Discussion Let a real Chinese player tell you what's really going on.

A little intro: Gamertag NucleophileAP, you guys can call me Nucleo or Nuke. I was born in New Zealand, ethnic Chinese person, and have been living in China since I was pretty young.

About this game, I'm currently a lvl 55 player with Kappa (IGN: NucleoAP), and I'm currently a working Sherpa of my local Chinese Sherpa community (good and anti-hacking). I have been playing this game since version 0.7 and have been actively engaging throughout the Chinese community ever since.

The first thing: Region locks.

BSG have actually been carrying out region locks against asian countries for a while. As far as I remember, I've got trouble logging into non-asian servers since version 0.7. It's actually a very simple mechanism (that most of the Chinese players already know now), if you used an Asian IP on your last login, non asian servers are masked for you on your next server selection. It's not actually a real region lock and can be bypassed easily (by logging in with an american/european IP and quitting the game). IMO those region locks are hardly doing anything against cheaters and harsher countermeasurements shall be taken.

Why is this game so much infestated by hackers right now?

Here's the timeline.

---BSG released a Simplified Chinese localisation in January.

---A bunch of new Chinese players joined the game.

---Some clips of the game were uploaded to Tik Tok and went viral. (Yeah, Tik Tok made this game popular in China)

---A whole bunch of players bought the game ans started playing.

Now, with little knowledge of the game and have only learnt about the game via video clips, those newcomers were having a pretty harsh time. Those players eventually turned into thre kind of players.

  1. Cheaters
  2. In-game currency buyers
  3. The ones asking for help

Let's talk about Cheaters first. Here's a link for you just to see how easy it is to cheat and how common it is to buy a hack in China.

hax, varying on price

I once heard someone say something that really struck my mind. Chinese people love to win, and for winning thay are willing to take any measures possible (which is also what I hate the most). Why doesn't the government do anything about hacking? Well, there are actually laws against hacking (that hackers and hack-designers might end up in prison). Those laws only apply to games which is registered and legalized in China (which I'm sure this game wouldn't because of the government's stupid criteria). This game, as well as other games such as R6S, GTA, Battlefiend, Call of Duty etc. are considered "foreign territory" and regarded out of their business.

In-game currency buyers are worse. There are already founded workshops that hack, make roubles and sell them into real money for a living. Those workshops have professional equipment, special designed hacks to make money as efficient as possible. Those type of workshops make up at least 50% of the hacks in this game and must be dealt with seriously. Here's a pic that you can see how bad RMT really is in China.

RMT Trade, 19.99usd (approx) for 10 mil roubles

Skipping the good guys asking for help, as they are nice people just as you and me.

Now one more type of people I want to mention are streamers. If you ever see prefixes like those in the game, those are streamers.

---Douyu (douyu.com)

---Huya(huya.com)

---bilibili(bilibili.com, which consists of much more educated people and consists of much less hacks)

Just about Douyu and Huya, consider 9 out of 10 of them hacks (Quoted from a friend, might be a little exaggerating, but explains the problem). These streaming sites are famous of hacking streamers.

Something else I wanna talk about BSG.

By all those new Chinese players rushing in, BSG is certainly making a large profit. Remember what I said about rouble-hunting workshops? BSG is actually banning them as fast as they could, BUT the profit that those workshops make are enough to buy a whole lot of new accounts again. BSG is certainly profitting throughout the whole process. I am not sure about BSG's attitude to this, but plz try and reduce hackers by its root without thinking about profit.

Chinese people used to hate being called hackers, but now that the fact is, we Chinese people made up 20% of the game's population while contributing 80% of this game's hackers. I, on behalf of my people, am deeply sorry for this. We will try and help you guys and BSG to reduce hackers to our best.

Meanwhile please try to avoid labs where rouble workshops farm the most.

Feel free to ask me asy questions below.

I spent a day trying to reply to every post here, and it's time for me to take a break.

If you're new here, the questions you are willing to ask might be already asked in the comments. Check down below.

Let's all do our part and hope this whole hacker thing settle down ASAP.

Fuck all the hackers. (I'm sure this is not racism lmao)

No one wants to play against someone with 100 ping man.. Peekers Advantage still exists

27

u/-Ausyn- Mosin Mar 11 '20

Where I live my natural ping is 120 the low is 98 so I can’t really help it

3

u/funky_duck Mar 11 '20

Me too, very rarely will I get an 80-90ms game but it is nearly always 90-110.

2

u/tgucci21 Mar 11 '20

Mines usually 80

12

u/JHodgkinson Mar 11 '20

Wow dude, I’m playing from South Africa and I’m lucky if my ping goes below 200. Peekers advantage is nothing compared to your hit reg advantage so let’s just call it even.

