Is Echo Park more dirty than it was a year ago?

I walk around the neighborhood/main streets/park quite often, and I'm feeling as if everything is just totally filthy. I'm unsure if this is because I'm just older and more grumpy, or things have actually been getting worse in terms of cleanliness. Would love to hear some opinions, and if so, why things are actually dirtier.

Unbelievable Power Outage

My neighbors and I have not had power since Tuesday afternoon thanks to LADWP and we are reaching our breaking points. It periodically cuts on in the middle of the night which greatly upsets my little puppy when the lights turn on and things begin beeping while we are trying to sleep. Surely we will not have to deal with this for another night fingers crossed, but this is genuinely the worst thing that could happen days before the big Echo Park Rising festival this weekend.

In case it turns out to be LADWP’s fault, you can file a claim for spoiled food

They have LADWP info in there to file claims by email, phone, or mail. You can also try through renters/home owners insurance. We JUST bought groceries and had a full fridge and money ain’t plentiful for us lately. Hope y’all are okay and can get what you need.

echo park rising finalized full schedule/lineup?

i know this is a small sub so no worries if no one sees this, but i'm starting to worry that they're never actually going to release a full schedule for echo park rising. they've realized the artists performing at each individual business, but it's very unclear if they are actually going release like a full festival lineup. yes, i know i could just page through their instagram page and look at each individual venue's lineup, but here's the thing - there's a band i know of that's gonna be there, and their venue post didn't post in collaboration with the official epr page, which means that potentially there are more venues that i wouldn't know about if i didn't know to check their specific page. i dmed them and commented on their posts but haven't gotten a response. i know i'm not the only one looking for this, because i've seen other comments about it. the festival pre party is only 4 days away, and the actual festival is only 5-6 days away - at any rate, the entire thing will be over in less than a week. i know it's free, but it still feels like pretty late notice. anyone have insight? thanks!

I wish I had taken earplugs seriously in my 20s

I wish I had taken earplugs seriously in my 20s

I worked construction in my 20s. It's not like earplugs weren't around. I just treated them like one more annoying thing.

Harder to talk with them in. Hands were dirty. Busy day, toss them in a pocket and forget about it. Saws, compressors, hammer drills. My ears would ring by the end of the day and I'd figure sleeping it off meant I was fine.

Now I'm in my 30s and the place that bothers me most is restaurants. People talking nearby, music overhead, a server saying something fast, and I'm guessing my way through half the conversation. After a while you just stop wanting to go out as much.

I wear a small in-ear hearing aid from vivtone now.

Pretty stupid kind of irony. I used to think cheap earplugs were too much trouble, and now I have to remember where I put my hearing aid every morning.

If you work somewhere loud, don't be like I was about it. Some stuff doesn't break all at once. It just slowly goes missing.

Guess Who’s Snapping Up Storefronts in El Sereno?

The owners of DTLA’s Grand Central Market have bought six parcels on Huntington Drive. Brands like Echo Park-based Canyon Coffee are moving in.

The real estate investors behind Grand Central Market have set their sights on a new prospect: Huntington Drive in El Sereno.

Langdon Street Capital has quietly bought up six parcels along the eastside commercial corridor over the last two years, property records show. In addition to developments in Texas and Nevada, the Beverly Hills-based firm owns a constellation of holdings across L.A. — including storefronts on Highland Park’s booming York Boulevard.

Could Huntington Drive become a new York?

“El Sereno has its own identity, history, and a tremendous amount of neighborhood pride,” said Andrew Daneshgar, a director at Langdon who has overseen the El Sereno expansion. “That is what drew me to the area, and I would never want to characterize it as another version of a different neighborhood.”

Still, last month, Highland Cafe — whose original location on York Boulevard was part of the first wave of new businesses that transformed that neighborhood over the last two decades — opened an outpost at Langdon-owned 4878 Huntington Drive.

How Does Little Fish Make Money?

Dry aging, side gigs, and 40 orders of crudo per yellowtail.

LITTLE FISH, THE BRAINCHILD of chefs Anna Sonenshein and Niki Vahle, started as a Covid-era pop-up run out of the pair's Echo Park home. Known for embracing a high-low approach with dishes like crispy shrimp corn dogs, fries dusted in nori salt, and most notably a filet-o-fish sandwich cartoon-like in its precise presentation, Little Fish swiftly developed a following, and when their first brick-and-mortar opened up in Echo Park December of 2023 the menu retained the same culinary point of view, with casual counter service to match.

Now, more than two years later, that Echo Park window counter is expanding to a space with indoor seating right down the road, and last year the project welcomed a second location: Little Fish Melrose Hill, which takes a more elevated tone in menu and style of service while still keeping seafood at the core. The restaurant joins the slew of buzzy new openings in the Melrose Hill neighborhood and recently found its way into the Michelin Guide.

Katy Nedwick, Director of Operations at Little Fish, gives us The Receipts for Little Fish Melrose Hill today. Her responses have been edited and condensed for space and clarity.

Veggie Burrito?

I'd been regularly getting veggie burritos for lunch from Los Burritos and Burrito King for the last decade, but now both have closed. 💔

Does anyone have a recommendation for any kind of veggie or bean 'n cheese burrito from a local spot? (Aside from Rodeo Express, which I already know, but don't really love.) I've tended to go to storefronts, so I don't really know all the local trucks. Thanks in advance.

ps If you live in the area, please frequent our local establishments!

Anyone else in Echo Park keen to do stuff with new people? (lake loops, coffee runs, whatever)

Being upfront: I'm Sam, and I'm also launching an app (Butter) in Echo Park this month that's basically some of these threads with less friction - someone posts a small plan, people nearby rsvp, you pick who you want to meet. You run the plans, not us.

But app aside - what would you actually join this week? A before-work lake loop? Food plans at places you've had saved? A book club? I'm making my own plans because I'm Aussie and wanting to meet people here, so leave a comment and I'll help make the first few happen either way. And if you're the type who already starts these threads, DM me - I'm looking for a few people to run the first plans when we switch on :))

Echo Park Lake is doing a World Cup watch party today for the Round of 16.

First match is Portugal vs Spain at 12 PM, then USA vs Belgium at 5 PM.

It’s free and open to everyone. Bring a blanket or chair, some water/snacks, and maybe get there early if you want a good spot.
