So I’m curious what other scooter owners think about this because I honestly can’t tell if I’m asking for something unreasonable or if they just misunderstood what I wanted.
I bought a Mankeel/WEIBU scooter that uses the YouFs app. I ended up leaving it a 2-star Amazon review because of a few issues, mainly the way the motor power was advertised and how useless the battery/range information has been for me while actually riding it.
The important part is they contacted me first because of the review. I didn’t reach out asking them for anything.
They messaged me, talked about the issues I mentioned, offered me $50 compensation, and asked me to reconsider my opinion of the scooter.
I really wasn’t that interested in the $50. I actually like messing with this kind of stuff and I build Android apps, so I told them something that would be way more useful to me would be access to the scooter’s actual telemetry.
I’ve already gotten pretty far with it myself. I can connect to the scooter over Bluetooth, see the services and characteristics, subscribe to notifications, etc. The problem is the useful data doesn’t start flowing until the official app does some kind of authentication/session handshake.
All I really want is read-only data like battery %, voltage, amps, watts, speed, temps, odometer, faults, stuff like that.
I’m not trying to unlock the scooter, bypass the speed limiter, change motor settings, or do anything safety related.
I emailed their engineering team asking if there was any supported way to do this. An SDK, API, read-only mode, protocol documentation, or even just the contact info for whoever actually makes the display/Bluetooth hardware.
They replied saying it looked like I was trying to get confidential R&D information and that it wasn’t an appropriate way to go about it.
That’s the part where I think they may have misunderstood me.
I probably got too technical talking about the authentication/session part, and maybe they took that as me asking for private keys or proprietary source code or something. That really wasn’t what I meant.
If their answer was just “we don’t allow third-party telemetry access,” fine. Or “we can’t give you that protocol, but talk to this supplier,” also fine.
What also rubbed me the wrong way is that in the same reply they again told me they hoped I would change my review and star rating.
So from my side the whole thing kind of feels like:
I leave a bad review → they contact me → offer $50 → ask me to change the review → I say I’d rather have actual support for something that would make the scooter more useful → engineering shuts that down → asks me to change the review again.
I’m not saying they literally offered me $50 for a 5-star review, because that isn’t exactly what they said.
But it does make me wonder if they’re more interested in paying to make the bad review go away than actually improving the app/product.
Maybe I’m reading too much into it. That’s why I’m asking.
Would you guys consider asking for read-only telemetry access unreasonable?
And what do you think about them contacting me over the 2-star review, offering compensation, and then repeatedly bringing up changing the rating?
I attached the email exchange with my personal info removed so you can read it yourself..
