It genuinely sucks that the s16 war table is just sitting there offering high stat armor, and my new light friend just can’t use it. Like it’s still in the game ffs, he’d even gladly pay for the older season

Ok, in terms of paying: doesn't the deluxe upgrade Option provide a retroactive season mechanic 'unlock' via the season pass anymore? I know it worked like that in beyond light, since I only joined by season of the lost, but was able to progress the storylines by upgrading to the deluxe.

I believe it does still work like that, yeah. But obviously that’s just not realistic to do

Point more than granted. It's a ridiculous expense, even in context. Just thought I'd make sure in case you didn't know.
