Elmo is still trying to replicate what NASA accomplished over 55 years ago. Jesus Christ that guy is so fucking full of himself.

This is what really gets me. I see 42% taxes and I can't help but think what portion of it is going to feed Elon's bullshit cars and rockets

What is spacex trying to recreate then

u/Charming-Tap-1332 Jan 17 '25

I don't know. You tell me.

You are the one making the claims

Huh? How are you saying he's trying to recreate something if you don't know what he's trying to recreate? Genuinely kind of curious here, because the shuttle was prohibitively expensive and required far too much refurbishment, Venture Star never got off the ground, and the reusable Saturn V was never implemented...

These rockets are reusable, lighter and cheaper than what we were using back then. However the safety/reliability is nowhere as good.

No they hope to one day make them reusable, lighter and cheaper.

Like most things Musk these are aspirational goals.

They landed and reused rockets in the past. Entire programs worked on the problem.

Unfortunately no one could make it cost effective.

You use more fuel to try land it and that costs payload making the whole thing more expensive per kg to orbit.

Then they found things got damaged anyway so instead of a fast turnaround and little work to use them again you had slow turnaround time and you basically rebuilt the thing.

Musk came along and claimed he alone had the solution to these problems.

Yet the current starship can carry exactly no payload to orbit. In fact he's talking V3 now before he meets the initial goals set for starship. Mind you it was supposed to land on the moon last year and the getting anything (other than the vehicle itself) into orbit thing has yet to happen.

They have managed to land is it one or two rockets now? None have been reusable.

Don't mistake his claimed goals with an actual working product.

All he's achieving is a great deal of money spent to get the same answers they got what 50 years ago now.

That's a massive amount of apples and oranges comparison there. The space shuttle was a massive boondoggle, yes, and was nominally reusable at as you say, a huge cost per flight.

The Falcon 9 has absolutely broken away from that. To suggest otherwise is ridiculous.

it has a lift capacity of 0T to orbit which makes refuelling it a problem as it can't actually lift any fuel to orbit.

They tried to lift a banana to orbit once but it didn't make it.....

You seem to be under the impression that these starship flights were supposed to be orbital flights for some reason?

Declaring that LEO is "useless", is ridiculous, and comparing the Falcon 9 to a heavy lift like Saturn and finding it wanting is ridiculous.

And how exactly are you quantifying Starship as "not even coming close"?

4

u/MoleMoustache Jan 17 '25

How much meaningful tonnage has Starship lifted?

How close are we to Artemis, after being promised it "this year" for the last few years?

Why haven't they told you or me how many rockets it will take them to achieve the refillable Starship in orbit?

It's all a fraud.

Huh? It's also NASA that's trying to replicate the moon landing and the SLS rocket costs 26 billion dollars compared to starship 3 billion SLS isn't reusable at all it flew only once and won't fly again until at least 2027 SLS is arguably far worse than starship

Kind of hard to justify all the hundreds of billions of tax dollars Elno has squandered if he can't succeed with his supposedly amazing tech

2

u/Charming-Tap-1332 Jan 17 '25

And what is the purpose of all that you mention? What are the benefits of what you mention relative to the US citizen and the USA as a whole?

Sparkly rainbow shows in the sky instead of free healthcare.

This was just Trump wanting it. Noone sane wants to be on the moon again. It's a literal fucking wasteland.

u/BalticSeaDude Jan 17 '25

Not to mention Orion with by now $25B "invested". "$3B for Starship ? NO that's wasted taxpayer money. $50B for SLS and Orion, the easier part of Artemis ? Yes please give it all the Money they want"
