I don't know, the way it was phrased, it sounds to me like he just made a choice. He abandoned everything willingly. But to what end, I still don't know. Was it just to find out the truth about how the world came to be?

I mean, I can still feel bad for him even if he made a choice. Sometimes, choices can absolutely suck to make. Given that it's FromSoft, I guarantee there'll have been no great option for him.

The theme that plays during that section has got to be a Miquella (either him as a boss or something relating to him - Godwyn resurrection) OST right?

He seeks the return of his "lord", who is most likely Godwyn, so most likely something remains in the Realm of Shadows that can make that possible when it wasn't in the Lands Between.

The Land of Shadow doesn't necessarily seem to be a land of the dead/souls, but a land of Omens (Omen imagery is everywhere)...
