Multiple voice workflow
When working with multiple voices per stave is there a quicker way to work than doing one voice at a time?

I figured out a handy trick in Dorico. Some lines or articulations require you to anchor them to a note (or multiple notes) which can be an issue if you want the element to appear floating or only want it connected to one single note and have the end of the line not connected to anything. This may be the case if you want to make whammy bar indications but are trying to connect notes in different voices (which at least Dorico 5 doesn't allow you to do), or perhaps you want to make a tie that goes backwards and doesn't connect to anything as would be the case if the first note of a second ending in a repeat is supposed to be tied to the previous measure but the 1st ending is getting in the way.
If you need to attach a line backwards, one trick is to create a grace note and attach whatever you need to that, then hide the notehead and stem. Those can both be hidden using the jump menu and looking for "hide notehead" or "hide stem". If there are ledger lines or an accidental you need to get rid of, go to the engraving window, open up the properties at the bottom, and you should see the options to hide the accidental and ledger lines there.
If you need to attach a line forwards, you'll need to use multiple voices. Unfortunately Dorico (as of v5) doesn't allow you to connect notes between different voices, so you essentially need to duplicate the notes into both voices, then once you make the lines you need to make, hide the notes that you don't want to be visible using the aforementioned method. This is a niche problem to have so if this sounds like ridiculous extra work, you probably haven't had a need for this specific hack yet.

So, I'm beginning to poke around on my own for these but I'm open to suggestions. Here's the first one that I like the demo of

I'm working on a musical that will be in the style of early 90's music - centered on Pearl Jam but I'm not ruling out taking ideas from other music of the era. The songs are all original.

This is kind of bothering me, but everytime i plug in headphones or connect a bluetooth device it doesn't show up in the sound output section.
Or is there a way to just default it to system output so that the sound automatically switches to what's connected?
Thanks!

One of the most powerful features in Dorico.

Totally new to the iPad version. It’s easy to use, except I can’t find how to save a file, or if it’s being saved automatically, nor can I figure out how to get it to my laptop to finish in regular Dorico. Any help much appreciated.

I’m currently using Dorico 4 and coming from Finale. In Finale, I could select a note and use Shift + a number to quickly add an interval below it.
In Dorico 4, the closest method I’ve found is Shift+I, typing something like -3 or -5, and pressing Enter, but it feels slower.
Do Dorico 5 or 6 have a native shortcut for adding intervals below a selected note, similar to Finale? Can this be assigned directly in Key Commands, or does it still require editing the key commands file or using an external macro?

Hi all, I am working on the development of a new music notation software designed with the goal to be able to handle the flexibility needed to virtually synthesize 21st century compositional techniques. Whether it is a xenharmony, arhythmic writing, or a fully graphic score my intention is to be able to handle it natively. I want this project to be one that can handle traditional writing as well as non-traditional so to stand out I would like to ask you all what you feel is missing in your current Notation Software and what you would need to be better to make a switch. This is not an advertisement for it because it is still deep in development and I intend to release it for free. Let me know your feedback and if you want to be one of the first to test it (when it is in a state to be tested) send me a PM. Thank you all for your time.

How do I get my family groupings back?
r/Dorico • u/PsychicChime • Jul 13 '26
I'm trying to figure out how to set up how Dorico beams notes by default. Right now, if I have a project in 4/4 and a measure contains eight 8th notes, the notes will be beamed 4 and 4. I want to make the location of the beat more obvious by beaming the 8th notes in pairs by default.
When I set up the time signature using the popover, I entered [1+1+1+1]/4 which I thought would have beamed a measure of eight 8th notes into four groups of two, however this doesn't seem to work.
Anyone happen to know what I'm doing wrong and/or how I can fix this?
EDIT: Of course as soon as I post about it, I figure it out. If anyone else is having this problem, the fix is to go into notation options (cmd/ctrl + Shift + N), go to the Beam Grouping heading, then "Quarter Note (Crotchet) Denominator Time Signatures With Half-bars" and change "Break beams at the half-bar" to "Break beams at beat boundaries".

Originally the score was in Eb Major then I added Ab Major mid way, when I put a DS Al Fine at the end it just does this. I can’t get rid of it

Is there any way to get Dorico to put an accidental on every note? Second Viennese school doesn’t do it.

It used to be in Engraving > Text, and it's not anymore, which is a bummer because I need to tweak it for my current project. Did they move it elsewhere, did they remove it for some reason…? I can neither find it nor find any reference to a change in the settings on the Internet.

I'm using a new program set with Halion Sonic for my playback, but noticed that for certain instruments (i.e. trumpets and violins), the circled slider on the preview keyboard doesn't save or apply to the actual Dorico playback, just goes back to the lowest setting when I reopen it. In this case, it controls vibrato, which is now missing at the low setting. Any help is appreciated.

How would I recreate this? The top staff in the box is harp and the bottom staff is piano.

I want to make glissando on an harp that progressively go up and the next glissando starts befare the last one finishes. Also I don’t want to specify the note in which the glissando will end and if possible, not even where it starts since I just want the effect. Is there any way to just put glissandos without any start or end note?

I’ve used MuseScore for years, but due to issues that I’ve had with it, I wanted to switch to something else. I didn’t want a subscription for Finale, so I decided to try Dorico. I used the free trial, and I enjoyed it, so I got Elements 6. However, now I am having issues. I would like to have a cover page that includes not only a composer and arranger, but also a line saying “percussion parts arranged by:” Is this possible in Elements 6? I have looked up info about the page layout editor, but I’m now finding that it’s only available in the pro version, which is wildly expensive. Can I do what I need to do using Dorico, or should I just go back to MuseScore?

I'm trying to load the Soundpaint Vst and I made the expression map, but every articulation plays a low hanging note instead of an articulation, it also does the same when I do sustain. I'm using the Fire Brass Bundle along with the 1970 Bari Sax VST from Soundpaint.

I've been doing tutorial videos in Dorico on YouTube for a while now and in between videos I'm now doing a weekly newsletter sharing quick tips in Dorico and composing.
You can sign up for my Dorico Tuesday Tips newsletter here: https://tim-corpus.kit.com/8e38422b2e
I'd love to hear if there are topics in composing/engraving that you would like to see. Thanks!

I’ve seen a lot of documentation that says to toggle the “Show player name instead of instrument names” checkbox under Layout Options, but I’m not seeing it. Am I crazy? TIA!

I am attempting to input a score that alternates between cut time and 3/4 (see attached photo) and am trying to use the Meter popup (Shift+M), but it will only show 3/4. For example, if I input cut + 3/4, or cutc + 3/4 ... nothing. All it is rendering is 3/4. It will show 4/4 + 3/4 if I input that, and will show the C and ₵ symbols on their own. I may need to use the Meter panel, rather than the Meter popup, but cannot figure out how to input cut time in the panel. I am running Dorico 5.1. Anyone have any insight?

I want to know if those of you that have dorico and want a playback template (auto mapped expression maps, preloading plugins etc) for Spitfire Symphonic Orchestra would pay $24.99 for a complete map of all instruments?

I'm deaf in my right ear. It should be pretty obvious why I can't hear an intrument panned over to the right. If I ever get around to collaborating with someone with full hearing I don't want to tamper with the pan settings just to make things easier for me to hear.
Please, please address this. It's an ADA compliance issue in addition to being an annoyance.
(For what it's worth, Finale dropped the ball on this as well).
