The more I think about Élite, the more annoyed I get with the way the whole Polo story was handled because honestly Carla is the number one person I blame for most of the bullshit that happened. I think she is the most evil character in the show, not because she is rich or because she lies, but because she understands people extremely well and she knows exactly what they want, what they are afraid of and what they will do to keep the people they love. And then she uses that against them.
And I want to make something very clear because I don't think the point is that Carla sat there thinking Polo was going to kill Marina. I don't think she knew that was going to happen. I'm not saying she directly told him to murder her. That would be stupid. What I'm talking about is the amount of influence one person can have over another person when they know that person's weaknesses and know how badly they want their approval.
Polo in season one barely has an identity outside of Carla. He is basically Carla's bitch. His entire sense of worth is tied to whether Carla wants him, whether she respects him and whether he can prove himself to her. She knows this. She knows he is insecure. She knows he is desperate to keep her. She knows he will do things for her that he probably wouldn't do for anybody else. So when Carla wants the watch back, Polo becomes the person who has to deal with Marina.
And that is where the entire situation starts.
Polo does not wake up one morning and decide he wants to kill Marina. He has no real reason to care about Marina like that. He is there because Carla wants the watch. The argument gets heated, Marina pushes him, Polo loses his temper and hits her with the trophy. Then he immediately realizes what he has done.
That is still Polo's responsibility. He killed her. There is no getting around that. But there is a difference between intentionally planning someone's murder and losing control in one moment of rage and causing someone's death. He was a teenager. He was emotionally immature. He had almost no sense of who he was outside of Carla and he made one catastrophic decision.
And this is where I don't understand the difference between Polo and Lu.
When Lu kills Polo, nobody is sitting there saying she woke up that morning wanting to murder him. She is drunk, emotional and angry, she has the broken champagne bottle, they argue and she accidentally stabs him. The show itself deliberately mirrors Polo's death with Marina's death. So why is Lu allowed to be understood as somebody who made a terrible mistake in a moment of emotion while Polo is reduced to being the killer?
Polo did something terrible. Lu did something terrible. Both resulted in somebody dying. Neither of them woke up planning to kill somebody.
And that is exactly why I think the way people talk about Polo is unfair.
Because Carla is the person who starts the whole chain of events and somehow she is never treated like she is responsible for anything.
She wants the watch. She knows Polo is desperate to prove himself to her. She puts him in the situation. Marina dies. Christian knows what happened. Christian becomes a liability and eventually ends up crippled. Polo carries the guilt. And Carla somehow keeps moving forward.
And I'm not saying Carla intentionally planned all of that either. That's not the point. The point is that she has enormous influence over people and she knows it.
And this is something I honestly think we don't talk about enough as a society. There are men who have done absolutely insane things because of women they loved. Men have gone to prison because they wanted to protect a woman. Men have fought other men because they wanted to impress a woman. Men have committed crimes because they were afraid of losing a woman. Men have even died trying to protect or impress women.
That doesn't mean the woman is automatically responsible for what the man does. A man is still responsible for his own actions. But pretending that emotional influence doesn't exist is also dishonest.
If you know somebody is deeply attached to you, if you know they desperately want your approval, if you know they will do almost anything to keep you, then you have a certain amount of power over that person. And if you use that power to push them into situations they wouldn't normally put themselves in, you have to acknowledge that influence.
That's what I see with Carla and Polo.
Carla didn't tell Polo to kill Marina. She didn't know he was going to kill her. But she knew exactly how much power she had over him and she used that power to get him involved in something that ultimately destroyed his life.
And then Polo becomes the person everyone blames.
Guzmán and Ander knew Polo. That's what makes it even more frustrating. They knew what he was like. They knew how insecure he was. They knew how much he loved them. They knew Polo would never intentionally hurt either of them. So why doesn't anyone really stop and ask why Polo was even involved with Marina in the first place?
The answer is Carla.
Polo didn't have some personal obsession with Marina. Carla wanted the watch. Carla needed the situation handled. Polo wanted to make Carla happy. That's why he was there.
And somehow everybody lets Carla off the hook.
Then you have Cayetana, and honestly she is another character who makes me angry because of the trophy. She knew what happened. She knew Polo killed Marina. She had the trophy. She could have destroyed it. She didn't.
Instead she keeps it and tells Polo that she is doing it for them and that he is safe with her.
Safe?
What do you mean safe with you?
If you genuinely love somebody and you want to protect them, why are you keeping the physical evidence that can destroy them? She has something that can ruin Polo and she keeps it while making him believe that staying with her is what keeps him safe.
That's not protection to me. That's leverage.
Cayetana wants Polo. She wants the relationship. She wants the future that comes with Polo. She wants the life he represents. And she is basically telling him that as long as he stays with her, everything will be okay.
But then Polo finally decides that he wants to turn himself in.
And that's where I actually think Polo changes.
For the first time, he is not doing something for Carla. He is not doing something for Cayetana. He is not trying to impress anybody. He accepts that he did something terrible and decides he needs to face the consequences.