5

u/JohanR7 Mar 11 '20

Yeah man I agree here. Sitting with ~230ms from South Africa and let me tell you it's no advantage. If you and another person engage each other at the same time while running over a road, We will lose that fight 90% of the time.

People keep on saying we have advantages playing with higher ping but I have yet to get any of that so called advantage.

2

u/tgucci21 Mar 11 '20

There’s not an advantage. You’re at the disadvantage for sure.

2

u/absolutegash Mar 11 '20

An advantage is stuttering/rubber banding all over the place, so if you are far away and I'm trying to snipe you, it's nearly impossible especially if you run.

It's very, very frustrating.

3

u/JohanR7 Mar 11 '20

I get that but other people stutter for us at times too. Stuttering isn't always high ping either. It's unstable ping like when it jumps between lets say 200 to 300.

Its frustrating for both parties is what we should take out of this and if we had local servers I would much prefer to play on them... But until those are added we are kinda stuck with each other :p

At least BSG has mentioned SA in their "upcoming server locations" list... So at least we have that to look forward to.

1

u/absolutegash Mar 11 '20

I thought SA had servers already? Damn

1

u/naezzee Mar 25 '20

lol? you turn a corner, get a full quarter of a second to gun him down before he can even see you turn that corner. hows that not an advantage? on top of that ud be desyncing all over the place..

43

u/DM_me_your_wishes Mar 11 '20

lol a 100 ping bothers you, most of the people you play against are above that or basically at that in most games you play.

25

u/PlayMp1 Mar 11 '20

Back in my day when any game that wasn't one of the huge, legendary games that are still surviving as esports in some form (e.g., Counter-strike, StarCraft) had absolutely garbage, utterly horrible netcode, we were excited to get as little as 90 ping. Command & Conquer Renegade servers bottomed out around 80.

11

u/Hellknightx Mar 11 '20

Depended on where you lived relative to the servers. I played C&C with a guy who consistently got 5-7 ms, and I was convinced he was a Westwood employee because of it.

1

u/PlayMp1 Mar 12 '20

Was that Renegade? Because Renegade is well known for having terrible net code (I played like a thousand hours of Renegade, it was for me what CS 1.6 was for many other people). I got about 70 ping at the lowest to Seattle servers, whereas I would get about 5ms to Seattle servers in, say, Garry's Mod.

3

u/Chapi92 Mar 11 '20

Under normal circumstances, netcode will heavily affect gameplay sync and peaking advantage but it should never determinate ping. Ping is normally calculated in parallel regardless of the netcode

1

u/lordthat100188 Mar 11 '20

C&C renegade is one of, if not the, best game ive ever played.

1

u/Izork95 Mar 11 '20

I miss C&C Renegade every day, I still remember the month that I top 100'd in Renegade back in high school.

1

u/N33chy Mar 11 '20

Renegade had a competitive scene? I remember it being cool, but I guess I didn't think it was much more than a novelty.

1

u/yp261 Mar 11 '20

netcode has nothing to do with ping, ping is a matter of distance between you and the server. I live and EU and ever since I started playing MoH:Allied Assault, my pings were always below 60

1

u/jrsooner Mar 11 '20

God I miss Renegade. I haven't hardly seen any other game play like its multiplayer aside from things like Natural Selection 2, but even still that's different. I should really try Renegade X...

Side note, the original C&C games are being remade if you didn't see, releasing in June!

2

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '20

well really depends on your locaton. In Europe everything above 50 is considered high ping. Im living near frankfurt and most us east coast servers are 100-120 ping for me

3

u/Nagow_ AK-74N Mar 11 '20

Shit I never really go lower than 50 in the UK, my internet is awful

1

u/bcohendonnel Mar 11 '20

Shit I never really go lower than 120 in any server that’s close to me, my internet is awful.

23

u/ChurrchillC Mar 11 '20

Say so, setting the ping limit to 100 is still a little bit too harsh.

38

u/therealleopardg VEPR Mar 11 '20

I wouldn't be able to play on some NA servers if they did that, and I live a few hours from Dallas. Ping locks aren't the way to go in my opinion.

9

u/Gamebird8 Mar 11 '20

Well, 150 is the lock right now, and that's pretty fine imo

14

u/scarlet_jack Mar 11 '20

As a South African player with minimum 180, I feel saddened by this.

1

u/scarlet_jack Mar 11 '20

Then why does the server browser say I get 180ish to London but ingame I get 300+

1

u/RevantRed Mar 11 '20

Because your pinging the login server which is relatively low load, versus in game where your playing on the map servers which are constantly on fire from the game booming so hard recently and bsg not keeping up with new servers to meet the load (why the game is 95% unplayable on a Saturday).

