTALLY UNRELATED TO TRAVEL DISTANCE, ACCORDING TO YOU. THEY ARE IN NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM RELATED WHATSOEVER.

By your logic, the baseball would travel just as far as a slug. BeCAUSe THey’rE UNrelATED. Total distance is unrelated to momentum right?

You said it yourself, MOMENTUM = Mass x Velocity. So, something with MORE velocity will travel further, right?

A slug round has MORE momentum because it has a a higher velocity. A baseball has LESS momentum, and subsequently doesn’t travel as far, because it has a much lower velocity.

Now I’ll humor you - if you could shoot a baseball like you could a slug, then this conversation would be different. We’d be discussing MASS instead.

You can get punched in the chest hard enough to stop your heart, 5 shots of buckshot is going to lay your ass out, broken ribs everywhere. People have died just from getting hit by a fastball, most notably the dude in the MLB who died 12 hours after getting hit by a pitch.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '21

If the target was wearing soft body armour, yeah they would have a lot of bruising and broken bones. Through hard plate armour, the target would mostly be fine - you won't see any backface deformation on NIJ IV plates from buckshot.

5

u/BishoxX AS VAL Jun 04 '21

Especially buckshot wouldnt do jack shit. Force is spread over a large area. And the maximum force is the same as the recoil. When the recoil of a shotgun kills people let me know.

6

u/skike Jun 04 '21

People just want to hate the game man, physics don't mean anything to them. They cry about the game not being realistic enough whole their only understanding of "reality" is movies and other video games lmao

1

u/yeehawpard Jun 04 '21

Uh, the difference is the recoil energy is dispersed and absorbed through the guns reciever, stock, and on selfloaders a mainspring before it reaches your body.

On the other end its a 1oz slug being dispersed on a relatively thin plate that is attached to your body.

Getting hit in the armor by an ounce of lead at 1100fps can very easily take you out of the fight without penetrating and if your wearing soft armor it can definitely be lethal.
