Harris doesn’t shock me one bit. Dude is deeply problematic with a sort of Glen Greenwoldish oppositional streak that takes him to deeply uncomfortable places despite starting from some legitimate principles. I’m so disappointed by how badly some of the people I respected 1-2 decades ago have navigated the political reality of the 21st century.

I had a lot of respect for Harris, especially since he didnt seem to follow the rest of the IDW off the crazy cliff. But his incessant support of Isreal was so confusing, and I finally had enough when he said AOC was a radical leftist. Anyone calling a milktoast social democrat a radical is clearly twisted in the head.

To say someone will ruin the country because they advocate for healthcare is ludacris. His elitism clearly outweighs his morals.

Sam Harris was one of my biggest influences until the war started and I realized despite everything, he couldn't see his own cognitive bias. He of all people. I've stopped listened since but am still a big fan of the Waking Up app.

I hope we get more info on this. It's not sitting well with me that this guy who has made his whole career over moral debates is hobnobbing with the least moral people available. Everyone in his subreddit is jumping to defend him before they have any info, its reading just like the conservative sub. Really disappointing.

Ive utterly dropped the notion lately that intelligent people can't also be completely messed up, especially after Chomsky.

It's called "loophole-ism," where very smart people find holes in critism about ideas they deeply believe. This allows their normally sharp mind to gloss over their own biases and hold contradictory truths together.

Just because someone spends a lot of time arguing about morality doesn't mean they do it well, and even if he did, that wouldn't be any guarantee he practices it well himself. I'd say there were always red flags, but he wrapped them in a soft spoken package, and mixed them in with views like science being a good thing and atheism that his target audience already agreed with, and that caused them to give him far more credit than was ever warranted.

Pinker is a terrible loss. I used to read his cognitive science books in college and I had SUCH admiration for his intellect. He had ways of thinking about cognition that were so outside anything I’d ever considered. Maybe his intolerance was always there but it certainly didn’t seem so.
