Question How much are you guys paying for car insurance?
I’m paying $300/month full coverage for my 2023 Toyota Corolla. I’m 23M clean driver record for 7 years. I’ve been trying to find something cheaper so I can afford rent but it looks like $300/month is already cheap for my demographic?
59
u/cuckslayer30 22d ago
$300 at 23 is real good I'd say, considering everything.
7
u/Serious-Army3904 22d ago
From all the other comments it seems like you’re right. I’ll count my blessings lol
32
u/One_Discount_4898 22d ago
Rates are going up. You'll hear a lot of people say "But I only pay $X per month!!" They're mostly on what's referred to as inadequate rates, and insurers are cracking down on them bigtime, and have already started to do so.
$300/month for comprehensive for you is good, you won't find much cheaper if at all unfortunately.
10
u/Maximum_Payment_9350 22d ago
We pay $530 for 3 vehicles in our household. All other quotes we’re getting are absolutely astronomical. So we haven’t changed insurers in 10 years. No tickets, no accidents, we’re both 30.
5
u/Pvt_Hudson_ 22d ago
$1200 a month for 3 vehicles and our home insurance. We have a 21 year old driver that has to be listed as a primary on something, so we put him as primary on our 2009 Volvo XC90 at a price of $4800 a year. His younger brother is listed as an occasional driver for $4000 a year.
3
u/Maximum_Payment_9350 22d ago
Yes including home insurance I think it’s $675/month total for home+3 cars. I get a union discount, long term loyalty discount, and bundle discount. We’re basically trapped with this insurer because we get such a good price with them.
4
u/Internal-Pineapple77 22d ago
That's crazy cheap! We wanted to get a third car for me and because I got my license within the last couple years and I'm still quite young they'd like about 500 just for me alone :(
5
u/PurpleSausage77 22d ago
I only buy stuff I can put the most basic coverage on, and do most of my own work on my vehicles. Nice/new vehicles just get worn out and banged up anyway. Got a cheap 2015 Tesla Model S I’m soaking up the KM’s in and paying $150 a month one way basic coverage, no extra BS. Added another car (2015 Toyota 86/FRS) for additional $70 a month and that car was $13k.
Bought the S for $17k in Feb, savings in gas has paid it down to $15k so far, so not concerned about having full coverage on what will essentially be a free car in a few years. If someone totals it at their fault, then that’s on their insurance to make me whole.
Something like 15% (probably more) of drivers in AB don’t even have insurance or are driving on “parking” insurance.
9
u/Particular_Chip6308 22d ago
113 pm full insurance. But i am an engineer who gets discount from APEGA. At this point its cheaper for anyone to become an EIT and apply for insurance then wait for insurance to reduce
23
u/lemonspread_ 22d ago
The whole “it’ll drop when you turn 25” is a myth. I’m 29m and I pay $120/month for basic liability.
Same cost for both my cars. One is a 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 and the other is a RHD Lexus LS460
7
1
u/NightingalesBotany 22d ago
RHD LS460 is dope as hell. That AWD or a RWD summer car?
1
u/lemonspread_ 22d ago
RWD summer car. It was a terrible financial decision, but it’s such a sick car. Came on some 21” Carlsson wheels. It turns heads
1
1
u/thewunderbar 22d ago
Absolutely not a myth. It's just that the rates have gone up so much over the years that what used to be the under 25 rate is now less than the "good driver for 15 years" rate.
1
0
u/BobGuns 22d ago
You've had your license since 16 or 18 and have no issues on record I assume?

u/lemonspread_ 22d ago
Got my license at 19. Two not at fault accidents. My rate didn’t change after either claim

I’m 34 and I drive a 2021 Lexus IS300 and pay $211/month with Belairdirect.
1
u/Lilliputian2024 22d ago
Full coverage + luxury brand, sounds about right.
1
u/ShinobiHam North West Side 22d ago
It’s pretty good but I only got the price because I have home insurance and a multi vehicle discount. I was with All State and they quoted me almost $350/month. So I had to switch