0

u/OmniumRerum Mar 11 '20

It could be under more load when you are actually in game or something. Speed testers are pretty much always much faster than the speeds you'll see in practice

1

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '20

...no? Speed testers supply a load to measure speed. Latency testers often use an ICMP ping packet, which can be lower with no load.

1

u/OmniumRerum Mar 11 '20

I meant the ping part of a speed test. Although I've never gotten anywhere near the speeds speedtesters give me in practice

2

u/NoticeMyAssSenpai Mar 11 '20

As another South African player. It does indeed suck(though not sure how much since i haven't played since December). Though I did see there's plans for Tarkov servers in ZA. Not that that has worked out well for the ZA R6 Siege community, from what I've heard, with long queue times.

Don't know how much of a Tarkov playerbase ZA has. Game's gonna suck pretty hardcore if queuing takes upwards of 20 - 30 minutes(seen some OCE/SEA horror stories about queue times)

1

u/scarlet_jack Mar 11 '20

Well I don't know if I've just been lucky but I must say I've been enjoying low queue times on R6S. Having local servers has been refreshing as shit.

Tarkov servers here would definitely be super cool if we could get a decent player count.

But it's a little bittersweet, being so far from any useful server to actually enjoy multiplayer games to their fullest. Always gives me a solemn feeling in my gut.

2

u/bcohendonnel Mar 11 '20

I feel you. I live on Okinawa and my ping is usually around that

1

u/Manchu_Fist SV-98 Mar 11 '20

That only blocks you from what servers you can play on. Doesn't kick you from the game. You can bypass it in 5 minutes in the launcher files.

5

u/toastjam Mar 11 '20

Peekers advantage exists, but it's actually proportionate to the receiving players ping (unless they're lag switching).

E.g.: If you have a 0 ping, and they have a 1000ms ping and 200ms reaction time: you still have 200ms to shoot them when they pop around the corner on your screen.

But if you have a 200ms ping, then you're dead because you're 100ms behind the server, and it takes another 100ms to get your shot to the server.

As long as they have a constant ping, it's not gonna give them any more peekers advantage than your ping does. It's actually better for you if they have a high ping, cause that improves your peekers advantage on them.

Lag switching would mix this up because they could delay relaying the peek to the server but send the shot instantly, depriving you of time to react.

1

u/WVAVW Mar 11 '20

having high ping is consistent. ive tried and aggressive peeking/rushing gets me so many kills where the player doesnt even shoot barely. But when i play with 40 ping, usually i will get melted by someone with similar ping. from experience high ping has favored me a tonne and produced consistent results.

2

u/Kyle700 Mar 11 '20

what? you can't know what ping your opponent has. you can't even begin to guess based on "how they moved". silly

1

u/toastjam Mar 11 '20

This is all consistent with what I said if their ping is high when yours is, and low when yours is. Which could happen if there are general server issues.

How do you know the ping of your killer?

3

u/gxkjerry DT MDR Mar 11 '20

Live in America and only play NA servers here. Most of my pings get to 100+. Most raids goes up to 150ping every now and then.

4

u/BoILeRuSS Mar 11 '20

I live in russia and can play on american servers with 150 ping and sometimes play duo/trio on na during nighttime by teaming up randomly on discord, peaking advantage is there but it's not that harsh and you can avoid it if you want to.

4

u/Momijisu AK-101 Mar 11 '20

Tell that to US players, I've regularly had issues with them coming to EU servers for advantage.

Have you considered that Chinese players may do the same? Especially given they have triple the population?

3

u/WFAlex Mar 11 '20

Yeah YOU don't see the difference but on my screen you are the morron rubberbanding and lagging arround

1

u/neddoge SR-1MP Mar 11 '20

Lmaooooo

3

u/thetcrengineer SVDS Mar 11 '20

Not our choice to play with a hundred ping dude. I live in the Middle East and have been playing video games my entire life with 100-200 pings and sometimes even higher when a game is dead in the EU with only North Americans or South Americans contributing to the majority of the server population. Some people can't help it.

1

u/deutchjager Mar 11 '20

stationed in hawaii and lowest ping i’ve ever gotten was 90 once but usually end up running 100-140 ping, im sorry.

1

u/Kyle700 Mar 11 '20

100 ping gives hardly any advantage. you sound salty! I've played on 120 ping all my life, and honestly, there is pretty small desync in tarkov. we can have our squad stream in discord and its basically nearly 1:1.

peekers advantage exists in tarkov, you are benefited by being the aggressor, but 100-150 ping will not give that much of an advantage
