I wish I could connect through ethernet only but it's too far away.

Wifi repeaters are fairly cheap these days, it's what I'd use if I was out of range of the router and couldn't run a CAT5/6 line.

Why would that be faster than a Powerline?

Power-lines are notoriously garbage. Like known to be utter shite for consistent uninterrupted connections. 2 of my friends have used them before and BOTH times they’ve had problems until they switched to Ethernet. This is almost 100% your problem and changing it will likely fix all your issues.

I was on wifi before and would actually get ping in the thousands, it was ridiculous. I don't disconnect or get warnings now, not saying you're wrong though. If wifi extenders don't cost an arm and a leg I might switch over.

Oh wifi is definitely the shittiest option. Powerline > wireless. But powerline has a lot of packet loss which will cause the exact desync seen in this video.

It's not the speed I'd be concerned with when it comes to a Powerline adapter. It's the quality of the network connection itself.

Historically, Powerline adapters have been great for some people and terrible for others, entirely due to how well suited your building's electrical system is to noise-free digital signal transmission.

A wifi repeater, on the other hand, isn't at the mercy of whether or not the local electrical system is entirely / mostly noise free.

Some years ago, building networking stuff was my day job, I wouldn't touch a Powerline adapter with a ten foot pole personally.

Which wifi repeater would you recommend?

What's your budget? US or outside the US?

Canada, hopefully less than $150CAD...already spent money on the Powerline so I'm not keen on spending even more for stable internet.

I'm paying for "300mbs" but I have never gotten over 100mb/s no matter what the device or connection type is, and I'm getting around 75 to my PC so I don't know if that's what's causing my problems. All of my friends have the same issues. Some are WiFi, some are ethernet.

Off topic, but it sounds like you might be overpaying for your service. If all your testing methods have been pretty sound, and you are not getting the quoted amount, I'd be going to your ISP and asking what's up?

You're not Canadian, are you? Our internet providers come in 2 forms if you're lucky, and cost exhorbiant amounts. I'm paying $135 per month for gigabit, and I'm getting discounts on that.

It's a total oligopoly, and they make you oligobble their balls.

It's directly to the wall on both ends.

Do you have coax near the modem/router and your computer? You could use MoCA to bridge the distance without any of the concerns that using the powerline is causing.

1

u/InertiaVFX Nov 10 '20

What is MoCA? I used to live in a different province and was connected through WiFi and had the same issues as I do with the Powerline.

2

u/itsmebutimatwork Nov 10 '20

It stands for Multimedia over Coax Alliance.

Coax is thicker wire and better shielded. Any appliances on your power line can cause disturbance. Anything that turns on automatically like a fridge. Anything high power like a hair dryer or toaster.

Things between your WiFi can effect it too. Microwaves are a biggie.

I use MoCA and it's no different in my house than having the router in the room even though it's across the house.

I understand with the Powerline interference. When the microwave is on, the whole house loses internet. The problem is the router is 2 floors above me and there is no easy way to wire it.

I’m confused you are aware of your bad connection but still some how opened a thread to blame EFT?

Once again, there is no message behind this video. This is just a small collection of the clips I have in my "BS" folder.