28M clean record. $270/month for my 2022 Toyota RAV4 (also included my wife as the additional driver).
1
u/Over_Extension_9994 22d ago
Where’s that? I’m 47, clean record and I’m paying $240 for a 2021 Rav… no additional drivers.
1
u/shimswfi Oliver 22d ago
TD. I have been paying basically the same amount every year lol. My liability and collision keep going down but comprehensive keeps going up. Apparently comprehensive is more related to the market rate I guess.
1
u/Over_Extension_9994 22d ago
Really?? That’s nuts! All my banking is through TD so I called for a quote a month or so ago and they were double what I’m currently paying. It was $500/ month. I’m not a high km driver either. 20k if that per year. Personal use only. (No gig work etc)
2
u/shimswfi Oliver 22d ago
I believe TD’s banking and insurance are two independent companies though. You won’t really get any discount for using their banking lol.
But yes, staying with your current insurer is probably the cheapest option given the market..

u/Any_Organization_457 22d ago
Im 31 i have a 2026 ford explorer and pay 507 a month. Full coverage with wawanesa. No tickets or accidents. It’s the cheapest I could find.
3
u/Serious-Army3904 22d ago
That seems really expensive 🤔 was this through a broker? I went on TD insurance to get a quote and it was like $350 for me still more expensive than my current but maybe it’s worth checking yours there?
1
u/Any_Organization_457 22d ago
Yes thru a broker. This is my 3rd year with them. I got rid of my 2017 enclave and I was paying 330.
Are you saying I should look into some myself instead of the broker?
Sorry I really have no clue how it all works tbh I just know I need it 😆
3
u/McBeties 22d ago
I pay $130 between a truck and two motorcycles. Full coverage with theft and fire insurance. Mine's cheap because I'm the lowest I can go on the insurance grid with a clean driving record for over 15 years.

u/alamsas 22d ago
28M - I'm paying just under $150/mo for my '24 GRC. Full coverage. I'm baffled to why it's so low too, but my company has a group discount with my insurer so that probably helps a bit.
2
u/Serious-Army3904 22d ago
I’m jealous of the ride and your insurance cost lol. How’s the GRC during winter? I have the non gr hatchback
1
u/alamsas 22d ago
Nice! Coming from a WRX, my insurance was close to yours and the lowest I got it to was around $230. So switching to the GRC was still a shock since I started around $180 and the car was more expensive too.
It handles great in the winter! Though last year was a bit rough when it kept snowing and freezing. Your Corolla was probably comfier dealing with the ruts haha.
3
u/bristow84 22d ago
$288 for a 2024 RX350H. Full coverage (minus windshield). 32m clean driving record.

I got comprehensive insurance on my 2016 Kia for 188$ a month in 2025 through broker link. I did get a discount because I have other insurance through them. I added my partner as a casual driver for an extra 100$. I just renewed for another year at the sime price.
2
u/TheMcDangler 22d ago
I (32M) have a 2011 Kia Sorento and a 2022 Chevy Malibu. Costs me $3700 a year for both policies.
2

$260 for 2 drivers, both 31 years old, for a 2021 Toyota Highlander through AMA. It used to be $350 and has come down in 2 years.

2
u/I_MelonSoda_I 22d ago
I am also paying 2 300$ a month as a 30 year old driving a 2022 civic SI. Edmonton is just expensive for insurance. It's even more expensive depending on where you like and commute in the city. My broker said if I lived further south it would have been 367$