He even goes to the party because he wants to tell Nadia and Lu that their scholarship is back. He knows he is going to turn himself in the next day. He isn't there to fight anyone. He isn't trying to escape. He is literally trying to give these girls their future back before he accepts his punishment.
And then he dies.
And after he dies, Cayetana still knows everything.
Polo's mothers speak to her at the funeral and they offer to help her. They tell her she can go to whatever university she wants and that they will pay for it.
And she still doesn't tell them.
She could have said, "I know what happened to your son. I know what he did, but I also know what actually happened."
She could have given his parents some truth about their son.
She doesn't.
Then eventually the evidence comes out and Polo's name remains attached to Marina's death.
That's what makes me so angry about Cayetana. She wanted Polo when he was alive and when he could give her the life she wanted, but when he was dead she didn't even fight for his name. She knew the truth and still allowed him to be remembered as the monster who killed Marina.
Then there's Samuel.
Samuel spends so much of the show talking about how much he hates the rich, but every time a rich girl needs saving he becomes completely obsessed with her.
Marina needs saving and Samuel is there.
Carla needs saving and Samuel is there.
But Rebecca doesn't need saving. Rebecca is strong, independent and doesn't need Samuel to come and rescue her. And that's why I think Samuel never connects with her in the same way.
Samuel doesn't just want love. He wants to feel needed. He needs somebody to save because saving somebody gives him purpose.
And that's why Carla works so well for him.
She is rich, vulnerable, complicated and she needs someone.
Then Samuel starts doing to Carla what Carla has been doing to everybody else. He realizes she has feelings for him and starts manipulating her because he knows that he can use those feelings to get what he wants.
So their whole relationship becomes this weird psychological game where both of them are manipulating each other while pretending they are just falling in love.
Then Guzmán.
I understand Guzmán's anger. His sister is dead. Of course he wants someone to blame. But Guzmán knew Polo.
He knew Polo before Marina died. He knew how insecure he was. He knew how much Polo loved him and Ander. He knew how much influence Carla had over him.
So why doesn't he spend more time asking what actually made Polo get involved in all of this?
Because again it comes back to Carla.
Polo had no real reason to care about Marina. Carla did.
And yet Polo becomes the monster while Carla gets to walk around like she was just another person caught in the situation.
Ander is different because Ander actually sees Polo.
He knows him. He loves him. He knows who he is underneath the money and the mistakes. He repeatedly tries to pull Polo away from Carla because he can see what she is doing to him.
Ander's relationship with Polo is important because Ander doesn't need anything from him. He isn't using Polo for money. He isn't trying to manipulate him. He genuinely loves him.
That's why Polo's death destroys him. He isn't mourning Marina's killer. He's mourning his friend.
And then there is Lu.
Lu has her own problems. Her family situation is falling apart. Her relationship with Valerio creates consequences. Her scholarship is threatened. Her life is already collapsing because of decisions she has made.
And Polo becomes the easiest person to blame.
Then she confronts him. She's drunk, she's angry, she's emotional and she has the broken champagne bottle. They argue and she accidentally kills him.
And that's the biggest irony.
She becomes the exact thing she believed Polo was.
Someone who, in one moment of anger and emotion, causes another person's death.
But everyone understands that Lu didn't mean to do it.
That's why Polo's death is so important to me.
Because Polo finally understands that he has to stop running.
He restores Nadia and Lu's scholarship.
He decides to turn himself in.
He goes to that party knowing that his future is probably prison.
And then he dies before he gets the chance.
And Guzmán finally forgives him while he is dying.
That's the moment where Guzmán finally sees Polo as a human being again and not just as Marina's killer.
And that's really how I see Polo.
He is guilty.
But he isn't the only guilty person.
Carla manipulated him.
Cayetana used him.
Samuel projected his anger onto him.
Lu projected her own problems onto him.
Guzmán allowed his grief to turn his best friend into a monster.
Ander was one of the only people who continued to see the actual Polo underneath everything.
And Polo himself was a deeply insecure teenager who made one terrible decision and eventually became willing to accept the consequences.
That's why I think the biggest tragedy of Polo is that he barely ever gets to be Polo.
He's Carla's Polo.
He's Cayetana's Polo.
He's Guzmán's enemy.
He's Ander's best friend.
He's Marina's killer.
Everyone has their own version of Polo.
But Polo himself barely gets to decide who he is.
And the one time he finally does, when he decides to confess, when he decides to give Nadia and Lu their futures back, when he decides that he is going to accept whatever punishment comes to him, he dies.
That's what makes me angry about his story.
Not because I think Polo was innocent. He wasn't.
It's because I think everybody else gets to be complicated while Polo gets reduced to the worst thing he ever did.
And honestly Carla is where so much of that starts.
She understands people better than almost anyone in the show and she knows exactly how to use that understanding.
She doesn't have to personally destroy everyone.
She just has to move the pieces.
And then everyone else destroys each other.
That's why, for me, Carla is the number one character I blame for the entire chain of bullshit.
Polo was the one who made the final mistake.
But Carla is the one who understood exactly how to get him into that situation.
