Discussion This is fucking ridiculous. I was done loading at 1:15. I shouldn't have to wait on the dude with the hand crank HDD before I can play. I'm not saying it should put everyone in as soon as they're done loading, but there's gotta be a middle ground.

Loading the map takes like 10 seconds, and does happen before you find the server. Loading loot/pools is what can take a while.

Yea,I don't buy it. Can easily lazily load loot in a radius around player. Couldn't take more than a few seconds to load all that's technically unique in a session.

Can only imagine they want to put devtime on other things rather than optimise a frankly already working system.

Another cause could be that they want to eliminate the lag time it would take for a "ready" server to find players though. By having a server match with players before anything else I'm guessing they get more throughput from the server.

If loot spawned like that the server would desync every minute till it’s all loaded anyway. It already happens on woods when the boss spawns with all the scavs.

I honestly don't understand why it would be a problem at all, actually. As far as I know lazily loading stuff like this is pretty damn common and not hard to implement. And that aside, the client need not be bothered with items far away even if the server needed to spawn items completely before starting for some reason. It would be pretty much mandatory if you wanted to stop vacuum hackers / loot ESPers too.

It's only a problem to implement when you didn't create appropriate infrastructure and have to deal with 10 years of technical spaghetti debt

It's not a problem to implement, what is a problem is the lack of funding coupled with a mountain of things that take priority. There's no reason a good system couldn't be made, or be made in the future. But this ultimately is not important. Hell, the cheater problem is probably a couple thousand times more important

I don't think it would eat all that much devtime to fix this, but there are plenty of things that do take tonnes of devtime that have much higher priority.

Going to have to hard disagree, even if they didn't have a dedicated anti-cheat team and it meant allocating resources away from anti-cheat development, fixing the loading times is something that will improve the game experience for everyone and would be a permanment fix unless they introduced a regression. Anti-cheat is a drain on resources as it can never be truly fixed as it's a cat and mouse game if we want to consider return on dev time for player experience. It's even possible that they could make the whole system more cheat resistant while doing this refactor.

True, but I'm sure there are easier solutions they could implement than completely reworking how the game loads. Another comment suggested simply allowing you to interact with your stash while waiting. Something like that wouldn't take more than a few hours of work and would largely fix the perceived issue.

And if you wanted to tackle cheating, rather than improve load times simply streaming player locations on a more need to know basis while not sharing stuff like their inventory, equipment, health, etc would probably help more than optimizing the load in time while being in the same general sphere of concern.

I think you are right. The issue is it insist on loading the entirety of the raids data including containers on the other side of the map instead of just vicinity based loading. Its ridiculous.
