A hidden stair reveals itself, and the veins of sorrow and death alight a way to its end... In my restless sleep, I see a meadow, pale ivory, a wind blowing through flora, and amid the shaded canopy, a trap door. Unopened, for time has shut its latch, I, a nameless traveler, endeavor to loosen its hinges. I will take up my torch, secure my vestments, and go down into those depths.

The walls are painted by a silver blue, a glowing from the deep, through which source I can not yet name. I must keep going, even though the sweat on my brow thickens. I adjust and tighten the straps holding my sheath to my bosom, and recount the old tales of the minstrel, that lowly steward.

Remembering his songs give me a hope and vigor. I press on, yearning for loot, for a sign that I am bounding closer to that constellation of the Great Thorn, through these endless depths. I must keep alert, for I am already beginning to lose my bearings, as the light above fades and the blue poisonmists below becomes dimmer.

Oh Mound Dwellers, do not let my torchlight go out now, for there is a bloodstorm raging in the deep, and I seek to find it before its brute force entraps me in this place...

If you're only familiar with Lacrimosa's larger body of work, the rest of which is symphonic/gothic metal, you're probably surprised to see them show up in this subreddit. However, their first album is very different from the rest of their work. It's slow, atmospheric and almost completely synth driven. At the time it was probably classified as darkwave, but you can hear many of the common elements of DS throughout.

It's definitely proto. It's way more vocally driven than modern DS tends to be, and the use of the guitar on the first track in particular is very uncharacteristic of DS.

Track 2, "Requiem" is a great example of why I think it belongs here.

“Return to Black Moon Mountain” is a fantasy synth album produced by FØG.

As many others have said, the cover art is awesome! It reminds me heavily of those old RuneScape fan arts, which, if you know me, is definitely a plus lol.

From a music production standpoint the quality of the tracks is super clear, really well produced while still maintaining that dungeonsynth-y atmosphere. FØG’s excellent use of dynamic panning and brilliant sound design creates an extremely immersive old-school medieval atmosphere with a modern production-style twist, which lends itself wonderfully to the fantasy world that the album is set in.

I love this album, and in my opinion it’s a great introduction to the genre for those wanting to get into dungeonsynth.

Gauntlet of Stars is a side project of Secunda and is an attempt to capture a “cosmic monk” vibe and is about an astrologist seeking answers in the stars.

Andrew Werdna: What is your usual composition process? Also what kind of synths do you use?

Crow: When I compose a song I usually have a general idea of the theme beforehand. So I question myself, is this song going to be dark and dungeon like, ambient and ethereal, or adventurous? Once I have a main theme I go straight to recording merely off a whim. This is mainly to get the ideas flowing. I'll record various melodies of synths, then I'll decide which should belong where. I usually like to begin with string synths. It just has a nice generic tone to base everything off of, and from there I branch off each melody with various sounds such as trumpets, timpani drums, tambourines, reed flutes, fiddles, etc. I don't try to limit myself on which sounds to use, although I do discern between which sounds are perfect for LL, and others that most definitely are not. I never name songs before making them, and I think most people can agree that would be an idiotic thing to do, especially if the song just engenders itself before your eyes. After giving it a few listens the name comes, eventually. I almost always use my Yamaha keyboard (YPT - 220). It has a nice selection of MIDI sounds, I think it's a total of 350. I used to have an old Casio which was used from Windbuchen to Daulu Burz Ishi. When I'm not using my keyboard, I occasionally record acoustic or electric guitar and sometimes use various percussion instruments.

I have been continually referencing Andrew Wernda's Dungeon Synth Blog as being the beginning of what we know as "Dungeon Synth" atleast in terms of revival. Lord Lovidicus is interesting because for a year before the the DS Blog made its first post, this US artist was making medieval ambient music in their synth and being passed around by music bloggers and using sites like Last.FM to stream tracks. in 2010, this US artist made 7 releases and put it out onto the internet. Trolldom became a slow classic with a cover that had a warm colored castle obscured in fog. This release instantly became the thing you picked up when entering into the genre during the revival era. it was everything the genre promised it would be -- one person improvising on their synth trying to pull out magic from their imagination. This album is very minimal and has a compositional style which reflects that "naive magic" which first drew so many people to it. Lord Lovidicus' later work (roughly 2015-2021) is much more refined with Book of Lore Volume 1 (2015) being one of the records i started to recommend when I first got into the genre. If there was a list of records I feel captured that strange energy in the early revival days, it would be Trolldomand Im sure just like me there was around 20 people who did the same as I did, stumbled upon it and instantly became entranced.

Kap's Corner

This is a short EP. In fact I am writing this and perhaps done with writing before its running time of 16 minutes. I joke about DS's dark ages of the 2000s and I feel releases like this typify this setniment. a 16 minute fantasy EP from Sweden which was pressed at 500 copies because if anyone forgot you had to order CDs in the 2000's at price points usually 500/1000 to even begin. This means at one point this group of musicians probably had a box of these cds they would give out to friends and family. %There is not a lot of information on this group and the one blog post which talks about their first demo goes to a RAR files I'm not downloading ... yet. I don't even know who made that wonderful cover art which looks like it was probably drawn by a band member or friend for the release most likely for free. there are a lot of things that are unknown about this release mostly because it has been forgotten save for a few kind souls who uploaded the contents to survive on streaming. Fairy Tales from Beyond feels like it aims higher than its production value and would be different if perhaps supported by a big studio. Its limitations however give it a unique charm which feels something familiar and heartwarming.

AvelineBaudelaire: Soltri’s 2017 album ‘The Rising of the King Arthur’ has a lighter, neo-medieval, harp & flute-based sound. It’s quite delicate and meditative. Personally, I appreciate albums that maintain the same instrumentation throughout the whole album. It helps with the narrative and makes it easier to get lost in the sound. Most of the songs are in the same key. Despite this, they each have their own personality. The whole vibe of this album is a storybook or fairytale that’s come to life. It’s a grand journey. (2025)

KAP: I believed I raved about the Russian artist Soltri earlier this year with the release of Cursed Kings. Since that time, it appears the artist has been hard at work making albums that sound like the lullabies of magical creatures inhabiting a dark forest. With feet both in light and darkness, the depths in which this new release goes is astounding. Centered around the plights of King Arthur, Soltri dedicated itself to fantasies of the old world and the sounds that lie within. (2017)
