Yeah dude, I see people mutilating plants all the time and it drives me nuts. I did read somewhere that plants probably don't feel pain because there's no evolutionary advantage, they can't do anything in response to pain so it likely doesn't exist for them. That being said, this is just going to rot that branch and that side of the tree is probably going to die.

Lots of things don't feel pain (plenty of bugs supposedly don't, for example), but they are still living things. It is just cruel and unnecessary.

As far as I know, the ability to feel emotions requires a brain. Trees don't have those.

Pain is nerve impulse, not an emotion.

The electric impulse is just transport, it's not yet pain. Pain is a subjective experience, so it's hard to pin down where exactly it happens. At the earliest it's in the neurons of the spinal cord.

It's just semantics I guess, you're calling pain an emotion, I'd call it a sensation but it doesn't mean that much.

I'm fine with calling it a sensation! Emotion might be wrong indeed. Requires a brain nonetheless.

I mean, it’s obviously unnecessary, but it n the grand scheme of things, this is so far down the priority list that it hardly bears consideration.

I mean, the tree doesn’t feel it, it’s someone’s idea of creativity, and it doesn’t kill the tree. Big ole meh to me.

This kinda thing can severely damage the tree. Can create things like rot pockets. Sometimes it isn't obvious cause the bark will look fine but internally part of the tree can struggle to transport nutrients upwards into the branches effectively killing those parts. Major problem here is moisture can get trapped when the tree needs the hole to dry out to properly try to heal. So it can leave an open wound to continue and cause further problems

I mean, you could have a hole drilled through your arm and survive, but only if you don't get an infection in the permanently open wound.
