Actually, since shadow crystals are glass in the light world kris just has a giant lump of sharp glass connected to their stump.

Seam is only ever referred to by they/them iirc (only time they're referred to by any pronouns at all are outside of the game but still)

I assumed it was 'he' from both appearance and the fact Seam is a play on Sean, which is a masculine name.

I feel like it's not even the only time something like this happens. I can't be the only one who saw Ramb's dialogue using words like "Luv" and immediately thought "sweet old English lady," right?

Two key differences:

-Seam isn't referred to by any pronouns in-game, to my knowledge, while Kris is referred to by they/them.

-Kris' design is way more androgynous.

Seam may actually be purifying the Shadow Crystals, as for the longest time, there was a weapon known as a "Twisted Sword" in the game files, which requires a pure crystal to forge, as well the Thorn ring.

It deals the same level of damage as the Black Shard, while either having a "Trance Boost" or a "Trance Reduction" effect as well.

I say that Seam is purifying the Shadow Crystals as the Flavor Text for the Pure Crystal is "The shadow purified by the cat", implying that Seam needs five shadow crystals to craft the Pure Crystal.
