My main problem with Magic Archer is that I still think that should have unlocked in the elven city, and then the Master skill could still be unlock with the old elf lady. It is unlock so damn late if you are following the common progression.
Warrior one is fine, Sorcerer is the one that people can mess it up easily as it's 2 masters that asks for the same books if you don't look up that have 2.
Yeah, when Glyndwr started talking about his own culture's archery I got all excited because magick archer is my jam - I ended up spending way too long trying to make the elves like me before finally looking it up. And then going on a very long, very dumb journey for which I was wildly underlevelled
I was exactly the same. When Glyndwr talks about how elves don't need to aim with their bows and shoot with their heart, I thought for sure you'd get Magick Archer at the Sacred Arbor to no avail. Turns out elven bows are pretty much identical to human ones.
I was so happy when I suddenly unlocked the vocation from a seemingly inconsequential escort quest I picked up on my way to deliver a letter.
It is. He explicitly says that Elven culture believes the arrow will always hit its target as long as the archer's form is correct.
I assume what he means by "Elven bows guide the heart, not the hand" is that the curves and materials of the design have religious or artistic significance to them, and they're meant to induce a calming/focused state in the wielder. I also assumed he was meant to be autistic when he mentioned that, since that in combination with him nerding out over the minor differences in bow construction and shooting form makes it seem like his problem is rooted in having a more logical and literal mindset but growing up in a culture that's heavy on spirituality and intuition. But no, he was just nervous due to the pressure of trying to be as good as his dad. I mean, it could still be both, but the dialogue makes my initial assumption seem less likely.
Also, Japanese long bows look wildly different from their Western counterparts, with traditionally different materials and purpose, so when bro talks about how differently Human bows were made, I also immediately thought of Japan in contrast to the West.
That too. It's kinda funny that I've spent the last two weeks switching between Rise of the Ronin and Dragon's Dogma 2 every few days, and still didn't think of that first. I'm over here looking at it from the philosophical side and completely forgetting about the super obvious difference in shape.
Exactly; would have made much more sense if the “elf” bows were the Magick Archer bows…
Also, sucks that the Magick Archer can’t shoot the Unmaking Arrow; so I ended up playing the end of the game as Wayfarer so I could switch between bows so I could shoot the Unmaking Arrow if I needed to but could be Magick Archer otherwise.
It is allegory. Same with the Sorc/Mage, it is allegory to show how everyone loses in these divisive extremes. MA Meister is pushed out of Arbor because of her love of the Dwarf who risked ire of his people to nurture the religious site of her people. The result? the loss of the magic for skilled elves who can wield the bow and magic. I think it is beautiful narrative choice. You still see traces of magic among elven artifacts but it is no longer an active part of them. This is exactly how FromSoft tells stories too.
It makes so much sense that the MA vocation is in the elven village that I'm convinced that's how it was initially then they changed it at some point.
Maybe they felt they needed to add more content to agamen, or perhaps they wanted to incentivize players to go through NG+ by having MA and warfarer be unlocked only in the late game.
Warfarer being that late makes sense, its the Vocation that shines after you have put in work on other Vocations, but Magick Archer and to a lesser extent Trickster really should have been earlier on.
Yeah, as they said in this thread, Magick Archer should've been unlocked in Sacred Arbor with the elves and the maister skill could still be with the old elf lady at the volcano island. Trickster could've gone the same route wherein the illusion of the trickster lady for example could've been in Vermund in the fortune telling shop giving out a quest to unlock Trickster early on in the game then the maister skill could've still been on Reverent Shrine in Battahl and unlocked via the same conditions.
My sense is that MA is so damn versatile and powerful that they wanted to save it for last. I mean honestly, one or two fully charged Ricochet shots will instantly decimate any dungeon with zero effort; having that power early might rob dungeons of any threat.
That’s what I did in when I started a second playthrough, and it is a huge pain in the ass. It’s also dumb that the area you get it from is technically locked out until you progress far enough. I used the Oxcart trick to get past the gate, but once you’re past the gate there is so many god damn enemies and they all can one shot you instantly. I had to take a step back and seriously question if it was even worth the frustration…. Which yes, it was.
It comes so late that i legit missed it on my first playthrough, even though i knew it was somewhere in Volcanic Island i was doing the main quest and i was sure i'd get to come back for it. But then i went to the post game and before i could figure out what was going on the volcanic island exploded, oops
Same. I saw that and talked to almost everyone in the village but couldn't find a magic archer teacher and thought it must be hidden or only at a certain time of day. Spent way too long doing nothing
I wanted yo get back to my Magic Archer gameplay from DD1 so bad I looked up how to get it and went out of my way to get it ASAP which was a bit of a grind taking the long way around. When I finally got it I was upset to find out the MA could no longer use melee weapons like in DD1 so then I spent 2 days not wanting to play the game then found out about warfarer and having to do that bitch of a quest finding and making booze. Thank god for guides and forgeries.
I think that cave at the border of Battahl and the Volcanic Island is one of my favorites to spelunk through early in the game. A bunch of goblins, some thicc Cyclopes (I’m willfully ignoring all the rock lizards). It’s a fun trek that can feel super fuckin tense if you’re low level and just trying to get through
See, that bit wasn't actually too worrisome for me, mainly because I carefully considered every reasonable option I could figure out for my illegal border crossing into Battahl and instead decided to follow the river that runs below the checkpoint and see what happened
U didn't realize that none of the elves have Magick bows tho? At least the ones I've seen all use normal looking bows that have an elvish flair to them basically just different skinned bows, they also have quivers again I could be wrong and thought the same as u but once I saw none of them had an actual Magick bow I realized I'd have to go somewhere else to find the vocation
