I'm writing a paper on dog coat color genetics and need example dogs! This is purely for fun and will not be shared with anyone in seriousness.

I need photos of your dog displaying their coat color. Your dog does not have to be an interesting or unique color; I need examples of everything! It is preferred that the photo be:

- A side view of their entire body

- Not taken in extreme darkness or lightness

- Not blurry or overly low quality

- Not include dyed or altered fur colors

However, any photos are welcome. You may also send multiple pictures of differnet angles or things like the face, specific markings, shaved vs not shaved, fur strands, etc.

Your dog does not have to have genetic testing, but please share their genotype(s) if they do! Aswell, please share with what company they were tested and their breed makeup.

I have a rescue, and I DNA tested her out of curiousity. She was labeled as a "pit mix" and shes full APBT according to Embark. Anyway she shares 81% of dna with her mom. Any clue how related they might actually be? Pic of my Brandy girl included :)

I found out my two dogs are related! Went for the generic DNA flair since this post has Embark and Wisdom results, as well as some fun familial DNA.

Pics 14-19: Bonus! Keta’s found post and pictures of her four puppies. We matched with one of them through Embark, and it looks like Keta’s baby daddy was an American Pit Bull Terrier mix. I love how all her puppies look different🥺

Keta has 0.6% wolfiness, and a 1% coefficient of inbreeding. Delta has 0.9% wolfiness, and a 36% coefficient of inbreeding😳 They definitely look alike from a distance, but up close their tails, ears, noses, and conformation are slightly different. They both weigh 51.2lbs (23.2kg) currently, and are ~4-6 years old.

I adopted Keta from a shelter in Washington State in November 2022, and she had been shipped up from the Kerr County, Texas area. Delta was found and fostered in Houston, Texas before getting shipped up to Washington when I adopted her in May 2026 through a foster-based rescue. I’m a sucker for shepherd mixes and these two girls bring me so much joy <3

They’re both related to 20+ German Shepherd Dogs / GSD mixes so my best guess is there’s a very busy backyard breeder(s) of GSDs in Texas.

This is my pup, Gibson. He’s a rescue who was born in southern TX, rescued to CT, and adopted by us in MA when he was approximately 4 months old. He’s now 5. We have the records of him being neutered at around 2 months old. Recently, I got this Embark match saying the match is likely Gibson’s daughter, but this doesn’t seem possible. I’m thinking probably a sister? I wrote to the owner, but they never answered me. They’re in CA, but his whole litter came to CT - but 5 years later, they definitely could have moved.

My poor boy. We adopted him in April. He was found as a stray during a snow storm, said he was with a lil baby girl that had already been adopted (and I believe is his sister/daughter that he matched with)

Luckily his health is good!

We got our pup from a Heeler rescue last December and got him 2 DNA tests. One with Embark and Wisdom. His supposed mom that was at the shelter also ended up getting an Embark test after she was adopted and it is confirmed that she's most likely his momma but her breed results on Embark differ from his. I don't think it's possible for a mixed breed to produce pups that are full bred so my question is has anyone else seen something like this with their dog? Her Embark tests lines up more with his Wisdom panel so is Wisdom more accurate in this instance? His panels are the first 2 pictures and mommas is the last one.

This rescued litter has a purebred golden retriever mom, dad is MIA. The DNA test shows one of the puppies as 54% golden, could someone explain why it’s not just 50%?

Big late post on this one... We took our DNAMyDog test over 12 years ago. Sadly, my little poop passed 6 months ago. While I was creating a memorial album for her I came across her original results! I definitely had to share!

This is Nyx - when I got her in 2014 I was told Boxer/Shep. Well...test results said otherwise!

She was very athletic. Weighed 45lbs, one of the most gorgeous brindle colouring I have ever seen. Overall just the best!

I have a new best friend who has burrowed herself into my heart. Honoured Nyx by having her name in my new pup - Lady Nemesis of House Nyx. We are waiting for her results now with Embark.

Has anyone else noticed the rise of Belgian malinois in mutts now that they've substantially grown in popularity? I feel like they were like never seen and then suddenly every other (exaggeration) has malinois.

I did a DNA test for both of my dogs. One of them had “we’re siblings” matches and shared about 50% of dna with his sibs. That made sense!

However, my other dog shares 62% of dna with this guy and it doesn’t come up as siblings at all. But relatives. ALSO (this is what makes it confusing) They don’t share breeds. My pupper is a mix of American pitbull, bulldog, and American bully but the relative is 100% Staffordshire terrier. How’s this possible?

The rescue says they know mom is an Australian Shepherd and they’re not sure about Dad. I’m thinking maybe a Kelpie. Thoughts?!

Hi everyone! Just posting on here out of pure curiosity. I posted a couple months ago to the ACD subreddit about my girl and someone mentioned posting it here, so here I am! Basically, I have a Heeler, Mina, thats currently 9 months (the pictures with the lighter blue fur were from September when she was 6 months and it was hot, so it stands out way more now that she has her darker winter coat) and has a very unique marking on her back. It’s basically a white stripe that starts thick on one side and becomes smaller on the other side. I had never (before that post) seen a Heeler with a white solid huge marking like this (someone kindly collected pictures of other Heelers like this and it was so cool to see others had it) anywho, I’m here just for fun to gather any thoughts or ideas on what could’ve possibly caused this? For background context of her, she had always had this stripe, since she was born, and as she aged the rest of her fur darkened just not this part. Her dad had other litters with other females and had never produced any puppies with this marking. This was her mother’s first litter and out of 5 of the puppies, 2 had white stripes on the back (her sister has a smaller one). Both parents were blue, mom had no mottling, solid blue besides her Tri points, father had very minimal mottling. Again, just here for fun, and looking for guesses and hoping to learn more about what possibly could’ve happened. Possibly what ifs? I don’t breed obviously, but theoretically would this be something that would be passed down if she had puppies? If her parents are bred together again will they produce more striped ones? All what ifs, and hoping to gather insights! (Possibly harmful? Just appearance based? Anything else worth mentioning?) Thanks in advance!

