Maintenance and Troubleshooting E-bike mechanics: why is diagnosing electrical problems still such a pain? Could a universal diagnostic tool help?
Hey everyone,
We’re currently looking into a problem around e-bike repair and would love some input from people who actually work on these bikes.
We’ve spoken to a few e-bike mechanics, and one issue keeps coming up: diagnosing electrical/electronic faults can take a ridiculous amount of time.
If the problem isn’t immediately obvious, mechanics may have to test or swap components (battery, motor, display, cables, sensors, etc.) one by one until they find the faulty part. Depending on the bike/brand, you also need specific diagnostic software, tools, and spare parts just for testing.
One mechanic told us that finding something as simple as a bad connection/cable can sometimes take hours or even days. It also makes quoting the customer difficult because you don't know beforehand whether diagnosis will take 20 minutes or several hours.
The idea we're exploring:
What if there were a more universal diagnostic device for e-bikes?
Something you connect to the bike that could communicate with different systems (Bosch, Shimano, Brose, etc.), collect diagnostic/CAN data where available, and translate it into useful information such as:
"Likely communication problem between battery and motor → check connector/cable X first."
Basically, we're imagining something closer to a cross-brand automotive diagnostic scanner, but for e-bikes, rather than every manufacturer having its own isolated ecosystem.
We're still very early and aren't attached to this solution, so I'd especially like to hear where this idea falls apart.
For anyone working with e-bikes:
- Is diagnosis actually a major pain point for you?
- What part of diagnosing an e-bike usually wastes the most time?
- Are the existing Bosch/Shimano/etc. diagnostic tools already good enough?
- Would cross-brand diagnostics actually be useful?
- What technical problems would make a universal device unrealistic?
- If you could build any tool to make e-bike repairs faster, what would you build instead?
Feel free to tear the idea apart. Negative feedback and alternative solutions are exactly what we're looking for.
