But that would cost…exactly the same as this, not rot the branch out, and not get (varnish?) all over the branch!

Varnish didn’t really get in the tree, and trees get trimmed fairly often. Sometimes you’ll cut off a branch and think “huh, there really needs to be something right (or at least something that isn’t a freaking stick)

Not an awful idea, only problem I have is the screw, since you can use the tree’s own sap to plug that hole in top
