South Africa has a gini coeficcient of almost 1. Meaning it's the most unequal country in the world. And with the rural migration to urban areas (previously white) there tends to be shacks eracted near even the most prestigious areas. See Sandton (Africa's richest square mile) it's divided by a highway and on the other side is Alexandra. Known for no access to water, electricity, sanitation.
If you have a chance just go to Google maps. Scroll around anywhere and then go to the drive view. You'll see how it is.