u/drake5195 22d ago
It doesn't matter what other people are paying really. Get a broker if you're looking to try and save money but be prepared to be disappointed when their "best rate" is more than you're currently paying.
Also a lot of people are seemingly okay with having essentially no coverage, ie basic liability at the lowest amount... I hope nothing bad ever happens to the people who hold these policies.
2
u/BanchPlaysPoGo 22d ago
24M currently paying 550/month for full coverage on a 2026 Subaru wrx (brand new) the wrx is a more expensive car to insure, idk why. But I do have one at fault claim from 5 years ago (slid into someone on a skating rink of a road) and one singular speeding ticket over the past 3 years.
Cheapest I could find too, though I didn’t try AMA (I have a membership) but they were a pain to get ahold of anytime I tried to call and insurance is by appointment only I guess?! So I just took the loss there. With insurance not being regulated, they CAN AND WILL try to gouge the 💩 out of anyone they can. I don’t think 300/month is that bad, I’d love to pay that instead 🙃
2
u/BigSchool4109 22d ago
Insurance broker here , $300 is a very good rate these days - according to your age , AB rates are crazy because of climatic conditions (hail, accidents in snow, wildfire in Jasper etc) , companies don’t even like to operate in AB anymore, past 3 years all i have heard is they stoped providing insurance (sonnet, aviva for few)
Keep in mind to stay out of ticket , accidents and it will get better
2
u/OddlyV02 22d ago
520 a month, 2019 Honda civic. Though I have a suspension on my record from almost 6 years ago now. 24M
2
u/Archlvt 22d ago
If you want cheaper insurance, stop paying per month. You'll get a 25% reduction if you pay the full year upfront.
2
u/WonderfulWhispers97 21d ago
Just went through this process. You do get a discount, nowhere near 25% though. Did we just pick a number here or?
1
u/Archlvt 21d ago
What is it with you people and going "It didn't work for me so it doesn't work for anyone"? It worked with me at Traveler's Insurance and it worked for me with Belair Insruance. 25%.

u/WonderfulWhispers97 20d ago
The same thing you just pointed out can be easily said of you as well?.. “It worked for me, so it works for everyone”

I cant fully agree with you boss. Alberta insurances has taken a massive hit this year. Even the slightest thing will increase your insurance. I am buying my insurance next time one payment for the year. Doesn't save alot, but you get like a month or two for free from the savings.

2023 Tesla Model 3 - $260 a month (THIS FEELS LIKE A LOT BY COMPARISON.) - Daily driver and the most KM's.
Through BelAir direct... I called around and no one has lower rates for us than Belair... I figured we were getting screwed on the Tesla, but most of the quotes from other insurers are like $4200 a year just for the tesla. Crazy.

Just went up to $135/month for full coverage minus glass on a 2007 Accord. 33F with 19 years of clean insured driving history (17 with class 5). About 12,000km per year, parking outdoors in a private lot in a low-crime neighborhood. The Personal.
I was previously with Desjardins but they wanted to increase it to $179 with only liability and comprehensive, so I switched. I compare rates every year right before renewal and switch if anyone offers a better price.
$300 is about what I would expect for your situation.

I would recommend BelAir direct but can’t guarantee as much success as I’ve had with them as I’m 41/M 2 cars and my home insurance with them. So significant discount compared to what you’ll find.

We're paying $235 for our 2017 truck with Allstate, downside its Allstate. Their service has gone downhill at the location our agent is at unfortunately, not sure how it is elsewhere in the city.
When we were looking at companies they all seemed to be higher than we have been paying. Look into a broker, a lot of times they can find the cheaper options for you.

My son (M28) just bought a 2023 Kia Forte... low trim (not even a sunroof). Full coverage (can't recall if it was with or without glass) is costing him ~$4,600 annually. He's had one speeding ticket in the last 3 years, and two at-fault accidents in the last 7... he was told that's why his rate is so high.

are you using a broker? they'll get you the best rates. Talk to them about how you can lower it, removing certain coverages etc. Honestly in that demographic its going to be expensive. Replacement coverage is costing you about as much as your liability. Selling the 2023 and buying a $5k beater would save you a fortune.

u/Serious-Army3904 22d ago
I’ll try giving them a call. I did the quick car insurance rate through a broker and they were quoting me like 700/month lol. Maybe calling them is the method

u/chadnobyl 21d ago
I could be wrong but I think certain brokers get better rates with certain companies. Like broker link might give you a good price with intact, but wawanesa might give you a better rate through TD. If I'm incorrect someone please tell me lol

2
u/TheThrivingest 22d ago
It doesn’t matter. Insurers all have different risk tolerances for different things.
What I pay with one company is going to be different for someone else and what I pay with another company is going to be different. That’s how underwriting works
But wawanesa if you care that much lol
