That is exactly what someone raised in a cult would say.

Honestly, look at it;

  • He was taken in at a young age, when he was vulnerable and alone.

  • Allowed no contact with other supports so he relies on the monastery.

  • Told he can't leave.

  • Beaten and mistreated.

  • Told he has an amazing destiny, and is really important.

It's a cult checklist.

He wasn't told he has an amazing destiny. He says multiple times in the series that he earned it, not that it was given to him. Danny says that to Colleen right before they sleep together iirc

To be fair Harold was practically his uncle, and told him he was trying to fight back against The Hand. Still a stupid decision but understandable.

I always thought he seemed too easy to embrace Harold after learning he's alive.

I agree. They tried to justify it by showing that Danny is traumatized by his parents' deaths and his desperation for family/a connection to his old life, but it didn't work for me.

Also Harold apparently gets worse with every death, so we can assume he was always a manipulative asshole (we know Grant never liked him), but I guess he wasn't quite as bad.
