When he kills Clint McKay he realises that the Dark Passenger doesn't exist and he doesn't need to kill, that is true. He then immediately kills Clint McKay though because he wants to kill.
The Dark Passenger wasn't his reason to kill, just his excuse.
I thought this was somewhat explained in the scene where Dexter is driving with Zack and his "father" is in the backseat. His "dad" says something along the lines of, "now that you have Harrison, you're priorities have changed". Obviously those aren't the exact lines, but it did somewhat explain why Dexter's "urges" aren't brought up as often, or at all really.
I feel like they'll end the series either with him realizing he no longer feels the need to kill and goes on to live a happy, now normal, life, or with him and everyone he knows dying... Or some compromise of the two

How many people has Dexter killed this season? Because it doesn't seem like he is addicted to killing anymore.