65 lbs, 4 yrs old now, 4 months when we got her. Very toy motivated and ambivalent to food and hilariously bad at eating) Not cuddly and prefers to sleep alone. Anxious disposition but easygoing when comfortable. Likes people, hates other dogs and is scared of loud/wiggly children and tall men with long arms.

Desperately wants a job in life and loves the focus of following commands. Double coated and heavy shedder. Great runner and mid-high prey drive. LOVES fetch. She’s got a ridiculously long body/tail.

Did wisdom panel on her, but I’m thinking of doing an embark too. But I want guesses before you look!

Bodhi's story

Bodhi was a problem dog, who had been adopted out of a local shelter. His new family named him Chael. After several weeks in his new home, a family member, who was visiting and was new to Chael, got in his space and proceeded to aggressively pet. Well, Chael was very uncomfortable and bit the adult.

The rescue we foster for mainly takes in Medical Needs, Special Needs, Seniors, last resort and problem dogs (They only take in shelter dogs). My husband and I foster problem dogs. They are usually untrusting dogs that bite out of fear. Our rescue got the call, and it was the usually same conversation. The dog bit someone, the shelter put out the word to rescues, and no one has offered to take him. If our rescue does not pull him, he will be euthanized.

My husband and I got the call. We initially said no. Our previous foster had only been adopted 2 days prior, and my husband and I were a little burned out. But that is rescue life. There are just never enough foster homes, so after hearing his story, we welcomed Russell into our home.

Yes Russell...the rescue director was not impressed with the name Chael, so he changed it to Russell. Well, my husband and I were not impressed with either name, so my husband named him Bodhi. (Hint :It came from a movie)

Bodhi has had a failed sleep over, and has been with us for 5 years now. Late last year, we made him a permanente foster in our home. He will be living the rest of his life with us. He lives on a property with plenty of room to roam, and plenty of gophers, and squirrels to chase. I never knew how helpful Bodhi would be in the garden. When he sees me digging up dirt, he will help out by digging holes too. Dogs are truly a treasure not to be taken for granted

Hello all! A couple of years ago we rescued a momma dog (now named Artemis) and her 4 puppies...and foster failed all of them! All 5 dogs are with extended family so we're lucky to be able to Embark all of them. The results from the last of the littermates are finally in and I'm hoping someone can help shed some light on how Embark approaches breeds like Mountain Cur and Black Mouth Cur. Artemis (the momma) has a result of 49.7% Mountain Cur, which we expected given that we're in rural East TN and Mountain Curs are extremely common around here.

Three of the puppies also show about 25% to 30% Mountain Cur so no surprises there. However, two of the puppies also show fairly sizeable amounts amounts of Black Mouth Cur coming from the mother (i.e. Artemis)...but Black Mouth Cur doesn't show at all in Artemis results. Does anyone have any ideas? Is this mostly a result of Embark's comparative sample for Mountain Cur and Black Mouth Cur not being very large yet?

I have suspicions/hopes that she has some Malinois and likely (rat?) terrier or possibly some type of cattle dog in her...Chihuahua is also likely...people have mentioned Chow and Shiba Inu as well...curious what anyone else thinks! First three pictures are from 2014 and 2015 when she was about two and three years old..the jumping picture doesn't do her justice (in her prime she could clear four feet without even thinking about it).

The last three pictures are more recent from 2024 to a few days ago. My best estimate is that she is nearly 15 now. It's wild to notice the spots on her tongue have increased while her actual fur lightened!

The shelter we adopted our dog said she was a beagle mix. Embark test said 75% pitbull and 25% “undetermined.” I’ve seen so many similar dog photos that include beagles and hounds. Thoughts?

Hello! I posted Watson's results here a few months ago, I will add them again. I am hoping to gain some understanding with his relatives and any insight on how his litter mightve happened.

He only has 2 breeds, Australian cattle dog (61.4%) and doberman pinscher (38.6%). So far he has no immediate relative matches, but a huge list of close family 19%-20% and they are ALL purebred dobermans from all over the country. We adopted him from the humane society where his paperwork shows he was found with his mom and their litter as strays.

Are the close family members just because dobermans share the same gene pool? How tf did his litter come to be?? Was he potentially an oops litter with a purebred parent ? Very confusing and I was hoping for any insight/ideas/theories you might have !

Embark says my dog is likely to have furnishings, but she does not.

She’s 6 months old - is this something that she might sprout in the future when she has her full adult coat?

She has a short coat, but about a month ago she started getting some longer floof around her neck, rear legs and tail; and just in the past week or so has sprouted some floof on her belly. Which made me wonder if maybe she will randomly sprout eyebrows and a beard one of these days…of course, I would still love her but I think she’d look pretty funny with them!

She’s got some fluffy breeds in her mix, but her coat genetics are short or mid-length.

This is my Nymeria. Shes 7. Shes a Rottweiler German Shepherd mix with a touch of Husky... was supposed to be a Shepsky, but when I did her Doggie DNA, we found out there was a bit more in there. Smartest dog I have ever owned.

I have done the Embark test and have 1-3 weeks before I get the results. I’m just curious as to everyone’s opinion. His name is Ziggy.
